This isn't impotrant, it's actually rather dumb, but I just had to get this out.

The other day we went to the petstore. They had their animals in seperate rooms. There was a reptile room, fish room, rodent room, and bird room. The rest of the store was simply pet supplies. As with most pet stores, dogs were allowed to come in so long as they were on a leash. I saw this couple with a large dog walking around, and they went into the rodent room. They didn't care that their dog was sniffing the cages full of baby rabbits and guniea pigs, getting up close to the tiny, fragile animals. Seriously, those little things could have a heart attack from a dog like that, that they've never seen.

I know maybe those people didn't know that bunnies are so sensitive and fragile, but you'd think they could keep their dog out of the room or at least stop him from sniffing all the animals like that. It's also partly the petstore fault, they should tell people not to bring dogs into those rooms. And there was two people so one could've easily waited with the dog while the other went in. It just makes me a little mad that the dog was doing that and the owners didn't care. They may not know any better but they could at least have the common sense to keep their big dog away from the tiny animals. :x

End of pointless rant, thanks for reading

  • It's easy to forget that we(humans) are larger, and often times just as unfamiliar as a dog. I'd be willing to bet that the dog was no more frightening than the 2 owners. I'm not saying it was a necessarily a good idea to take the dog in there(since they can do more than just sniffing), just trying to go at it from a different perspective.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • Does that make me a horrible person then, for taking my puppy to the pet store and lifting her up to the different varieties of rodents and birds and having her sniff the cages and such so she became familiar to the smells? =p

Um.....no. I wasn't saying they were horrible people, I was just saying that I was afraid the bunnies were gonna get really scared- I know someone who's guniea pig died because it was scared by a dog, both of my bunnies died unexpectedly, they may have been scared by an animal. I was only saying that it may not have been the best choice to allow dogs in there.

  • I could understand getting angry if the dog were doing more than sniffing- lunging, barking, etc. But sniffing shouldn't really bother smaller critters a ton, after all, they deal with a ton of people, and since they ARE in pet stores, they're probably used to sounds/smells of other animals.

  • Well yes, but like princesushi said, it could've done more than just sniffing. After all, the cages were open on the tops. Once again, I'm only saying it might not have been the best thing to do.

  • xD I do agree that people in pet stores can be stupid. I witnessed that first hand when I watched someone bring their setter mix to Petsmart- that thing was pulling on the leash to the point of gasping for air, while lunging at children and doing the whole high pitched whine that equates to overly excited, potentially aggressive states of mind. I watched as that dog tried to get at my puppy, then someone's kid, and then someone's three dogs (HUGE dogs at that. ._.) and then tried to get at someone's pit bull who ALSO did that high pitched nervous whine.
It was horrible.

But as long as the owners can control their animals, s'all good.

  • Yes, I also hate it when people bring their dogs to overcrowded fairs and events-some of the dogs get so nervous.
