Horses?

edited July 2010 in General Discussion
I want to get a horse. I have tons of chickens, emus, rabbits, ferrets, dogs, and I want a horse. I have all day, after all the others are taken care of, and lots of room. We have a shelter and field not in use. I have taken riding lssons for years. How much, you think, a horse costs a year to care for? If I have lots of time to spend with him/her, will I still need two?

(Im interesting in a smallish pony.. not a mini or large horse)

Thanks

  • I have a horse i have to pay rent because i dont own a yard but if you grow your own hay you will be good all year, But if you leave you horse/pony out all the time i would suggest Museling the horse/pony but you wont have to feed the pony if your grazing it all the time. My pony comes in overnight and he has some mix food and hay :)

  • Costs vary by the areas you live in. Call around to your vets and your feed places to check prices on normal stuff like yearly checkups/shots and monthly wormers, grain, and call around to local ferriers as your horse will at least need to be trimmed on a regular basis.

Where you live will determine how much hay you need to buy in the winter. It also depends on how large your field is. Horses generally do better in pairs since they are herd animals.

Also need to make sure you have money put aside for emergencies. Horses can easily rack up hundreds of dollars in vet bills on something that isn't life threatening.

  • Horses are very expensive and I suggest looking around ALOT on prices of things before buying a horse.

I have 3 of my own horses and all my money goes towards them. I spend roughly $250 a month on all of them. Im in a good place right now and have my own place to keep my horses, and we grow are own hay. I also work off my lessons, hauling to shows exc. I also get a huge discount on alot of horse things.

For One horse your looking to spend any where between $200-$600 a month depending on board, hay, vitemans, grain, farrier, worming exc.

The cheapest Part of owning a horse is Buying the Horse!
  • I grew up with horses. My father bought, sold, transported, broke, trained, and put shoes on all kinds of equids. From what I can remember, they were VERY expensive to keep; hundreds a month per horse(and he got lots of deals). When you factor in everything that goes into owning a horse such as food, fencing, saddles, bridles, blankets, troughs, shoes, and so on, you can easily rack up thousands(in general, not per month).
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
