The Most Well-Behaved Dogs

Last night I saw what could've been the most well-behaved dogs on the planet.

I'm wondering-what's the most well-behaved dog you've ever seen and what did they do that was so....well-behaved? Just a fun little thing to share. Here's my story:

Last night we were driving to the grocery store and I saw two big black labs laying near these bushes in a parking lot area. They wern't tied up or anything, they were just laying there calmly. I said to my parents "Did you see those labs over there?" They said they knew the owner and the dogs could stay anywhere if he told them to. So then, in the parking lot of the grocery store, we see them again. This time they were walking with their owner. Not on a leash. Just following him very nicely. We went up to them since my parents knew the owner and started talking. We were petting the dogs and one of them just layed down in the middle of the parking lot. They didn't care about all the people around them, they were just very layed back. Then, the man started backing up to leave and without even being told to do so both of the dogs got up and started following him. Like magic. No running off to greet someone, just heeling as if there was an invisible leash.

The secret? Well, they're obviously very well socialized. He said he takes them for 4 walks a day. Man, I wish my dogs behaved like that.

  • I had a friend who had a dog that well trained. =3 Her name was Annie, and I loved that dog. Big German Shepherd collie mix, not the prettiest dog, but she adored me. xD She wasn't the most friendly towards other dogs, but she knew some really interesting commands. Whenever she got really riled up, barking, jumping, whining, too excited, too aggressive, etc, someone would just say "Annie, be a lady." and she'd immediately stop whatever she was doing and sit down and be as calm as could be. She really liked to chase cats, but would never catch them. Just chase 'em, so she also knew the command "Annie, get the kitty!" But the best part about this command was how well she was trained in boundaries. If you left the door open, she would stand there, and even if you were outside playing around, she wouldn't leave the house unless invited. Then, if you called her outside, she would not leave the yard unless told to, even when chasing cats. It was pretty amazing. She walked really well on the leash, so my friend and I would take her on walks, and then if we decided we wanted to go to KFC or something, we'd tuck her leash under her collar, and he would say "Annie, go home." and she'd trot home, using only the sidewalks. If we were on the other side of a busy intersection, she would go down side streets to avoid the traffic. It was amazing. xD

  • I never met the guy, but saw him on a daily basis with the best behaved dog I'd ever seen. He was a somewhat elderly man, probably in his 70's, and he ran/owned a pawn shop. For a constant companion, he had a doberman pinscher and by constant, the dog went everywhere with him. I never saw a leash with the dog either and I'd seen him set the dog outside the doors of a restaurant and a bank and the dog never moved, never even looked away from the door while the man was inside. When walking, the dog was at constant heel and never waivered, never even thought of dropping its nose to sniff at something. I doubt the gentleman worried too much about being robbed when the dog was around. LOL

  • Wow, my grandmother had a Golden Retriever that would close doors 0.0 we would be like "Crook, go close the door honey" and she would walk over to the door and close it 0.0 or if she pushed one open we would be like "Crook, what did we teach you?" and the door would push closed behind her xD She even brought the horses up from pasture, which is the amazing part. We would say like "Go get Popcorn" and she would run into the pasture and herd Popcorn up the main gate xD we could tell her to go to the shed and get the horse brush and she would run get it and bring it back to us. The most amazing thing i think though, is that we could hand her the lead rope or the reigns and be like "Crook, take him/her to the trailer/gate/house." and she would walk with the lead rope/reigns in her mouth and the horse would follow her, when she got to where we wanted the horse then she would sit down and hold the rope till we made it up there and wouldn't let the horse wonder off anywhere. She passed away about 6 months ago though now they have a dumb little Shi-Tzu that runs around and hits her head on everything... *sigh*
  • A man in my neighborhood walks a chocolate lab like that everyday, but it ticks me off. I'm a very strong supporter of leash laws, regardless of how well behaved the dog is.

The most well behaved dog I've actually been around(I've only ever seen the lab), were almost all the dobermans my family has owned, with the exception of at least one. She was in permanent puppy mode, and would jump 8 foot tall fences with electric wiring on the top, but she didn't live pass 1-2 years due to a brain problem. Anyways, a rust colored one that my grandmother had named Sarge(Sergeant) would follow right next to her without being asked, would lay/sit down and stay when commanded, would follow her upstairs and sleep next to her bed without getting up all night, babysat the family kids, was never people or dog aggressive, would jump in the back of the Jeep when told to, and in all honesty I don't even remember him barking, so he was fairly quiet. He was the politest dog I've ever been around, even though some of our other dobermans could be comparable. Unfortunately, he was killed by my mother's large doberman named Major. Major was almost as great as Sarge, but when he started to loose his senses(sight & sound) due to aging, he developed aggressive tendencies, and killed Sarge one day. I was young then, but I won't forget that day.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • Wow garnet, I can't believe the dog would lead the horses around.

Yes, I believe in leash laws too for other people's and your dogs safety, however he obviously trusts his dogs enough to walk with him and they trust him. However I wouldn't allow my dogs to walk with no leash, I'd freak out about every car, person, or animal that passed.

  • Me too, because no matter how well you trust your dog, you can't trust other dogs or people not to do something that will cause your dog to be put at danger.

  • The most well behaved dogs I ever knew were Chauncey, and Lola.
Chauncey was my old Newfie, he pretty much would do the same those labs would do. He was a great dog. He would find ways to get out of the fence, but when he did he'd walk himself to the beach and back XD

Lola is one of my Shibas. Let me tell you this; they are not well behaved by nature. You have to work HARD to get them just right. Many have pulling issues, almost all of them tend to bolt. Lola's fine, I mean I wouldn't take the chance to take her off leash without a fence or agility equipment nearby, but when there is agility equipment around I know it's safe. I'd have to FORCE her to run away when she's around that.

Molly, my Boston, is the best off leash dog anywhere. But she's kind of a tard sometimes at home.

Troy my other Shiba is robot perfect conformation dog, that dog is honestly a super model version of a dog. If you've ever seen Zoolander, he's just like the one guy who has the same facial expression for every emotion, and he kinda looks like the guy too XD
