Same litter?

[<img src="http://i35.tinypic.com/kds8ps.jpg"; alt="http://i35.tinypic.com/kds8ps.jpg"; class="bb-image" />][/<img src="http://i38.tinypic.com/ta2fk4.jpg"; alt="http://i38.tinypic.com/ta2fk4.jpg"; class="bb-image" />]

Ok, so these two are from the same litter, Pookie is mine and Buddy belongs to my Grandmother. They are both Shih-Tzus. Pookie is basicly the breed's standard, IMPOSSIBLE to house train, flat faced, wavy fur (well, she has the puppy cut and the groomer didn't cut the fur evenly so it looks wirey), arrogant, 14 pounds. Buddy on the other hand is around 25 pounds, has straight, silky fur and has short fur around his face and on his legs, it looks like he has socks on, his paws are always turned outwards, his teeth are messed up we're having work done on them, I don't believe the paws and teeth have anything to do with this.. they're just defects but I thought I'd share since I am describing him and those are some of his most prominent features, and he has a "squirrel" tail, the fur on it is extremely poofy and it isn't anything like the rest of his fur. Buddy is so different I joke the breeders found him in the streets and decided to sell him as one of the litter.
[<img src="http://i36.tinypic.com/1jssxf.jpg"; alt="http://i36.tinypic.com/1jssxf.jpg"; class="bb-image" />][/<img src="http://i33.tinypic.com/29z5xzo.jpg"; alt="http://i33.tinypic.com/29z5xzo.jpg"; class="bb-image" />]
Also I forgot to mention Buddy sheds like crazy

  • My thought xD (I payed attention in biology toooo much)
maybe the mother had short hair and the father had long hair, which would give the puppies a 50/50 chance of getting short hair or long hair. Or if the parents both had short or long hair there would like a 1/5 chance that a puppy would be long or short haired. I hope this makes sense :3 and btw they are soo cute :]

  • I thought of that... But we saw the parents. Both long haired.

  • I'm going to be completely honest, and say Buddy looks like a pekingese or pekingese cross.
The turned out legs, "squirrel" tail, short facial hair, socks, etc sounds just like one, and the shape of his head and muzzle in the picture looks like it.
I've just never heard of a Shih Tzu with short facial hair. Does he have a long body, or short fat legs?
Here's some body shots of me purebred peke to compare. Do you have body shots of Buddy?
<a href="http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r26/PrinceSushi/Pets/FlowersandStuff-050.png"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Pic 1
<a href="http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r26/PrinceSushi/Pets/FlowersandStuff-051.png"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Pic 2

I'd joke with the breeders too...or I might seriously question them...

Whatever he may be, he's a pretty dog. Love his coloring.
Pookie is cute too. Reminds me of a Lhasa Apso I had.

  • Maybe the short haired gene was carried by both parents, but not seen. That would give the puppies a chance at getting the recessive, unshown gene (1/4 chance I believe?)
    2eldxsm.png
  • I <3 punette squares they are very handy with gene stuff but only when you know about the parents parents
    k1b98z.jpg
  • Hmm, I'll have to look for a body shot of Buddy.. if I can't find one on my computer I'll take one and download it.. We've considered a Peke but a serious Peke breeder that I met said Buddy looked nothing like a Peke, his muzzle was too long to be a Peke.... or even a mix
    FrostBite_zpsab645aba.png
  • Yeah.. They didn't have the parents parents on the premises...
    FrostBite_zpsab645aba.png
  • It is quite possible that there is more than one father to the litter. It's possible that the female got out one day and a different male got to her. That would explain why Buddy looks so different and is so much bigger.
  • Pardon this, but a "serious"(I'm assuming that's meant to imply a good) pekingese breeder wouldn't rule out the fact that crossing dogs could result in anything, including a dog that looks nothing like either parent. What were they judging him by? AKC standards? If you look up images of peke crosses, or just regular pet quality pekes, a lot of them have a longer muzzle(it's safer) like that. I myself have seen way more pekes with longer muzzles, than pekes with super flat faces(like the one I own).

For example, here is a Pekingese Pomeranian(Peke-a-Pom) cross, which has a far longer muzzle than Buddy appears to have.
Would the "serious" breeder say this wasn't a peke cross due to it's muzzle length?
<a href="http://www.shihtzuandfurbabyrescue.com/dogs/brinkley.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.shihtzuandfurbabyrescue.com/dogs/brinkley.jpg
Here is an image of an unknown pekingese cross. This is what most of the ones I've seen look like.
They often end up resembling Tibetan Spaniels, which are very very closely related to the Pekingese.
<a href="http://www.dfn.com/rhumane/dogs/Botox.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.dfn.com/rhumane/dogs/Botox.jpg
And here is a link to a page on Shinese(Pekingese and Shih Tzu crosses).
<a href="http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/shinese.htm"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/shinese.htm
When you look at the variations in Shinese, you could easily get a dog that looks like a Shih Tzu, a Pekingese, or something in between. Maybe the breeders thought they had 2 Shih Tzu, but in fact one, or both, were Shinese?

I found something interesting as well:
<a href="http://www.manchushihtzusociety.co.uk/pekingese_cross.htm"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.manchushihtzusociety.co.uk/pekingese_cross.htm;
It's an article that talks about pekingese being crossed into Shih Tzu in England.

  • I've talked everything over with the breeders... I thought the female got out one day too.. but they insisted she was kept in the house...
and yeah... I didn't believe the Peke breeder... she was a know it all.
anyway, I've taken more Buddy pictures and I'm going to put them up once I check my VP messages

  • I forgot to mention, Buddy sheds like mad
    FrostBite_zpsab645aba.png
  • Legs look like peke legs(including the shorter hair), but the hair texture does not look like a pekingese. I don't know exactly how similar Lhasa Apsos are to Shih Tzu, but that looks like the texture my Lhasa Apso had. However, it is just an image, and I can only speculate how it is in real life. The actual appearnce of the tail looks like a Shih Tzu.

My peke doesn't have bowed legs as extreme as Buddy. She has short hair on the front of her legs, and some massive feathering on the back the leggs; less on the hind legs, than the front legs. Are his legs short haired all the way around?

Pekingese feet
<a href="http://www.greatdogsite.com/admin/uploaded_files/1198061506pekingese.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Pic 1
<a href="http://images01.olx.com/ui/1/58/43/14075543_1.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Pic 2

Going from that last link I gave you in my prior post, I found more articles that talk about bow legs in Shih Tzus due to the introduction of pekingese into Shih Tzu lines.

As for the shedding, that both could be or could not be linked to pekingese. Mine does shed a lot. When she actual blows her winter coat, I can brush out enough hair to create a second peke with how furry she gets during winter. However, lots of long haired dogs can shed a lot. Is it an extreme amount compared to Pookie?

  • Yes.. well. His front legs have long hair on the backs of them and in the back legs its short all around.
Buddy's shedding is extreme compared to Pookie's.. Buddy's bed is covered in fur.. theres fur bunnies everywhere I look.. and he's only been at my house for 2 days! But Pookie.. Theres probably 10 hairs in her bed..

  • You get differences in the breeds sometimes, like mutations. I have one Shiba that has softer hair than my champion and it's also longer and thinner. She's also way taller. But it's just differences in the breed or mutations. I love genetics lol.
My other thought would be a different father by accident? I've heard of it happening sometimes with dogs, where breeders will breed two dogs and the female will get out and breed again with another dog, and that dog fathers only some of the puppies. It's odd.

    Back in action?
  • Anything is really possible with Buddy.... he's wicked cute. I guess I can settle on that. And the two are really cute together. I have some pics of them play fighting. Very cute
    FrostBite_zpsab645aba.png
  •
They often end up resembling Tibetan Spaniels, which are very very closely related to the Pekingese.

I was gonna say he looked like a Tibetan spaniel mix xD
