• I am not sure why you're asking this considering a settlement statement is for the adult to handle. From what I am going to guess, a settlement statement is just a declaration of what you want, aka what you want 'settled' or decided. I would assume that it includes property, money, assets, alamony, children, etc. I beleive then there is a meeting where these items are negotiated on and come to some agreement. Sometimes the parties are in agreement off the bat and other times they argue and neither want to settle (this draws out the whole process). If someone you know is going through a divorce, they should really be talking to a lawyer. They are the ones with all the information and have the ability to protect you and your rights. If it's your parents, I would let them handle it. Divorces are hard and all you can do is show your support.

 • A settlement statement is a listing of all assets and debts and how the parties involved agree to "settle" them. ie, A will keep the car and make the loan payment, insurance, etc. B will keep all furnishings in the house. House will be sold and after debt is paid, any proceeds split 50/50, etc However it's agreed to settle. My settlement statement included credit card debts, horses, house, vehicles, bank accounts and personal possessions (his mother's wedding ring).

There are a number of reasons one might need their settlement statement during a divorce. Aside from child custody, it's probably the most important document, especially if there are a lot of assets and debts from the marriage. In my divorce, the judge wanted to see it to make sure everything had been decided and that nothing had been left out that he might have to deal with later and to make sure my ex and I understood what it was saying. It may be needed if one party isn't abiding by the statement or if one party is accusing another of not abiding by it.

 • Thanks Guys (: And Tarn, its not that I dont want them to handle it, its I dont know for sure. Alot of things have been pointing toward divorce, so I did some snooping, and they just had a meeting with a lawyer about a settlement statment... is there any other reason youd need you settlement statment?
 • Sure, settlement statements can be part of an insurance settlement, IRS may come after you for funds received from a settlement, You may reach a settlement with someone before you get sued or you sue them. Why not just ask?
