After I completed the mandatory years of exercise in high school I stopped exercising. Now, all my life I've typically been right in the middle of the healthy weight range for someone my size, but when I stopped exercising I started to creep up in weight. On and off for a year I tried modifying my diet, and exercising, but that only lasted 2 weeks at most. I had no motivation, and I guess it was because I was technically still normal(in the recommended weight range). Well, I eventually went about 2 pounds over the recommended weight range for someone my size, and the thought of being overweight kind of freaked me out. It definitely gave me the motivation I needed, and because of it I've lost a total of 13-15 pounds! 10 of them in the last 3-4 weeks(had to take a long break due to injury, but I managed to keep off the initial few pounds I lost before the injury). I feel so good, and not just because I've lost weight, but because I'm getting exercise, and eating a LOT better. If I keep up the pace, then I'll meet my ultimate goal by the end of the year, but I'd be more than happy to just loose 10 more pounds by Christmas.

For those of you that are also trying to loose weight(I know some of you have made posts), counting calories has really helped me see that somethings just aren't worth eating. Why eat a bag of potato chips worth 200+ calories, when you can have a turkey sandwich and some grapes for the same amount of calories? A turkey sandwich and some grapes are healthy, and they will fill you up, which will keep you from snacking on all that junk food throughout the day. I've also given up on fast food. I won't name names, but I looked up the calories in some meals from some fast food place, and some of them were like 1500+ calories each. That's almost the total daily recommended calories for a woman in ONE meal!! It's so shocking to me. I never realized that fast food was THAT bad for you.

Now...I just have to watch out for Halloween, which is also the day I celebrate my birthdays, so it's candy + cake + party food! Anyone have alternative party foods? Every year we typically just order pizza...which we probably still will do, because my brother will whine, but I'd like a healthier(and appealing) alternative for myself.

 • My birthday is actually -on- Halloween so I have lots of candy around then too. What we'd do for party things is order from subway. They can do a bunch of 6in on a party plate type of thing. Instead of chips you can have some pretzels (non-salted if you want to be even healthier). What we've done for cake is look at lowfat recipes for cakes (they exist!). There is also no fat brownie mixes out there and you could make that as well or instead of the cake.

And congrats on everything. I'm pretty jealous right now of it, actually. I have a personal trainer that I go to three times a week for 30min and on some off days I'll go and do more aerobic stuff. Its been a month for me and I've actually gained. I have fresh fruit every morning, normal portions, have lots of protein, etc. NOTHING! Im not in my healthy weight range and I haven't been since I was really young. Nice to see that it works for someone.

 • Tarnish, you may have gained weight because you're gaining muscle. Don't worry about what the scale says if the exercise is making you feel better, and eventually you'll see more results.

Prince Sushi, congratulations. Losing weight can be such a pain in the butt. It's good to see someone wanting to lose weight to be healthy, instead of wanting to be " skinny".

I knew someone was going to say that.. My trainer said I still shouldn't be gaining even if I am getting muscle. She said people like me should still be losing while getting muscle (people like me=people who have a good amount to lose). I dont feel thinner either and my clothes aren't getting that much baggier on me. I dont -feel- any different. *sighs*

 • I thought of another snack idea. Air-popped popcorn. Air poppers aren't very expensive and in the long run they'll actually save you money since you wont need to buy the micro-popcorn. If people dont like it plain, you can use some of the fake spray butter sparingly or they can add salt to theirs. They also sell other types of poweders to put on popcorn too that would work.

 • Nope, I've had that tested awhile ago. Maybe 2-3yrs. I had a full bloodwork down a couple months ago and nothing was wrong. I dont get it. D:
I have a problem with subway though, or at least the one out here. You order the sandwiches, and it appears that no matter what you put on them they go soggy within the 5 minute drive home. I've tried multiple times, with different orders. I got fed up with wasting my money, so I haven't had subway in over a year. I also thought about sandwiches(making our own), but my mother can sometimes have trouble with eating bread, and my brother wasn't open to the idea. He thinks it's too formal for our little party. lol?!

Hmm, I had a thought though. Maybe tacos? My brother can have them as unhealthy as he wants, and I can have mine all veggies, chicken, fish, or soy meat....I just don't know how much that would cost in comparison to a pizza, and it would obviously take some work to make. I wonder if any places make healthy or just regular tacos for parties at good prices.

Have you tried counting your calorie intake, and then reducing it by a little(like 100 calories)? I think the recommended amount a person should have is 1800-2000 calories a day, but not everyone's body works the same. If you eat 2000 calories a day, but you're only working off 1800 calories(what your body naturally burns, and what you burn through exercise), then you're actually going to gain weight(200 calories). Having an excess of 200 calories a day, means you'll gain about a pound every 17 days. Just don't give up, or a year from now you'll be telling yourself "Think of where I could be if I hadn't given up a year ago."

I'm not going to lie, the biggest reason why I'm dieting is to be thin. The second is to gain some endurance and muscle, because one day I might have to go through standard law enforcement training. Eating healthy wasn't my main goal, but there is just no way to restrict calories, and fill yourself up on junk food at the same time. I could eat a hamburger with fries, and drink some regular cola from a fast food place, which might meet my daily calorie limit all at one meal, but I'd probably be starving for the rest of the day since I already met my calorie limit. Now, a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread will be less than half the calories the hamburger meal would be, so in a couple hours when I'm hungry again I can actually eat something! I've found that most vegetables are low in calories, and you could eat them practically all day, and not go over your limit. Just last night I had a cooked green bell pepper stuffed with tomatoes, squash, and onions, topped with a slice of American cheese and 1 tbsp of salsa. Very filling, but low enough in calories that I could have some fruit yogurt for desert.

I agree. If you are overweight, then you should be loosing more than you gain from muscle. Everyone's bodies work differently, so maybe you should try something new. I run, which is hard on joints, but I've heard amazing things about swimming(try a gym or community center if you don't have your own pool), which apparently helps to loose weight, and build lean muscle.

 • Huh, we've gotten subway for little parties. We've never had them soggy. Sometimes we order then and leave off the dressings and add those at home because usually salad dressing is enough for those. If I think of something else I'll mention it. xD

Calorie counting- yes, I've tried and I just can't do it. I can't count when we make recipes or anything (only guess). It's one of those things I just can't stick with. I will do ok for three days and then just fall off of it. I probably tried maybe.. five times.

And I don't know what else I can do. I already go to the gym and use a treadmill/elliptical/bike and none of it works. I also don't think I live near an indoor pool. I dislike swimming in public too and don't really own bathing suits. ;;

But yeah, tacos could work! Maybe find some that uses turkey meat? I've had those before and you can't tell much of a difference.

By the way Sushi, my goals are the same as well. Im actually pretty healthy and all my numbers were in good range except for good colesterol and the weight (which all is lost from working out.. or should.. e.e). I'm mainly in it to wear all the clothes I want and be able to run far and maybe do a 5k run.

 • I know! I have friends that say they don't get soggy sandwiches from the Subway near them, but the one where I live is horrible. I've even had Subway in the area where I used to live, and while they would go soggy within a day, they were fine to make it through the drive home. I just can't stand it. Even our Quiznos is bad. They barely serve sandwiches out here anymore. It's insane, a sandwich place that barely serves sandwiches.

It can be hard to count. I also used to do a lot of guess work, and like you, I'd stop after a couple days. What has helped me stick to it is writing everything down in a journal. Planning meals, including calculating the calories, the prior day also helped.

Yeah we do have similar goals. There are so many clothes I would like to wear, but I'm too self conscious at the moment. I've really gotten into wanting dresses(1940's -1950's styles), but wearing dresses means showing legs. My legs(mainly my thighs) are probably the body part I'm least happy with. I've always hated them! All the girls in my family have big hips, and are curvy. If we put on just a little weight, we end up looking super wide. If I can loose 10 more pounds by Christmas I'm going to get myself a nice 1950's styled dress as a present.

I like running too, but I don't know if I could do a marathon. I'm 5'2", so I just can't go the same distance as a taller person can without getting tired. I wish I could though. It would be nice to do things like charity runs...I've done charity walks. lol. I understand what you are going through, and wish you the best of luck. Just keep trying things, eventually something will work.

 • Maybe you can make your self a pizza like whole west dough and use veggies and lowfat cheese (soo good with diced tomatoes xD)

 • I've never made a homemade pizza, and it sounds like a lot of work. My brother probably wouldn't eat it anyways. He thinks he's manly, because he refuses to eat healthy food. That's why I liked the idea of tacos, because everyone can choose what is on theirs...but I told my brother that idea, and he said it was stupid.

At this point I think we might be just ordering a pizza, but the pizza place has this DELICIOUS salad. It's a little pricey, but I love it. As long as I get that, then I won't mind, but I'm still looking for ideas.
