Am I the only one?

edited June 2010 in General Discussion
Am I the only player on VP that refuses "Sponcer" or "Sponser" services?
I know it is a game...
and largely a game with younger kids...
but I figure if you pay money for a Sponsor kennel, you would at least advertise yourself properly as such!

 • VP needs a spellcheck option. However, I do find that most of the trolls I've encountered over the past two or three years didn't have much in the way of spelling or grammar. I suppose I just feel bad for some of the people who don't put the effort in for spelling/grammar because they might be mislabeled. I am personally turned off by services by those who can't spell said services correctly. Net/Chat/Text speech is a bit annoying too. I just figure if a player cared enough to buy a sponsor account, they would care enough to spell it correctly.

But like I said, I understand it is a game, and largely a game with younger kids. So I don't mind so much. VP is definitely one of the better sim games I've come across.
 • Like you said younger kids play, too. But they may actually put effort into it. They may accidently spell things wrong. It means nothing. They put the same amount of effort as you do!

 • Not to mention, some people here are from other countries and their English probably isn't the best.
I agree.
I've bought from actual stores that have spelled stuff wrong. They may even know how to spell the misspelled word(s), but didn't catch it when they first wrong/typed it. It doesn't mean their service is of poor quality. In college(well, mine at least) they tell students to print out essays in order to spell-check them, because people are more likely to overlook spelling errors on the computer. Same with important letters, and documents like resumes. I don't know if it is true, but it from my experiences it seems like it is.

I'm sure some people also do think it's the correct spelling. Most likely they've never been corrected. I pronounced "our" as "ar/are" until I was about 16, because no one had ever told me that was wrong. I would find it pretty silly if I ever learned someone didn't want to talk to me because I was innocently saying something improperly.

I also agree with this.

I think the best thing would be to politely let them know they have a spelling error, and try not to think too much into it. You could be turning away a lot of good people because of a silly mistake/misunderstanding.

 • I agree that these are all extremely good points. Many misunderstandings do occur, though, particularly when trollers are more commonly the players with numerous spelling errors(kudos to VP for being one of the few sim games that crack down on trollers). I would be more than happy if VP some how came up with a spell check we could use so that said misunderstandings could be avoided. I won't deny I've had my share of spelling typos! It is also possible that after being scammed a few times, I am simply more selective(read:paranoid) about the people I send my dogs to. I do occasionally use the services of people who do spell certain things incorrectly, but usually only if I know they are well-known in the game.
 • Well, some ops(cant remember) suggest you open a program with spellcheck and check it there. So they sorta do and dont need to add spellcheck :/

 • There are other browsers you can use (i.e. Firefox) which has a spell check automatically.
Even if someone is well known doesn't make them better of a trainer, breeder, etc. than someone else.
I haven't been scammed or trolled on VP yet, so I do agree that the OPs are doing a very good job compared to some sites. I guess my experiences might also be why I'm not as sensitive/paranoid either, but I can see why you feel that way. My opinion is that if the person wants to scam someone, or just be plain rude(troll), they probably aren't too smart, and thus their spelling and what not is bound to be poor. Like you seem to be doing, the situation will just have to be judged individually by what the person has accomplished. One misspelled word is probably a typo, but a lot of misspelled words, lack of punctuation, or chat speech is something you should approach cautiously. I very cautious about people who use chat speech.

I was just going to say this. I use Firefox, and there is a built in spell checker. It underlines the misspelled word like in Microsoft Word. You right click, and select the correct word/spelling. You can even add in your own words to the dictionary(like names) if it doesn't recognize them.

 • I would never have a dog trained for me by someone who couldn't spell correctly or prove that they were in someway competent. That's why I'm a rescue, I don't have to deal with outside people very often. As for training, I only go to people I know and trust for stuff like that.
