Mommy Question :S

edited August 2010 in General Discussion
Is it normal to see bruising on the butt? I do not hit her on the bottom, or abuse my child but i noticed bruising around the face and bottom. I watch her, and don't notice her hurting herself in anyway. I took her to the doctor, and they said i was over-reacting. They don't seem to cause her pain. I'm for sure they are not birthmarks XD. If this has happened or if you know what might be causing this is would help. I have been in a huge panic and just want to wrap her in bubble wrap.

 • She's still spending a lot of time laying down and sleeping, which could produce slight bruising on her face, especially as she tries to "airplane" lifting head, hands and feet off the ground while laying on her belly. When her strength gives out, if she hits her face/chin just right or on some toy, it can cause a bruise. On her bottom... If she spends extended periods of time in a baby car seat/carrier or something similar (say more than 30 minutes, several times a day), she might get slight pressure bruising, especially if someone accidentally leaves a smaller toy or wrinkled blanket underneath her.

Babies have relatively thin skin and show what wouldn't be seen on adult more, so what we might see as a red spot that disappears after a few minutes, on a baby, it might look like a bruise. More often than not, especially at that age, with no way to really "shift" their weight to avoid pressure bruises, I'd hazard a guess that if the Doctors and nurses aren't worried about and you have no reason to suspect abuse from anyone in your family (I'm assuming that if you thought they might be abusive, you wouldn't leave her with them) that it really isn't anything out of the ordinary or anything to worry about and she'll outgrow it, replace it with new bruises in new places as she learns to crawl and pull herself up on things over the next few months.

She has a little "bouncy chair" I keep her in. Now that I think about it she spends at least 45minutes a day laughing in that chair. :D yay I hope this is it XD. I'll be monitoring the time, and change within the bruises. If not it may be the "superman" position :P.

 • I completely agree with Bama. Though I don't know much about babies, my mother is a nurse that works in a convalescent facility. Some of her patients are unable to really move around, so they spend a lot of time in bed or in a wheelchair. Sitting, or laying down a lot can cause bruising. My mother, as a nurse, always has to reassure family members of the patients that some amount of bruising is normal for their daily lifestyle. You've made your doctor aware of it, and he/she doesn't think it's serious, so try not to worry about it to much, but do keep an eye on it for sings of it getting worse.
