Why would you even get a puppy?

edited November 2010 in Vent
I'm keeping this vent short and simple. I was so mad at school today. About a week ago this snobby girl who I don't like very much told her friends she got a puppy. I think she said it was a black lab. Well, this morning her eyes looked all puffy and she said "My parents took my dog back." When asked why she replied "It was peeing all over the house." Me and a few others said "That's what puppies do. You have to housetrain it." Her only reply was "Exactly! And they took it back!"

A dog isn't a toy you can take back if you don't like it. They obviosuly think after 1 week of potty training a dog will be magically trained. They probably care more about their floors then their pet.

 • I see your point, but I don't agree that dogs can't just be "taken back" if you don't like them. If a dog(or any animal) is not working for a family or an individual, then I would much rather it find a new home that can give it the love and time it needs, instead of telling a family it's a lifetime commitment. Clearly this dog, and maybe all dogs in general, didn't work for this family. Now they know, and hopefully they learn from it. That's what is important.

Now, if they go out a week later, and get another puppy that does the same thing(it's what puppies do), then I'd be a little ticked off, because they clearly aren't learning from their mistakes.

I agree. We had a Siamese cat that didn't work for us after a couple of years. She just DIDN'T like us anymore. She was cranky, she peed ALL over the house, every corner, chewed up stuff, etc. We put up with it for two years and kept trying new things to keep her happy, but nothing did. We finally took her to the local animal shelter, and I don't know for sure, but I think she found a home. She was better off with a quiet, small family that would devote more time to her, without any other cats.
 • I agree, but I thought the reason was a little odd. It's not like it was aggressive or too energetic or something, it was just doing what puppies do. If it had been a while I could understand, but it was literally only about a week. I suppose it's better that they don't have it, it still makes me mad though. :x
I'm not trying to invalidate your anger, but I want to propose you try looking at it from another angle to help you understand why they made made such a fast decision. Everyone has their limits. Clearly these people knew what they were willing to deal with, and the puppy crossed those limits. It's extreme, but let's use an aggressive dog as an example. Say someone(maybe you) adopted a dog that became aggressive when you brought it home, and posed a serious risk to your family. Most people don't want to, don't know how to, or can't afford to train and treat an aggressive dog, so it goes back to wherever it came from within a week and the person get's "You made the right choice. It was too dangerous." Typically no one says "You should have tried harder/longer" when it involves something like that, and that is because the majority of people don't like aggressive dogs. Now a house training problem seems like no big deal to you, but to someone with little experience on house training, and who has a house they've worked very hard to get, allowing a puppy to just destroy it is out of the question, and so the puppy goes back to wherever it came from and the person get's "You should have tried harder/longer." Rarely does anyone say "You did the right thing. That puppy was a danger to all you've work for." It all comes down to an individuals limits.

I think worrying about your property(their home) is a very valid reason, one that a lot of people forget to think about before getting a puppy. Puppies are destructive, and some people just have too much invested in their homes to go and have an animal mess it up. My carpets are destroyed from one of our dogs that had bladder problem. We bought our own carpet cleaner for hundreds of dollars, but it never got the pee stains completely out, and it would have cost us hundreds to have a professional service come out and clean the carpet each time an accident happened. We are going to have to have it all pulled up and replaced, which will cost thousands. We have carpet and slate, but wood floors can be a lot more expensive to take care of replace, and a lot more work to replace. Puppies can scratch them up, and stain the wood from peeing on it. Pee stains on wood floors actually look REALLY bad.

Try to also feel comfort in the fact that puppies typically have a much larger chance of getting adopted than adult dog, so it's better that they took it back now, instead of in a year when it would be harder to find a home for the dog.

 • Again, I agree. I was not saying that I was upset they got rid of the puppy, I'm sure it will be better off for everyone that way. I'm saying that I'm mad they got the puppy in the first place, without realizing they would need to housetrain it and it wouldn't be easy. I would have more sympathy if they had the puppy for longer, but it was only a little while until they got rid of it. Again, I don't know the whole situation, but what I do know annoys me. Anyways, I understand what you mean, but that's just my opinion.

Yeah, they probably shouldn't have gotten the puppy in the first place, but unfortunately TV and movies make owning a puppy look a lot different than it really is, and unknowing owners take those fantasies as truths, so they don't do their own research. We all have to hope that's now something they know to do in the future, if they ever do consider another pet. I know that for me there are very few scenarios in which I would pick a puppy over an adult due to what it takes to raise a puppy.

As for the amount of time, that is strictly an opinion. 1 week, or 1 year; It just doesn't matter to me as long they learn from it. You clearly have a slightly have a slightly different opinion, and I respect that.
