SHELTER DOGS ARE A RISK YOU GAIS!!!

edited August 2010 in Vent
I HATE it when people don't give two cents about how many shelter dogs are in the shelter and they think it's OKAY to breed whatever they want because it's "cute" "hypoallergenic"...whatever. It's a mutt and unless it serves a purpose it's just like a shelter dog sitting in a shelter waiting to die.

Someone on another forum (actually a few people) said that they would NEVER adopt from a shelter/rescue because it's a risk for the safety of their children. Like OMAIGAD it's so gonna rip off your child's arm after it has been through aggresion tests! Oh ya. ;D They said a lot more but I won't post it.

And these are the same people that would JUMP you if you said ANYTHING about an APBT, yet it's perfectly fine to bash a shelter dog. -_-
They state that you don't know what kind of dog you are getting when you adopt from a shelter, but little do they know that the doodlepoo they are buying could turn into a monster as it gets older.
In fact, the breeder of the gooldendoodle...labordoodle...poopydoodle? I don't know - anyways he/she said he REGRETS inviting the breed...I don't remember why but I saw the headline on some news thing.
If I had found an English Bulldog around here in a shelter, I would have adopted it...
People are so heartless.

  • shelter dogs are the best they have been through more life and have more love than any purebreed, even though i have two purebreeds those dogs where birthday presents that my parents got for each other but i also have a mutt who is the cutest thing in the world he didnt come from a shelter he was found on the side of the street..if i was rich with tons of land i would take dogs in shelters that werre about to be put to sleep and keep or rehome most of them but they would not be uthanized...i hate seeing animals in shelters..all they do is sit there in a cage and there life waste away...i will defend and shelter or ABPT......my aunt who past away this april rescued a dog that was about to be put asleep..this dog wasnt the cutest at all it has a tiny little head and a big body but she wouldnt let it be put to sleep ..now my grandparents have it.......and my aunt use to rescue pits from the pound that were about to be uthanized and rehome them.........there is nothing rong with shelters in my opinion they are better than any dog u would buy from a fancy expensive breeder

  • A lot of doodle poodle scmoodle whatever 'designer' dogs are puppy mill dogs too.
So I guess those people on other forums are just saying they'd rather buy from a puppy mill from a shelter.. I believe puppy mill dogs are WAY more dangerous than any shelter dog out there. XD

I think if you're looking for a decent pet quality dog a shelter is a great place to look- Same goes for cats.
It's probably safer than taking chances with a breeder, most people get too excited about getting a puppy they're willing to have it shipped to them without asking the breeder things or visiting.

At least shelter dogs are more predictable usually and have some training usually =]

  • Shelter dogs can be a risk, since some of them have been put through poor, or abusive situations where they have not received the appropriate training or socialization. Many of the dogs, even those that are friendly, can become very frightened in a shelter, which can look like aggression to adopters. The dog I adopted back in January was so scared that he scared the employees, so they did not even know if he was a boy or girl until the day we filled out the adoption papers. Once he was home, and getting good care he became a complete snuggle bug. Also, a lot of shelters do not perform aggression tests beyond the obvious. I've been to many shelters in my lifetime, and not one has ever done any sort of detailed aggression tests like they do on shows like Animal Cops. Going to a shelter, and adopting a dog can also be overwhelming to some people when you look at the homely situations most breeders set up. Overall, I don't really care if someone adopts a dog, or buys from an ethical breeder. The only thing I don't agree with is buying from profit breeders.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • I agree with you sushi, I don't like profit breeders either.
If you're actually doing breeding correctly you'll spend almost the same amount of money on the health checks and things as you get when you sell the dogs

  • My shelter puts dogs through aggression tests, and makes families fill out forms that will help them match them up with proper dogs. They shelter I work at is not state run or w/e though, so there is a difference there. The people running this one actually care about the safety and well being of both the people and the dogs. Most of the volunteers know so much about the dogs you'd think they lived with them. I love working there since it's all animal lovers working there. Local shelters (animal control and whatnot) tend to be run by people who are just keeping a job.

There is a difference between every shelter. I wouldn't trust dogs from "county" shelters (ones that put dogs to sleep after a week, don't bother socializing or walking dogs, etc.) because, those people in those don't care about the dogs. They also don't care whether the dogs come and go.

I would adopt dogs from privately owned shelters, rescue groups, etc. though. And I don't promote breeding of designer mutts. The whole idea of them has just caused puppy mills to flourish, which really ticks me off.
All good things must come to an end. All endings will begin new good things.
