Dog Food

Does anyone know a good brand of dog food for dogs that are beginning to age? Prince's age is beginning to show(he must be 8-10 years old by now), so I'd like him to loose the extra weight he's packed on in the last 2 years. I want him to be healthier so that he can be happier as he gets older.

About Prince:
He's a pom. Probably 8 or 10 by now. He's not anywhere near the Pomeranian standard of 3-7 pounds. A healthy weight for him would probably be around 15 pounds, if not a little more. He probably needs to loose between 5-10 pounds(I might be over estimating).

What I'm looking for:
Targeted towards older/aging dogs
Helps them loose weight
Something cheap or mid range in price. (I can't afford $40 a bag)

 • Uh.
I'm pretty sure you can buy any weight-loss food.
Purina & Hill's are pretty good brands. And they're not overly expensive.

Aging dogs dont really need specialized food.
You can still use regular food for them.
+ smaller dogs last about 15yrs, so 8 isnt that bad. :)
I just suggest maybe feeding him some glucosamine tablets? I dunno, Im usually around bigger dogs who have joint problems. lol :)

Fish Oil pills are also helpful. :)
Helps keep his skin and coat healthy

 • Does Purina have specialized weight loss foods? We tried the regular Purina for a few weeks and we saw no difference from their favorite brand Kibbles 'n Bits, which is why we just went back to Kibbles 'n Bits.

I remember when my grandmother had an older Doberman. The vet said that older dogs have slower metabolisms, and so they need to be on senior dog food to keep them at a healthy weight, and something about extra vitamins being in the food(I can't remember the other reasons since it was so long ago). That's why I'm thinking about food for older dogs. We also don't know if he's 8 since we adopted him from a shelter. He could have been as old as 5 when we got him, or as young as 2. He is beginning to get an old dog face though. You can really see it in his eyes.

The good thing is he's still very active but seems to tire faster, and he has no joint problems that we can tell.

I guess I'll just stick him on a diet food like you recommend. Once he's at a healthy weight it will be a lot easier to tell if the slowing down is because he's fat, or if it's because he's getting older.

Thanks.
