My parents took my chihuahua on a walk yesterday since I was on vacation. The temperture was about 100 degree's and high humidity, all 3 of our dogs on a walk. The littlest dog a chihuahua named Bean. Bean was walking around a small lake by our house and almost died. She came up to a water fountain and dropped. She landed on her side and her tongue came out of her mouth and her eyes rolled back in her head. She stayed down for afew minutes. My parents rushed her back to our house. They squirted Bean with the hose and she woke up and started shivering uncontrolby. They wrapped her up in a blanket and gave her gatorade and lots of water. 2 Hours later she woke up and was pretty normal. My parents called a few minutes ago and told me this and they were afraid to call me and tell me. What do I do Now? Anything I can give her to make sure this dosent happen again??????

 • Tell your parents that if it ever happens again they need to take her to an emergency vet. Sounds like she had a heat stroke, which is life threatening. One hot days it's really important to keep your dog hydrated. Always carry a water bottle(for you and your dog) on walks. If possible, schedule permitting that is, try to walk in the morning or evening when it's not too hot. High humidity only makes it worse, so really avoid walks during the hottest time of the day while it's humid.

For now I'd highly suggest having your regular vet check her out to make sure she is hydrated, and that what happened was indeed caused by heat stroke instead of some kind of underlying problem.

 • Yeah thats what my parents thought to but its expensive to go to the vet I told my parents if she really must walk take her in her stroller with a bowl of water in it

 • Expensive or not, if it happens again it could kill her. It's very important to keep emergency funds set aside for your pets.

Sushi is right. The chihuahua needs to be taken to the vet to have her checked. I have a chihuahua as well, and we don't let her stay out in the heat for more than 10 minutes.

Also, how much does your chihuahua weigh? Sometimes that has to do with it. The lady that bred the chihuahua I have, keeps hers outside in kennels all day where they run around in the sun and heat just fine. She keeps a shady area for them to rest and she refills the water every hour or so.. Maybe your Chihuahua is getting to hot cause of weight? That happens to my friends chihuahua lol

What I don't get bout this certain post though (the one i quoted).. If you are taking the dog for a walk.. Why put her in a stroller with water..? Isn't that defeating the purpose of taking her for a "walk"? She could sit in a shady area with water in the house just as easy 0.0
Probably to get her out of the house. I think a walk is just as mentally stimulating as it is physically. One of my poms seems to really like staring out the window when I've let him sit in my lap(I wasn't driving of course). I imagine a stroller would be like that.
