Possibly getting a new dog xD

Okay so im TOTALLY excited. Ive always LOVED australian shepherd. I love merles the most. Theyre fluffy, smart, built beautifully and overall awesome! Ive begged my mom and dad for one for YEARS! My mom has always said no because "Theyre too expensive" Im drill team one of my friends had this little Mini aussie that a breeder GAVE her because the breeder thought the color was ugly and he didnt sell quick enough =O I told her her doggie Vegas was georgeous and that i was jelous xD. Her mom called mine today and told her the breeder has a BLUE MERLE that she's going to give away and that she wanted to know if i wanted him. OF COURSE i said yes so she's gonna call the breeder and tell her i want him *EPIC HAPPINESS* This puppy is EXACTALLY what ive always wanted! He might be a mini but that'll make him easier to feed when i go to college! He'll be a good agility dog, he's blue merle, AND HE's A BOY! I REALLY hope i get him!

xD end. Im just TOTALLY excited

  • I can't remember where I read this but mini aussies are in fact nothing related to the Australian Shepherd. They are basically a designer breed (which I am strongly against the selling of mutts outside of Animal Shelters), I think they are bred with several different toy breeds to create the aussie look. And the breeder doesn't seem very reliable if she's willing to give a dog out because she thought it was "ugly" or "didn't make the sell" money is all it's about. Several Aussie clubs and the AKC are strongly against the breeding of mini aussies and do not recognize them as a form of Australian Shepherd.
I would do more research on the breed, but I'm sure he will make a great agility dog and/or a companion. :D
  • Avla, I'm thinking you must be thinking of a different dog. Maybe the Klee Kai, which is often mistaken as a miniature husky, but was produced by breeding multiple breeds together? The Klee Kai is the first that comes to my mind when you mention it looking like one breed, but not actually being it.

The Miniature Australian Shepherd was developed directly from the Australian Shepherd. Throughout the history of the Aussie, small (under 18") dogs can be seen in historical photographs. Many believe that the original Aussie was selectively bred larger as sheep ranching decreased and cattle ranching increased. Cattle ranchers preferred a larger dog to work the larger stock. Some Aussie owners have continued to prefer the smaller sized Aussie while others prefer the larger.

The ASCA also doesn't really say that they are strongly against breeding mini aussies, just that they don't view them as Australian shepherds, and thus won't accept them as the same breed.
It is the mission of this club and the mission of its members to preserve the breed rather than
change it."

Now, whether someone wants to listen to the ASCA is up to them, but I personally think it's a stupid reason to not accept miniatures. Genetically they are aussies, but smaller. That shouldn't mean they need to be an entirely new breed. As far as I can tell, the miniature and standard don't even appear to have more/less severe health risks. Some of these clubs...I dunno, I'm sort of beginning to think some of the people are snobby.

Anyways, I do agree that the breeder's actions are concerning. How do you know you're not going to get a dog with horrible defects? Breeding merles is something that needs to be done by someone who knows what they are doing, or you'll end up with a very pitiful dog. I've also never heard of a breeder just giving away dogs for free, because they didn't sell fast enough, or come out the right color. Might as well light some $100 bills on fire. Definitely, meet the dog before agreeing to take it, and get a vet to evaluate it's eyes and ears once it's in your possession.

Assuming this really is a once in a lifetime deal, then I hope everything works out for you. Mini aussies are supposed to be just as good at agility as the standard size.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • Maybe, I don't know.
I'm still against anything being miniaturized that wasn't originally suppose to be miniaturized, like the husky, aussie, etc. and the reason that being is the breeders intent, majority or people want a small dog for whatever reasons and the breeders think that by miniaturizing a bigger dog that they can produce something everyone will want to buy...and it works. It's about money, and I'm not saying all designer, mini, etc. breeders are that way.

Even English Bulldogs are being miniaturized and there quality is not that great by looking into a few breeders, I even saw one in person last week. Bulldog pups are suppose to be plump and have wrinkles a little amount to a large amount, the ones I have seen that have been miniaturized do not meet the breed standards at all, and the puppy I saw was thin and had no wrinkles and her under bite was twice as bad as a normal EB.
I don't like teacups either. Usually, when things began to get smaller there is a lot of inbreeding done.
  • Ive been doing research of aussies for years. Not mini's but ive seen some stuff that says theyre are directly descended from them health wise, ect.
My puppy is full brother to my friends dog so since he is solid im guessing at least one of my puppies parents has to be solid. Plus her puppy doesnt have any health issues and was given away for the EXSACT same reason so im HOPING (i know it doesnt mean anything tho) that my puppy will be the same. Its probably not gonna be a confirmation champion but i was wanting something a little more hyper to take to college with me. But i didnt want anything TOO big. Plus.. i have PLENTY of sheep for him to chase xD
