Horses and 4h

edited July 2010 in Vent
Well...I didn't get a horse for 4h this year because Mendi (my current barn owner) had all her horses taken, minus the two that she thinks I couldn't handle. :| Which I mean, I can understand if I wasn't, but there's a 9-11 year old boy on Superman now because she sold him so the boy would have a barrel pony. :\ I've gotten over that part though.
I was offered a horse by another member of the 4h so I could have a horse project and not have to do a horseless one.
But I can't use a horse other than one of Mendi's apparently, or it'd have to stay at her barn. And that wasn't possible, because last time a horse of Jamie's (friend that offered to let me use her mare) there were big issues.
Last year Jamie was in the 4h, she ended up bringing Titan, her gelding, up to Mendi's barn because Mendi told her the same thing she told me. Jamie had to have her 4h horse there. Titan ended up getting a..boo boo while he was there. Jamie went off on Mendi (because it was a very avoidable injury) and they got in this big fight. Jamie ended up taking Titan back down to her grandparent's barn with the rest of her horses. Jamie's the only member of 4h with a horse project, that doesn't have a horse in Mendi's barn.

Now, I'm confused as to why Thunder (horse I was offered to free lease) would have had to be boarded at Mendi's barn in order for me to have a horse project for 4h. I just don't see the reason the horse needs to be at her barn for me to use it for my project.. :\
Next thing-Jamie offered to let me ride Thunder in the show on saturday, since I'm horseless and it's an open show-not a 4h one.
I would be estatic if I do, since I'll be on a horse that's already done it all (unlike Dude, who's still a problem horse. :| ) and it'll be my first show actually riding. I'm probably going to ride Thunder tomorrow, to see if I like her and I can ride her good.
I'm a bit tentative of how Mendi will react to that though... :\ Both Jamie and I think that she'll probably get a bit upset..but I don't understand why she should. ;; I mean, Jamie offered to let me ride Thunder; I didn't hear Mendi offering to let me ride Dude in the show.

I love that Mendi lets me ride for free in turn with helping out around with the barn (which I enjoy), but there's quite a few things I would like changed..since they're not what I want to have the possibility to be influenced by. I'm really grateful that I don't have to pay to gain all the experience I've gotten and things I've learned, dont' get me wrong, but there's a lot of things I don't agree with as well.
I don't want to really leave the barn, but I'd like to be able to have influence by better horse(wo)men as well.

Mendi isn't doing 4h next year, so I'll probably going off to another 4h group, or just going to the open shows if Jamie is still willing to let me use Thunder. I'm just tentative to join another one next year, because I'm not sure how I'll get to the meetings, coz this one was closest. :|

So...if yu read all that-cookies to you. :p

  • This is a made up rule by Mendi, and is totaly wrong if you ask me. Yes it is easier to have every one at the barn but is not a rule or anything and should not be a requirement as that is not really fair. My 4-H group only 2 of us are at the same barn as are leader the other three are at different barns ( at one point in time we were all at the same barn but we all moved to different barns due to problems with the barn owner0. Honestly I would find some where else to go, a different 4-H group to join. There are MANY people that own barns that are willing to come elt some one ride/lease a horse in exchange for work. Anyways good luck and I hope something works out with you. I love 4-H but also find that in the horse part of 4-H it is way to dramtic.
  • Thanks, Kit.
I realized it was a made up rule, and most likely just for money.
The reason I was rather surprised by Jamie's offer was that it wouldn't cost me any money that I didn't have.
I'm most likely going to go to another 4h group, and if I don't I'll still probably just go to the open shows if I can get a horse and a ride there.
I've actually been contemplating sending a letter to the the people I've seen with horses just sitting in their field asking if I could work for them, and be allowed to ride in exchange.
It is dramatic. o.o;
Hayley and Vicki were talking about Jamie saying about how her horse is slow, she rides funny, she's not skinny, etc etc. Like excuse you. >.>
And Chey doesn't like Mendi because she doesn't like how she handles/treats/etc her horses etcetera. But she can't move yet. *sigh*
I hate all the drama. ;; I prefer to be drama free. D:

  • I had such a bad experience in 4-H when I was in it.
My leader would yell at me all the time for missing meetings (Which I didn't miss many..) because I couldn't make it since my parents were getting divorced and I had to watch my 11 and 3 year old sisters.
Mine was dog 4-H though.
And I hate to say this but I knew more about dogs than any of the other people in the club, and was the only one to get 100% on the dog breed and health test at fair..
But oh well that's over.
I quit that and now I work for a professional dog show handler who says I have great potential. I also got a champion Shiba after all this. Lol

  • Oh and also the leader's son was only at about half the meetings. He missed WAY more than me and the leader yelled at me for it.

  • I think I remember my sister being in a program like that while in high school(was a different name I think, but same idea), but she quit, because it was ridiculous how the people that ran it acted. Back then my family basically only bought, sold, and participated in rodeo(mostly barrel racing), so it was no loss to her like it is to you. I hope you're able to find a new group, or at least some way to be around horses. They are great animals, it's just unfortunate that drama can sometimes follow them.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.

  • Maybe, that definitely sounds more like than 4H.
