Forensics.

edited August 2010 in General Discussion
So, we are doing things that are related to the choices we want to take with our careers when we get out of high school. I've officially decided that I'm going into forensic science. I'm in class right now and we have been taking career tests in two different classes today and forensics has popped up as number one on both tests. I've been interested in this for a while and this just sets my mind on it even more!! Yay! I'm actually VERY excited about going to college to study this. It interests me so much!! =D

  • I took a forensic science class in high school.

So much fun.

We analyzed blood spatters, did blood typing, looked at paternity tests and such, finger printing, general evidence collection, bullet analysis, played with fire (lit a bunch of fabrics on fire to see the differences), did impact tests... And played with cyanide and other dangerous chemicals. |D

  • That sounds SO fun!!! I want to do it SO bad!!
  • Good luck~ My cousin was going to be one, but changed her mind. She's still getting her biochemistry degree when she graduates from UCLA in summer, but I think she's now going to go into dental school.

Forensics covers so many things, which part(s) are you interested in?
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • Criminalistics =D I'm going to study to be a Field analyst (investigator that go to crime scenes, collect evidence, and process the scene.)
  • That sounds really cool!
Good luck! I hope you are able to get through school and get your dream job~

  • One thing Forensics class will teach is that field analysts are not all they're cracked up to be. xD Usually the cops are the ones to actually collect evidence and such. ._.

Did you know it takes like. 18 years of schooling outside of high school to be the person who autopsies bodies to discover cause of death and such? I'm totally spacing on what they're called right now (Just woke up..) but I was like "Jeeze."

Coroner? =D and yea I know! It takes like FOREVER for some classes!! I'm hoping that Forensic doesnt take very long. I'm REALLY good at noticing small things that are out of place and stuff like that.

I agree. That's what both of my law enforcement courses said. It's cheaper to just give the police officers basic knowledge on how to handle and preserve a crime scene, than to hire a field specialist. One of my courses, the one that went into more detail, said that forensic scientists often end up having to work for private labs in order to supplement their income, and work hours, and that you may be required to move to large cities to find employment.

Both of my books thoroughly made is clear that the majority of crime dramas, like CSI, are absolutely nothing like the real deal. I have a feeling this is a big reason why my cousin changed her mind. She is, or was at the least, a big fan of CSI.

  • Well I do love CSI, NCIS, and Law and Order, but I have been interested in this field way before I began watching those shows, ya know? I don't know why but I just think that it's cool =D I could also work in a lab if it came down to the pay =) The thing i like most is that you can possibly work for the FBI or CIA =D
If you could get work with the FBI or CIA, then I'm sure you'd be fine.
It's the local law enforcement agencies that tend to not hire them due to budgets.

  • Yea, that's always been my dream!! To work for the FBI or CIA lol I've always been really interested in it! My momma has pictures of me holding up a magnifying glass and a fake FBI badge that my brother drew for me! xD If I can get her to dig it out tomorrow ill upload it! xD
  • The forensics lab is usually not very special at all. Someone else collects evidence and will drop it off on your desk ;P It's not at all like TV, and your forensics class should tell you this eventually.

It's also usually in a secluded place. Our class taught us that it's for reserved people, because you usually work alone/away from everyone.

TV shows do a horrid job at everything, really. While evidence is collected fairly quickly at the scene, cases can last forever to get solved. TV makes it seem like WOO WE ALL FIGURED IT OUT IN A COUPLE DAYS. Not the case at all. Turned me completely away from forensics. I never would have done it as a career anyway, though I do love Dexter <3
All good things must come to an end. All endings will begin new good things.

Who is Dexter?

and..

To clear this from everyones minds, I don't want to go into Forensics because of some TV show. I've always wanted to go into Forensics even before I started watching TV shows about it.
  • Dexter is a show on Showtime xD He does blood spatter analysis for his job, though that has hardly anything to do with the show xD Wouldn't suggest it for younger audiences, lmao.

And I know ;P I wasnt saying it was because of TV. I'm just saying, it's pretty much the opposite of what TV makes it out to be xD
