Dog Troubles

edited July 2010 in Vent
I've got a 1 year old, female Cocker Spaniel/Shih-Tzu/Poodle mix. She's jailed in her kennel while we're out of the house otherwise she'll pee/poo all over the house or chew up paper or any garbage she can get to. She has plenty of toys to keep herself busy, but she doesn't.

Any ideas on the potty training thing? While we're home, our older dog always whines at the door if he wants out. Sayge just kind of follows him around and goes out at the same time, otherwise we would never know when she wants to go out. My grandpa lives on an attached suite thing on our house, so he lets her outside to use the bathroom ALL DAY, but if we're not home, she'll still pee/poo all over the floors. |:

As for the chewing, I'm hoping to buy lots of tasty chewies. Bones, interesting toys, etc. But I still don't know if it'll distract her from paper and such. She normally gets garbage out of the little 1 foot garbage can in my room, where I have paper from art and stuff in it. I've learned to close my door, but she STILL finds paper SOMEWHERE. o_o Any ideas on this?

I'd really like to not have her cooped up in her kennel all day, it's not fair in my opinion. D:

  • For the garbage situation they have this thing that you can put on the garbage (has a cover) that if they put their head in it it makes like a beep noise that some dogs do not like and teaches them not to do it. Not sure I this helps :)

  • Newspaper training. Train your dog to poop/pee on newspaper. While your gone she might try and do that for a change

  • To keep her busy you just have to find something she likes. I personally give my dogs rawhide that can keep them distracted for hours when I need them to be quite or calm down. I also recommend these: <a href="http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3884285&lmdn=Dog"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Plubber Dog Toys. My dog Prince loves soft toys, but we can't give him them because he rips them to pieces in under an hour; he's a shredder. However, we bought the raccoon plubber toy a week ago and it's still looks like a toy. He ripped the ears off, but the rest of the toy is still plush. I'd suggest a treat dispensing one as well. Those can keep some dogs distracted for a looong time.

I wouldn't let her run around the house if no one is home to keep an eye on her. All kind of things can go wrong when a dog is left along in a house. They can eat things that could be dangerous, and they could cause all kind of damage. I remember watching Emergency Vets years ago on Animal Planet, and it always seemed like a lot of cases were dogs eating things while the owner wasn't looking/home. Keeping her in a kennel, backyard, or crate are the best options when you can't watch her.

Keeping her in her kennel isn't cruel as long as you're taking her out to get some exercise and social interaction everyday. Kenneling her is really not that much different than allowing her to have full range of your house, except that a kennel is smaller and safer. Just make sure she has shade, water, toys, and somewhere to lay down(a house or bed), and she should be perfectly fine until you get home. If your worried about the heat or weather you could get a playen or a baby gate(to lock her in one room) so her range is restricted. If she has to be penned inside the house, I'd suggest some type of potty tray/pan since she shreds up papery things. Potty trays/pans use all kinds of materials. Some are litter, and some are pads(which might work for her if you can secure them down).

I've heard good things about <a href="http://www.wizdog.com/"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">Wizdog indoor potty. I don't know how well it works(I've not tried it), but it might be what you are looking for. I like that it seems really easy to clean, and keeps them from getting pee on their paws as they go. I've been considering buying it for when I have to keep my dogs inside all day(because it's cold or raining for example) because Prince occasionally shreds puppy pads.

As for the garbage, that's more something you have to work on than her. It is important that she learns not to get in the trash, but it's just as important that you try to prevent the problem. Close doors where she doesn't need to be, pick up and paper/trash laying around, and make sure all the cans in her area have lids or locks on them. One thing I've learn with my pom is that no matter what I put in front of him, could be a whole oven roasted chicken, if he sees a tissue he's going to shred it first and then enjoy his treat.

Good luck.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • If your getting a playpen make sure the spaces between the different pannels is small enough so her paw of naill dosent get stuck in it. Happend to my dog two days ago our golden got his nail stuck in the the top he was howling and *screaming*

  • Watch It's Me Or The Dog! I've learned a lot. =D
  • Either::

Take the dog for more walks before you leave,

Or

For a little while, get someone to hide where the dog won't notice at all.. (if possible use a hidden camera to see what the dog does) and get that person to make noises whenever the dog does something unwanted.
