2 rants

edited July 2010 in Vent
Yesterday, was the 4th of July. Well, the big fireworks go off at about 9:00 here. I went outside at 8:40 to get my cats inside the garage, so that I could then put my dogs in as well. When I went outside one of my cats was completely scared because the new neighbors across the street had all of their kids(I'm assuming they were all related in some way) playing in the middle of the cul-de-sac. They were screaming, running around, and playing with the tiny legal firecracker, popper things. I had to spend about a minute or two running across my drive way and yard to catch my cat. Of course, not even the adult cared to calm them down or stop the firecracker things for a second while I HELD the cat. They started screaming really loud, and running around, which freaked him out, so he turned to try to get away and his paw hit my cheek. I now have 2 puncture marks and a scratch on my cheek.

They all saw me, including the adult, so it really makes me mad that he couldn't have distracted them for that tiny amount of time while I was holding the cat. I've had door-to-door sales/pitch men, which are normally rude, stand at the end of my driveway, and request I come over because I was holding or sitting with a cat at the time. I know it was a holiday, and that I shouldn't be too harsh, but in the end I'm the one that's going to have scars on my face. This really couldn't have happened at a worse time. I've been spending the last 2-3 weeks working on getting my skin to look good, enough to get compliments, and now that I finally have it there, I'm rewarded with wounds.

On to my second rant. I really can't stand when people use illegal fireworks. Come on, we live in fire country!!!! There was a huge fire at the horse ranch down the street, just a week ago! Using illegal fireworks doesn't just put the user at risk, it puts everyone in the area at risk. For your safety, and the safety of others, follow the law!

 • I know how you feel about the cat thing.. These little kids at the river close to the house i was at were screaming and throwing rocks into the water and stuff. When I picked up the cat to take him inside he clawed my neck and hand. My hand now has a scar on it and my neck still as a slight cut..
 • My cats stay inside which is good for us. People on my street have been setting stuff off every single night for the past 2wks or so (except for nights were there are storms).

There were about 3-4 houses shooting off major fireworks. Its illegal here in our state to shoot off fireworks.

I actually enjoy them because I dont go to the city displays. So far we've had no problems with fires. People are pretty safe with them.

I can see how you'd be upset over it though. They are illegal for a reason. Its only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.

 • Everyone here goes across the border to buy fireworks in SC, because North Carolina doesn't allow the big ones that explode in the sky. I don't have an issue with sober people using them, though.

 • The people here go down into Mexico and Baja to buy them, or they get them off people that bought them from Mexico or Baja.

Pretty much everything is illegal here except teeny tiny things. I've only ever used sparklers. The kids that were playing in the cul-de-sac had those little things you throw on the ground, and then they make a pop and spark(I think they are legal, but I'm not even sure). I think all rockets are prohibited, but I see them coming out of backyards every year. The ones that really ticked me off this year where WAY too big for a normal person to have. They shot like half a dozen of them somewhere in my housing track, and it was driving my dogs insane at 11:30 at night. All the noise laws and what not still apply in residential areas on holidays, so it really ticked me off.

Sober, drunk, I don't care who is using them if they are illegal.. Even the professionals manage to light things on fire every year. When we would watch them at my grandmothers, they lit the mountain on fire every year. We used to jokingly bet how long into the show it would take.

 • The cherry things? They're little, and you throw them down, and they crack? Those should be legal, since you can't exactly do anything with them. Except they hurt if you drop them on your foot x: My brother popped one on my foot a while back.

 • I'm so glad fireworks are legal here.
I mean I can see where people set them off illegally, but I guess I see the point of doing it because they are legal here and I've been raised around them, being able to set them off every year.
My neighbors have a battle each year that consists of literally thousands of dollars worth of fireworks.
Last year one guy spent $4,000 and the other around $3,000. PLUS they each had friends that came and spent at least a couple hundred EACH.
So we get a pretty good show every year, I enjoy it. =D
