not losing weight :[

edited July 2010 in Vent
Okay it has just been killing how i am not losing any weight. Im not a skinny girl being stupid and saying 'omg im so fat, i need to lose weight'. I dont weigh over 200 lbs but i want to lose weight. My boyfriend tells me I dont need to but I know he is just saying that because I would kill him if he said otherwise.

Anyway, I cannot figure out why Im not losing weight. When August rolls around, I will have been a vegetarian for three years. Usually such a drastic change in diet would have caused at least a 5-10 pound weight loss, right? I think I might have lost 1 or 2 pounds in the first month or so and then nothing else. I dont want people think that I became a vegetarian to lose weight, because I didnt. Three years ago, I liked the way I looked. But I thought losing weight would just be a bonus. Wrong.

Secondly, I kicked the soda habit about 4 months ago. I only drink water and 2% milk. Once every few months I might sneak in the occasional lemonade. Thats it. Also, the only chips I eat are Sun Chips. And thats once a month, maybe. Ice cream, also a once a month thing.

I dont excercise everyday, but the past few days Ive been trying to. But dont you think just changing what I eat should help a little? Shouldnt I see some kind of change from eliminating the things above? It just seems so unfair how you hear about people who lost 15 pounds just from not drinking soda and I havent lost that much with all my cuts combined. It drives me insane.

I dont know how much "advice" could be given on this, but if you can, I'd be more than glad to hear it. Anybody else going through this awfulness?

- Secret :/

  • Well, first off, I'm sure your boyfriend will love you no matter how you look. Maybe just exercise more? I started eating just once a day (usually around 3 in the afternoon) and started walking more and being outside doing more in general and I've been losing 5 pounds every week or two.

That's really bad for your metabolism. You're seriously lucky you're losing that weight. Be careful.

Eat three meals a day with small, healthy snacks in between. Get good exercise with tons of cardio. Drink tons of water, which'll help you out a bit. Maybe start running? Soccer? Baseball? Touch football? I lost weight swimming laps, and joining a swim team. If you're part of a YMCA, they offer Zumba classes and yoga, etc, and you can use the exercise equipment. They have a lot of stuff.
I know this because my mom like forces me to run /= I hate it with every fiber in my being.

This is actually a bit scary to me, only eating once a day. Your body is running on no energy for most of the day, burning not just fat, but muscle to keep going. To me, that's not healthy weight loss. But I agree with the exercise and boyfriend still loving you. Men have more tolerance for extra weight than women do in general.

As for being a vegetarian, what foods are you eating? And how much? If you're eating a lot of breads and pasta, the weight loss won't be there as much as if you were eating mostly fruits and vegetables. It may also be that you have lower metabolism than others, meaning your body doesn't burn energy as fast.

Don't get hung up on a number. You may actually look better at a heavier weight, if that weight is muscle. I know I looked and felt better at about 140lbs than I do now at about 105, because I was fresh out of boot camp and the weight I had was mostly muscle. So if you aren't happy with how you look, figure out why. If it's just a small amount of fat or flab you're wanting to lose, trying taking a brisk walk around the neighborhood or running in place for short periods of time throughout the day. Doesn't need to be much, especially if you aren't very active now. Just enough to get your heart rate up for a few minutes each day.

If you are eating healthy, but not exercising, there's nothing for the body to use the calories on, so it stores them as fat.
I've tried the whole not eating thing. did it for about two weeks and I started blacking out. eventually my hair began to fall out because of it. so I'm not going there again.

I walk and have began to run a little. there are no summer teams around here so sports are out of the question. we used to have a YMCA membership but we couldn't afford it anymore, so I can't go there...

I like my curves, I'd just like to lose some weight. I know its not going to fall off, but my goal is to lose 20 pounds. If that takes a year, so be it, I just need it to happen.

  • Yea I know you guys are right. Joey made me eat more in the past four months but after I got in my wreck last Tuesday I've been having so much guilt over Perla breaking her arm that I just have no desire to eat anymore.. lol Joey fusses at me and tries to make me eat with him when hes over but I just pick at it till hes done then give my brother the rest of my food.. but! I'm eating grapes as I type this! yummy =D
  • I'm currently in the process of loosing weight, or at least maintaining my current weight by modifying my diet. More than anything I just want to be healthier and tone up a bit(I seriously have very little muscle), and like you I'm in no hurry.

Being a vegetarian has nothing to do with loosing weight. Some vegetables just aren't as healthy as other. Corn for example, can be very fattening if you eat too much of it. Actually, I’m sure a lot of vegetables can be very fattening in certain quantities.

This is what I recommend/do:
1.Monitor your daily calorie intake based on your BMR.
2.Exercise! 10-15 minutes of cardio, and 10-15 minutes of muscle building exercises like crunches or squats 1-3 times a day, and 3-5 times a week.
3.Stretch and exercise (even if it’s just a few jumping jacks) when you wake up.
4.Eat a good breakfast, and then as the day goes on make your meals smaller.
5.Eat at least 3 meals a day with snacks in between. Muscle weighs more, but it also burn more fat.
7.Eat foods that naturally boost your metabolism. I personally like(I only listed the vegetarian friendly ones):
Green Tea
Low-fat Yogurt
Beans
Oat Meal
Apples
Celery
Carrots
Cucumbers
There are a lot more out there, so do research to find ones you like.
8. I know it's kind of mentioned above, but drink tea! Green tea is especially good for you.
9. Treat yourself once a week to something such as a candy bar, small bowel of ice cream, a meal at a restaurant, whatever it is you like. If you're on a diet, and you're not treating yourself to something once in awhile, then you're more likely to give up on the diet.
10. When you're not drinking tea, you should drink lots and lots of water. Your body functions better when well hydrated(something I actually have a problem doing)
11. Kind of goes with the above, severely limit your intake of junk food and sugar.

I'm no expert. The above is just what I've learned or do. I'd suggest doing lots of research on safe/healthy techniques, healthy foods, and exercise techniques. Not everyone responds the same, so you will have to play around to find things that work for you.

I really wish you good luck!

  • I have such a hard time losing weight! I can gain like 5 pounds from one meal, and then it takes me like 2 months to work it off. Recently I have stopped eating such fattening foods so often. So instead of getting ice cream out of the fridge Ill eat some of my yogurt, which actually tastes better. Keep in mind how much fat and stuff youre taking in throughout your day so you dont eat too much. Also, eat lots of snacks. But make sure theyre healthy. I also starting working out again. For awhile I was so devastated I just stopped. But now I alternate walking and running each day, and I alternate on working my arm and leg muscles each day. And I do crunches each day. So its like on Monday Ill walk and work on my arms and do crunches, then on Tuesday Ill run, work on my legs, and do crunches. Just keep at it! Seems like everyones trying to loose 20 pounds, cause I am too! Lol maybe Vp should have a weight loss support group. Good luck!

And on a side note, if youre really trying hard and its not working, talk to your doctor. You could have a thyroid(sp?) or other medical problem

  • thanks for all the tips everyone!

I just got back from walking/running. • I'm trying to loose weight too, especially around me stomache area. When I was little I was skinny, then my grandma fed me fattening foods so I got a little on the chubby side... not fat so to say but very very very chubby. I was (and I don't mind sharing these things, haha) but I was 155 lbs from the age of 10-14. I go to an all girls school, so I started noticing my weight more, because all of the girls that are there are skinny, and I knew I wasn't. So, I started eating smaller portions and not letting my self get "full" with food. I also stopped drinking sodas, all together. period. I saw results very quickly. I lost 20 lbs from doing this. I also started exercising more, but that was later after I lost the 20lbs.

But yeah, I don't understand your change in diet thing. Cause I did practically the same thing, (except i'm not a vegetarian o.o). Because if you stop drinking soda all together it should show in your diet. :/

But yeah, i'm still trying to loose weight, around my tummy area so I can have rock hard abs xP Haha, but my goal is to look good in a bikini, I think I absolutely look horrible in one, so I have to wear tankinis >.> I absolutely hate it. Girls at my school are always like, "I need to loose weight" when they are either naturally skinny or they are tall, have muscle, and very lean.

If you are willing to exercise, I recommend swimming (laps, that is). :) That's what i'm doing now and I love it. It works all of your body and especially your abs. I love it because my abs, under all my flabby skin, are tight from that workout. Also, swimming doesn't put any strain on your body.

Anyways, I wish you the best of luck for your weight loss! There's gotta be something out there that can help you. :)

  • I forgot to add that along with swimming, do crunches, and squats. :D

  • Have you tried eating smaller meals but eating more often?
I do that naturally. I get filled quickly, but I'm hungry 20 minutes later. XD
I could be filled to the brim at a restaurant and when I get home 5 minutes later, I finish my food because I'm starving again.

That's supposed to be really good for your metabolism though. You're still eating the same amount, but less at once. On a good day, such as a day we go grocery shopping, I'll eat maybe 10 times a day. I skip breakfast since I normally sleep past that time. And then I go crazy from there. XD
Now, with not much food in the house I'll eat 5-6 times a day.

When I exercised while doing this I stayed around 105-110. When I stopped exercising I shot up 5 pounds and am around 110-115 now.
Not a bad weight. I got out of being underweight at least. XD But I've always been at a low weight for my age, regardless of how much I eat. (:
I wish I could go swimming because I love it, but we dont have a pool and the only pool around here it costs like 8 dollars to get in. Dont even feel healthier. The unfairness of it all! :[

  • Not eating is the worst you can do for weight loss. Eventually your body will produce more fat to feed on itself. I know it sounds gross, so why do it right?

Don't be too surprised if you actually start to gain weight after a while. When doing a lot of working out you will start to build more muscle which weighs more than fat. I'm not saying that you are working out to become a muscle woman/man, but it does happen. Don't check your weight often, it's bad for motivation to do anything. Check your weight in the morning at the same time once a week. Make it part of your routine. =)

I've been having a problem with weight loss too. I have a wedding dress to fit into. I do have a year and 11 days until the big day, but I've got the weight problem from my family. I eat healthy and only have a treat like once a month, but I have a lack of motivation. Hopefully with my new puppy I will be getting out more. =)
  • Maybe it's your metabolism? I know everyone's is different. Myself, I don't eat all that much, but what I did eat was sugar and fat and that resulted in a bit of a tummy. But in the past few months I've curved my diet by actually looking at the calorie content on the boxes. xDD

I think I've basically lost a decent amount of weight by cutting out snacking. That's what I did. I can't give up soda, but I think it would help weight loss if I did...I also have been going on walks. You don't need to become a massive body builder or run 5k, but a daily walk is very helpful and it makes you feel good. Also get a good night's sleep. That helps your body. And water, water is great for your body (and not to mention completion!)

Just whatever you do, always lose weight in a healthy way. c:

I started working out again yesterday and am having a hard time getting back into it. Grrrr. But even so, ive been movin movin trying to make up for it, and ive been keeping up the diet so heres hoping i start to see some results.

  • Even if you cant work out, make sure you stay on your diet. I weighed myself before I went to the lake and had lost 3 pounds, I went off my diet for the three days I was there, eating more than I had been, and gained 2 of those pounds back. Good luck sticking too it!

  • If you feel hungry and want a snack drink a glass of water it fills you up without giving you the calories of a snack. Drinking water everyday is known to speed up your metabolism.
