ok so ever since I started doing Barrel Racing and Pole Bending this annoying brat is copying me (well kinda cuz she only walks and trots) she has a 2 yr old and 22 yr old horse she is doing barrels and poles on...she is so annoying! she can only trot or else shes scared! I told her her horses are too young and too old..she dont care! Im like ok kill your horses it wont be my fault!
I love horses but she just wants to out do me...she wants to get a 4 wheeler but her dad wont let her unless she gets rid of her horses :) im gonna be SOOOOOOO happy if she does!!! she hates her sisters "mean" horse that i LOVE and she is VERY good!!

  • Lol that's odd.
I dislike trotting, but I'm fine with going faster or slower. It's just that I'm very very light and small so I bounce really high. Well that is depending on how smooth the horse is of course XD

  • Well, the age of the horse, yes 2 is too young, but my grandmother has a 23 year old barrel horse. Her name is Popcorn and Popcorn was still winning barrel races at age 19-20. She would still be going strong if she hadn't of developed arthritis in her right front shoulder =(
  • (this should be at the end..but I'm on my touch pod and it won't let me go back down to the bottom)
I don't see why you'd be so upset that she's "copying" you either, you should be happy she thinks of you as a role model, she's obviously not outdoing you if she's not actuly running.
As for her being too scared to go faster than a trot-so what? I find it extremely rude that you'd laugh at her for that, it seems as though (if I only knew this part about you) that you'd fit into the stereotype of stuck-up, snobby riders. I dealt with my fair share of those when I went to fair, and I told every one of them off. Maybe she just wants to learn, and maybe she has different areas of comfort.
I feel more comfortable walking and cantering than I do trotting, that's not because I'm too scared to trot though. I have issues cantering and running some horses, either because I have to compromise my seat and position in krder to stay on, or because they're a bit tough to handle at the canter because they get excited. I'm scared to canter or run Poco. I'm not scared of him, he respects me and both of us know it, I just don't enjoy his canter and I pay more attention to staying on than actually controlling him, as I can't sit his canter at all.
But overall-maybe try to think about where this girl is coming from. Not everyone is brave or confident around horses and it's something they need to build up with time. I'm naturally comfortable and confident around them, my cousin isn't so much. She loves them, and she's love to run games like I do-she just has to work up to it.
I hope I don't sound too rude in this, it's just my opinion on the topic though. It's something I'm passionate about, and I'd rather see people try to help out others than to be stuck-up about it and think they're so much better. I've dealt with people like that (a few at my barn and at shows) and it gets old quick, just trying to give you some advice.

Truthfully, by you telling her she's going to kill her horses if she trots them through the barrel pattern-you're just as bad (of not worse in my opinion) than she is. Trotting a 22 yr old that's in perfectly fine health probably does it more good than just sitting in a field, especially if the horse is better of having work to do like our old man at the barn. He's 25/26 and he's still giving lessons, doing a decent amount of trotting and his arthritis actually gets noticably better if he does this, as opposed to just being in the field.
I could see of this girl was running him hard and trying to spin him like a Reiner, but trotting the patterns isn't going to do anything too bad.
As for the 2 yr old, I would personally start ground work, desensitization, etc with a horse at that age, but not back the horse until it was three or so, and only if the knee/growth plates were fully fused. I know my friend started his colt at a little earlier than two years, he started him out completely bareback and saved his pony the weight of the actual saddle. He's 3 now and running games, I don't have a huge problem with him being run at this age, as both his knees and back are fused-I just have an issue when a horse os noticably still uncomfortable at the walk with a rider on, and they're trying to run them.
Trotting a 2 yr old through patterns isn't going to completely ruin him. If it's only every once and awhile to ge the horse used to shows and the arena, I think it's fine.
You see all these 2 yr old colts an fillies out on the track racing full out, you don't seethe majority of them completely unsound sitting in a field by 8, we have a 17 yr old OTTB mare at our barn still runnig games and placing. Some horses mature faster than others, some are slower.
I think it's rather rude to assume that she's "killing" her horses by excersizing them.
A girl at my barn takes her 2 yr old on trail rides with us, she hops off and walks him down the steep hills until he gets more coordinated and his plates fuse. She took him to fair and rode him in the shows. She didn't place with him in anything other than halter, but she gave him the chance to experience to learn and trust her in a new environment.

  • Woah.. I don't think anyone said anything about being scared for trotting... I said I disliked trotting myself because I fly off the horse easily because I'm light...

  • I never said you were scared of trotting, newfgirl, I used myself as an example because mysterous love said the girl who was "copying" her was scared of doing anything fasster than a trot, people really need to learn to read everything before they come at the poster.
As for OP-I believe your last sentence says something about how you were like 'i was like wow ok then kill your horses...' or something similar? I'm pretty positive that I'm not going blind or something. if you didn't say that to her, you shouldve specified. We only know what you type and we read.
Please read everything thoroughly before replying and getting attitude/defensive.

  • sorry i had to get off right away and only had a little time to read some of it.
i just found out her arabian is actually 30...i never thought of me as her role model...but it really doesnt seem to me like i am hers cause she is snobby and tries to do better then everyone else in EVERY sport she plays (or tries to play lol) like Volleyball and Basketball.
She never knew what barrel racing or pole bending was till I told her I do it and she dont know how to do it.
I know I have ALOT better of horse to ride too lol...she overworks her horses and hates them .
One time I took my friend that I do barrels and poles with to my church and she was a TOTAL snob to her! I was SOO mad at her I wanted to deck her! I think its cause she know me and Viki are ALOT better then her on this one thing.
    qqz5hd.png

So, because you think she thinks she is better than you, that makes it alright for you to think you are better than her? Humans have this habit of projecting their feelings onto others. She may not feel like she is better than you, but rather is reacting to your own sense that you are better than her and putting her down because her horses are older and she isn't as good as you at riding.

The point of most sports is to be the best you can be and sometimes, that means trying to be better than everyone else. It's not about trying to be worse than everyone else.

Just a suggestion, but before accusing others of unwanted things, maybe you should look at yourself and see if you have any flaws. It might help you be more understanding of other people.
    Along for the ride!
• I understand I have flaws...She just believes (and everyone tells her) she is better then anyone else. No I know I am better then her at riding I dont really try to show it to her though I am nice to her but she is a snob back to me.

Sorry this was a LONG over due vent lol

  • Oh no, that was aimed toward the OP, Newfgirl, not you.
unless I quote a post or actually say: "Name here, blah blah blah." then I'm either talking in general or towards the OP.
Again, the not completely reading part was aimed towards OP.
I apologize for confusing you and not fully explaining it and re-addressing people.
btw, OP, how much younger than you is this girl? • so not even a year? only about 4 months, or is there a year or two different.
Also, just to get an idea for the age group, are you in middle school, etc. Or a grade if you feel comfortable saying, it doesn't matter though, I'm just trying to come up with a few..solutions, maybe?
They seem like the best thing, even if you don't become friends, it's important to be civil and on semi-decent terms, especially within the horse world.

  • okay, so just my views on this last post of yours first.

You said she only loves the attention, but you love horses.
-Dont you enjoy comments on your horses about how pretty they are and all that? I'm sure we all love attention, I sure love it when people tell me how good a rider I am for only starting to ride more often the past 2 years, and how beautiful the horse I'm riding is, or even how nicely drawn the piece I did looks.
-Are you positive she doesn't actually like horses? Even of it's that stage that quite a few girls go through, it doesn't mean she doesn't actually like them. If she stays into horses, then that's great-hopefully you'll keep in touch on friendly terms and be able to be business partners or such if you'd both like to get into the horse businesses. That's the reason I haven't actually said some things to my barn owner/trainer, I want to be able to be on good terms for deals, help, etc if I ever need it, and Ill do the same back.

I'm sure you don't actually want her horses dead, even if you hate Arabians for some reason..
-Why do you hate Arabs?
--I don't particularly like the ones bred for their dishy face, just because that isn't something I like seeing in a horse. Arabians can be amazing horses though. I've seen hot as hell Arabs, and I've seen Arabs you could sit a 5 year old just learning how to ride on and they'd be relatively safe. Arabs that don't have the dishy head, and aren't too hot, but not really calm are the ones I like. They're mainly used for endurance racing, and Id love to do that with one eventually.
--I don't see a huge reason why you hate them, as some I've seen don't have the dished heads or characteristics of the breed that really stand out. I've seen horses at fair that I wouldn't have guessed to be full Arab, but they turned out to be after I talked to their riders/owners/friends.

But anyway...yeah, just my thoughts and opinions/experiences.
well i dont own the horse my friend does but yeah i guess so...
well lol i just never really preferred the breed...i ride western and normally they are english..thats not why though lol idk i just never really did especially compared to quarter horses and paints and appys as i have grown up around them. but i am going to someones house next summer and help train welsh ponies and he has had some arabs and he liked them but i think i will grow to like them :) would you like pics of the horse i compete with and the ponies i will be working with?

  • Ah, and sure, Id love to see pics. I like Welsh ponies, mainly section c and d, but I'm too big for them. :p
I didn't even see one Arab decked out in English tack at fair xD
I saw a Perch, a few QHs, a TB or two, and other random breeds/grades. Not even one Arab, haha.
I've only ridden western myself, Ive never even touched an English saddle in my life. Or a bridle forthat matter, lol.

I'm hoping that this summer I may be able to find a summer, live-in working student position with a relatively close trainer. I'd love to go over to Ohio and learn some stuff with about reining, cutting and roping.
And I might be going to an Equestrian school in WV after I graduate for equine sciences w. an emphasism for farrier work. :D and then take classes on training and instructing as well. :3 Not positive if it will happen though, I'm hoping, haha.
