Guinea Pig Question

I've been thinking about buying a guinea pig. My friend had one she kept in one of those big storage bin things with no top on and it was fine- I was wondering if they could jump outta there? I could buy a cage but I'd rather do something homemade to save money. I also know from having rabbits that wood would get chewed really bad so that's not an option for me, would they chew up plastic?

  • I've had guinea pigs and I wouldn't suggest putting them in a plastic storage bin, heat and ammonia can build up with such plastic walls. Also if your looking to save money, you can find cheap cages on your local craigslist or classifieds. The only thing I used a storage bin for is to put the guinea pig in when I was changing the cage, it makes it easier so you dont have to chase them around to put them back in xD and yes they do chew plastic.

  • All rodents chew and they will chew anything they can get their teeth on. Mostly because their teeth never stop growing, so they have to chew to keep them worn down. Guinea pigs aren't known jumpers or really climbers, however, I also wouldn't suggest a plastic bin to keep them in. Because if they do start chewing it, they could be loose before you know it and plastic isn't digestible, so if they eat some of it, it could cause serious problems.

  • Thank you, I will find a cage to buy.
