* Respectful Sigh*

We were on vacation and we were going to a baseball game. To get there you needed to get on the subway. So we headed down to the subway and rode it to our stop. When we got off there were a lot of people i looked around and saw the cutest dog, and so I wondered why the dog was in the subway. Taking a closer look I saw it was a service dog and its owner was blind. Many people stopped and petted the dog, even when the dogs cape said do NOT pet me I am working people still petted it. This bothers me so much because the dog is working and people should know not to pet it.

But if its a service dog, I usually just say to the owner, you have a beautiful dog. . . That is, if they're not busy. It brightens up the owner's day and I think when the owner is happy and knows that he has a beautiful dog, the dog become happier in a sense lol ^_^ I love commenting on people's dogs if I see them walking. However, I always ask if its alright to pet the dog before I get to close. . . Then I offer my hand for them to sniff me and get my scent and if they like me and are wagging their tail, I usually give them a good behind the ear scratchin XD
  • I hate it when people do that. Or when people let their children tackle other people's dogs without asking. Urgh.
I mean really.. manners... And watch your children. I don't want to get in trouble for my dog getting upset with your child because of your failure to watch the child. It's alright when the child asks and gently pets my dogs, but when a kid is in one of my dog's faces they aren't very happy. I wouldn't be happy with a stranger in my face either.

But yea seeing eye dogs have special training from birth to keep them seeing eye dogs. If someone does something dumb they could harm the dog's training and possibly the person it is servicing. It's extremely rude. I'd love to yell at those people who petted that dog XD

    Back in action?
  • Thats terrible, how is the dog supposed to work if it's being distracted by people? And yes, I always ask before petting a dog and let it sniff my hand, my parents taught me that when I was young and all parents should teach their kids how to behave around dogs. You never know how a dog is with people.

  • I've helped train service dogs and during their training you have to bring them EVERWHERE with you. They have a special training pack/vest they wear that says "Service Dog" and when you are in the store you get SWARMED by kids and adults who "just want to pet the puppy", here is a rough convo I had when this lady and her kids wanted to pet one of the dogs in training.

Lady: "AW! He's so cute!" -reaches down to pet him-
Me: "I ask that you not pet him, he is in training to be a service dog."
Lady's kids: "PUPPY!!!" -start petting him-
Me: -looks at lady- "Um..."
Lady: -watches her kids petting him, smiling-
Me: "Please don't pet him. He is in training."
Lady: "Come on kid's let's go!" -reaches down to pat dog on head before walking away-

o.O really now?!
This is what I do, and I agree that they always do seem happy to hear their dogs are pretty.
Exactly what I do everytime, even with horses and cats etc >.> People look at me stupid but it's more polite to the animal.. we don't appreciate having hands petting us unexpectentaly(sp?) now do we..

Every second week I catch the school bus to the train station so I can catch a connecting bus home and while standing waiting for the bus I people watch, there's not much else to do xD Anyway, there's at least one man with a guide dog whom I've seen walk by a couple of times and no-one bothers him, in fact they move politely out of the way which pleases me to see. But one time a group of rowdy teenage guys snuck up beside him and was making faces at him where he couldn't see and flicking the dog -.o Passer bys were evil-eyeing them and muttering but no-one did anything till they reached this cafe with workers out the front who yelled at the teens and pretty much chased them down the street. All this time the blind man had no idea what was going on and just kept walking..

Some people these days just don't have any respect. :|
