Blue Nose Pit.

edited October 2010 in Vent
Got one! I'm not sure if this is a great "vent" haha, but she's the sweetest dog. My friend's mother was looking for a dog and she informed us she was making payments on a "shizu" and i was like NO WAY thats about useless. $900. bucks for the thing. so going through the interent I found a female year old blue nose pit that needed a home ASAP because her previous owners complex out lawed pitts. So if they didnt find her a home they'd have to take her to the pound. and at this local pound most the dogs are pitts because no one wants them. . so after meeting her and finding out she was current in vaccinations, micro chipped and house broken... my friend and I paid with every last penny (litterally) to get her. $250. brought her home.. at first her mother was nervous... saying that thats the one with lock jaw but once she got used to her shes fallen in love :D.

I wanted to post this because.. for the first time we let her off lease. She did more than great! even with other dogs, which she seems to have a problem with. shes not aggressive but she'll come off really strong towards other K9's. And... if the other dog starts the fight... she'll finish it unfortunatly. At first she was really scared of people so we immedatly started "desensitazation training" and now shes more than ok with people. Other dogs.. im not sure on "how" to train her on that. my friend and i have taught her "sit, and laydown" and working on sit pretty and shake. :)

I wanted to ask... is there any good tricks you know about pits? Trust me i've done a lot of research and know a lot about the diets but theres so many different books on training a pit. -_-

 • Number one rule about training a pit: Never be aggressive towards one.
But to train the dog to be different around other dogs, I would try this=
Every time the dog goes for a walk and walks past another dog either 1. Give the dog a treat if it's being good around other dogs, that dog will associate other dogs with good stuff, which is great :3
or 2. Stand between your dog and the stranger's dog and make the dog sit. Do not let your dog look at the other in any way. You can use treats and give your dog treats for good behaviors.
Just to be safe I wouldn't take the dog out off leash... At least not for now..

 • I know you've already spent a lot of money , but I suggest consulting a professional trainer, even if it's just once for advice. One visit shouldn't be too expensive. If you find a good trainer that has experience with the breed, then they can evaluate your dog, and try to point you towards the best method for your dog.

Good luck with your new dog.

 • Thank you guys for taking the time. =) I know the off leash thing is a bit sketched, but beleive me I made sure there was little contact with in a quarter mile. so she deffinatly had enough space to where I could control her and leash her before any close contact with man or animal was made. I'm more than aware to not be aggressive with a pit, shes really intellegent and I know theres many ways to ensure obedience.

once again, thank you!
