Neutering a Rat..

edited July 2010 in General Discussion
I've decided to get my Tar neutered. Bleach and the new babies get along perfectly, but Tar and the babies get in fights constantly. So, it's $57 to neuter him.. why not?
Anyone else ever gotten a rat/rodent neutered? Any tips? I'm kinda nervous. His scheduled appointment is next Friday, since I'll be out of town tomorrow and this weekend.
He'll be the first rat our vet's ever neutered, but she's done surgeries on rats before. I trust her completely, she's a family friend.
If anyone has any success stories or tips, I'd greatly appreciate it. :]

  • I was going to have one of my rats(that I used to own) neutered, but when I went to an AFRMA show and asked them about it, they said to avoid doing it except for medical reasons since it can be dangerous. I opted out of getting a second rat(which was why I considered neutering), because I wasn't going to risk it if they thought it was that dangerous(not to mention I didn't know the vets out here, at that time). I think it's great that someone you trust is doing it, and I sincerely hope there are zero complications.

Since I've never had a rat neutered, I guess I'll just throw out the obvious tips. Keep him separated, don't let him run around too much, try to keep him on a single leveled cage(like a glass aquarium), support his whole body when moving him, don't get him wet until he heals, and check the area for signs of infection 1-2 times a day.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • I'd never neuter such a small animal just because usually it get riskier as the size decreases.
I understand cats and dogs, but for small animals I just see it as too much of a risk and unnecessary stress on the animal.
I've never had rats before so my knowledge is limited, but are you sure neutering will definitely stop them from fighting?

I personally would rather spend the 57$ on getting another cage and stuff and separating them, rather than neutering in case it didn't work in stopping them fighting. In which case you would have spent 57$, which is quite lot, on nothing and would have to go spend however much on top of that to buy and new cage for separation.
