Running, in general.

Have I mentioned how much I hate running? I hate running. I hate it I hate it I HATE IT.

Because:
I'm carrying around extra weight. Am I going to lie to make myself feel better? No. Do I think I look fine the way I am? No. I -know- I need to improve, because, in the end, it leads to a better life. Plus, I definitely don't want the granny's apron when I'm like 55. D;
-I run funny. I'm one of those people where, although I have an arch in my foot, I run flat-footed and my foot rolls inwards toward the other foot. Does this piss me off to no end? Yeah, because I kick my ankles when I pick my feet up, and scrape the opposite ankle. ): Therefore, I run in Brooks Adrenaline shoes, which are thicker and stiffer, made for people that have arches, but roll in when they run.
-Because of the way I run, I have knee issues. Which, is normal for a beginner. But, I'm talking about knee issues where I just about collapse because it hurts so bad, because I guess my knees aren't used to absorbing the shock of running.
-North Carolina terrain and weather is hell. Period. This isn't Columbus, OH, where it was 67 and sunny with NO humidity all weekend I was there. Columbus is flat. Sometimes, flat terrain can be worse than if it was hilly, but it's got to be easier than the hills here D;

I know that joint pain is normal. Ankle pain, hip pain, and knee pain is normal. When you run, you're tearing your body apart until it gets used to the stress you're putting on it.

I figured out what I was doing wrong, though. I had to take off those $120 dollar shoes [they were my moms...she hated them, and never wore them but once. They had like 3 miles on them.], tie the laces together, put them around my neck, peel off my socks, and run barefooted. Which felt really good, it relaxed my arch a bit (: But I run heel-toe, which is bad. So I tried running on my toes. Which took the stress off my knees and put more on my hips. I tried running flatfooted, which put stress everywhere. It's honestly a pain in the ass -_- If it wasn't for the fact that it's a good stress reliever [I have nails now], I wouldn't do it and keep swimming.

Sigh.

  • Then try walking? Or even walking with short running bursts? Try using a treadmill inside where you can control the terrian and climate, instead of going outside where the terrian and weather bother you? Im sure there is some other form of exercise you can find to do if it really bothers you that much.

  • I agree with Cybe, try walking. Unless your training for a marathon or enjoy it, then there is no real reason to run. Power walking works really well, and should be a lot easier on your joints. I only run during interval training, and that's about 20 minutes max before I have to stop to make sure I'm not stressing my body. When I power walk, I can go for over and hour with a little muscle fatigue, but no joint pain.
    I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • Running is the quickest way to lose weight, period, because it absolutely kills your body and burns more calories. I can't stand treadmills, so no treadmills for me. I can't even walk on them, I think I'll fall off xD

I can run a decent bit, and I do like it. I have a love-hate relationship with it is all..

Plus, it'll help cross-train my swimming and softball.

  • Running may be the fastest way, but that doesnt make it the best. Because its tearing up everything and hurting your joints, I think it almost outweighs the advantage of fast weight loss. Consider that walking can be just as effective, and less stressful for your body, as long as you put the time into it. Especially if you're also swimming and playing softball.
When you sign a sports waiver, there is a little thing at the bottom that says NC will give you -blank- amount of money if -blank- injury happened. For example, if you lose a finger due to it being broken badly beyond repair, your family gets $500. If I happened to die due to an injury or if I were to drown at a swim meet, and die, my parents would receive $10,000.
Good to know what life is worth, eh?

Anyhow.
I'm glad I started running, because I have to run for my softball warm ups. :P
