"See, they know who the momma is."

edited July 2010 in Vent
How can you say that the animals know that you are our mother? You are not taller than me by much, and unless you count yelling as a dominant animal behavior, I don't think the animals can tell your my mother. It's so unfair. Ever since I got my first kitten, that thing loved me to death he always fallowed me everywhere, now he barely acts like my cat. It's unfair because my mom makes me punish the animals, and give them discipline and they resent me for it. I love them and care for them, I play with them and keep them happy, I make them beds, buy them toys, and even make sure they only eat high quality food. But in the end, they just adore my mom. Because she has never yelled at them, that's my job.

"Chibi! Go get your cat of the table!!", so I do, and put him on the floor. "What? Your not going to say anything? Tell him 'bad', or something!", "No! He's gonna be angry at me! You do it!" "It's YOUR cat. You do it."

I've confronted her about it and told her that my cat won't sit by me or let me hold him now because I have to yell at him so much. I told her that it's because she makes me punish them. She just laughed, like I was joking or something. It's infuriating! Why can't I have a good relationship with MY ANIMAL just because you refuse to yell at them!?! She never wants to yell at them. She's so selfish, and she makes me so angry. Here's the kicker. The dogs I'm babysitting are not wanting to be by me anymore, because I have to tug their leashes and make sure they don't eat anything off the ground, because I have to prevent them from doing things that are dangerous. And then comes my mom, to walk them around in fun areas so they associate fun with my mom and whatnot. It's not fair at all. She makes me so angry.

"See, they know who the momma is". NO THEY DON'T, they just like you better because I AM the fun killer. It makes me so mad, you have no idea. It's just the amount of unfairness makes me rage.

 • I don't think disciplining them makes them like you less. 99% of the time, I am the one who disciplines my animals and if they have a choice of who to be with, they're usually next me.

Can the animals tell your mom is your mother, probably not in that way since animals, once beyond youth, stop relating to each other as family. I'd say it's more about your mother controlling the household overall. She's the one who tells you to do stuff and you do it, therefor, she is the one who gives orders and maintains order, even if it is you disciplining at them. She is first in command and you are second. It's always preferable to be on the good side of the commander.

Some people are just natural pet attractants, whether it be the human's personality or stability, or their exuberance. It may even be a way person smells or the quality time spent with them. And, just like humans, as animals get older, they find different things attractive. While a kitten or puppy may always want to follow a certain person around because they are fun and give them lots of attention, as they get older, they may find they don't want the constant attention, especially cats who tend to get more independent and find it more attractive to do what they want to do.

I'd suggest trying to thwart your mother, do training with the animals instead of discipline. The offer of treats for behaving just might make them turn back to you. If you can tell the cat to get down and they do and they get a treat for it, you don't have to physically move them or yell at them. Better yet would be that they learn they get treats if they don't even get up on the table and you don't have to tell them anything at all. Same thing with the dogs you're watching.

That actually made me laugh out loud! Thank you for the advice, that made me feel better. I actually have some extra birthday money left over and I think I am going to go out and buy some pet treats for the animals. Thank you! c:

 • Yelling at animals never results in a good outcome. Period.
Yelling can result in fear, which will make the animals avoid you.
It's better to use a stern voice, and simple words like "no" or "bad boy/girl."

I highly doubt animals could tell who your mother is. I also don't think they dislike you for disciplining them(unless your discipline methods are bad). I'm in charge of discipline with my animals, and they like me the most in my family. Why do they like me? Most likely because they spend a lot of time with me. Just work on playing with them more and rewarding them when they deserve it, but don't bribe them, or you'll just get spoiled puppies.

Cats...try not to think about cat behavior too much. It's so very confusing at times. Some cats are just moody in my opinion. One second they could love you, and the next they could be on the other side of the room giving you "don't touch me" glares. My female cat is definitely like that. Cats can change a lot too. I've raised kittens that were all cuddly, but once they grew up they didn't want to be held anymore.

I'm not doing anything aggressive, or physical punishment or something like that. I mostly do "NO", and do body blocking to move them from a place I don't want them (eg. Underneath the kitchen table, to avoid squirrels when walking, ect.) Maybe I'm just really paranoid. I just hate feeling rejected by an animal that I love so much. xD Cats are a whole 'nother story. I love my cats, but they seem so aloof. I thought male cats were suppose to be more affectionate.

 • I don't think you're necessarily doing anything wrong then.
With male cats it seems true. lol. All my male cats are affectionate(with me at least)...annoyingly so...even the tom cat I've been keeping an eye on/caring for is really affectionate towards people he's learned to trust. However, my grandmother's male cat can be a little like my female. If he wants attention then he'll let you pet him, but if he doesn't, then he's just going to avoid you like the plague. He's nicer than my female though, especially if he's used to you.

I've also been lucky enough to have some very affectionate females in the past.

 • Don't worry Chibs, Simba was mad at me for TWO WHOLE FREAKING WEEKS! And you know why? I was sick and my brothers dog was really warm so I let him sleep with me and Simba found him the next morning sleeping in the bed and he would not come in my room for two weeks because he HATES my brothers dog, but he finally warmed back up to me. He so selfish. >D I was so sad because he's my best friend. D: Eventually, they will get over it - you're the hand that feeds them, they will get over it. xD
