The Wolves of Mercy Falls

edited September 2010 in General Discussion
Love love love these books. It was just another one of those random trips to Target when you have nothing better to do and Erin and I stumbled upon Shiver and Linger, which are the first two books in the trilogy.. the third comes out in June. >D

Anywho. They're about a pack of wolves, who aren't entirely wolves. Here's some plot summaries from the author's site.

Shiver
For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human... until the cold makes him shift back again. Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

Linger
In Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past . . . and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabel, who already lost her brother to the wolves . . . and is nonetheless drawn to Cole. At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love—the light and the dark, the warm and the cold—in a way you will never forget

And finally, the one that isn't out yet, is called Forever. There aren't any blurbs about it, so I have no idea what it is about, but I love it. I'm addicted.

  • I was looking at those and had thought about getting them... I haven't been doing much reading outside of schoolwork lately though xD

I was interested because I believe those are the ones that flip perspectives? It's first person but it switches between two people? I was thinking of doing that for my book so I wanted to read them to see if it was confusing or not XD
All good things must come to an end. All endings will begin new good things.

  • I'm on my touch pod, so I won't get over-elaborate like I want to (lmao).
I've read both of them, I think that they're amazing books, and ai can't wait until Forever comes out.
They do flip perspective. First person through both the girl (main character) and the wolf-boy. :p Its actually not confusing like some books I've read are that are like that, it actually gets into three perspectives in Linger.
I can't really say too, too much..since I'll give it away since neither of you have read them yet D: But I highly recommend them, they're great "werewolf" books. :D

  • Yup. :D Shiver is from Sam and Grace's perspectives, then Linger is from Grace, Sam, Isabel (you meet her in the first one), and Cole.. so far. I haven't gotten to the end yet.

  • Saw those books while browsing for another book to read on my Nook, and thought they sounded really stupid, kind of a 6th grade reading level kind of thing.
Are they any good, not from your prospective, but from everyone's?

Sometimes its fun to read those "stupid 6th grade reading level" books. I personally havent read them so I dont know what theyre like. They sound good to me. I happen to like reading books from my past. I still read books that are on low levels. They can have good plots, and just be a good story. It might only take an hour to read, but it can still be good. The reading level has nothing to do with a good story. Just saying.
Ehm. I'm a senior in high school, and I've been reading well above my level since I started reading.. so no, this is not a '6th grade reading level kind of thing', though that seems like it would be your kind of book. They're actually very good, they aren't your typical werewolf, someone out to crush everything, girl gets killed or maimed romance novel, they're actually very unpredictable, which I like, because most things you read are predictable right down to the last page.

  • That's why I loved this serious, Vi. They're nothing like some of the other werewolf books I've read.
Another book I thought was great for a different type of werewolf was Raised by Wolves. Not to get off topic, but I'd suggest that one to you too xD
I've actually been reading more Stephen King lately. Seems to fit my mood more, and I really don't have time for the skinny books :/ Unless they're over 500 pages, I won't read them nowadays. Unless it's a combined series, like the Fallen [The Fallen and Leviathan, etc] or the Sweep series. We just don't have the kind of money to spend on books. I have to drag out a 400 page book and make it last a few weeks before I can buy another one. What's the page count for these books?
I'd have them finished in an hour, maybe less depending on how captivating they are. I'll have to look at them, but I'm getting to the point where anything romance-y in books pisses me off to no end.

  • Hmm maybe I will check these out.. I'd have to wait until my next book shopping day because I like to buy my books instead of borrowing.

Uhh how in the world can you read 360p book in an hour or less? 306p divded by 60minutes equals 6 pages a minute. Im a fast reader but I dont see how you can possibly do 360 in 60min unless you read every other word, in which case you miss a lot in a book. I have been known to skip over words and paragraphs but that is mainly when its describing how a location looks and things like that (I have a hard time picturing so descriptions like that do nothing). Even with skipping whole paragraphs every once in awhile or just quickly running your eyes over, I still dont get how you can do 6p in a minute. o.0
Depending on the book, I've been known to complete 300-350 page books in about that. Page count really isn't reliable when book and font sizes vary. You also have to take into account the difficulty of the book, and how interesting the reader finds it. I wish authors would start listing word count, instead of page count, since it's a slightly more reliable way to tell how fast you read.

As for the books mentioned, they sound like teen love stories, which I don't enjoy. Too much fantasy for my tastes, and the reviews I've been reading are comparing them to books like Twilight, but with wolves.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
I actually like it because it's nothing like Twilight, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

  • Sounds interesting, but I am in the middle of reading two books and I've been "reading" them for about a month now. xD I have no time to read. Haha.

Have you read The Shapeshifters The Kiesha'ra Of The Den Of Shadows? Those are pretty good books, it's a romance book I suppose.
  • Everyone is comparing books to Twilight these days... and sometimes I think people twist things to make them like Twilight -.- from what I know of these books, they aren't like that. Sadly, I have no time for reading anything much lately D: plus, I spent all my money on other things (woops)

I find it highly impossible to read 6 pages a minute too...unless, like tarn said, you are skipping a lot of the book... in which case, why even bother reading it? Go look at a summary online and you'll get the same effect. =/

I like anything with romance xD So long as it isnt cheesy (there's this really cheesy vampire series... I ended up repulsed by the fact that teenagers were referring to adults as "grown-ups" >.> Sounds like Rugrats talk to me)
All good things must come to an end. All endings will begin new good things.
Thank you for saying that. As I've said in the past, I like Twilight, I'm not afraid to admit it, I just don't like what it has become. These books are nothing like Twilight, nobody is idolized or looked up to like in Twilight, the main characters are so normal, so.. everyday people. I like it. I didn't say everyone had to, but I was just throwing it out there because I think they are good books, and I thought others may want to read them.
