Shaving Hair off for Charity?

edited June 2010 in General Discussion
So, my school do loads of thing throughout the year to raise money for a selected charity.
Most years we have a few guys offer to shave their hair off and be waxed to raise some money.

Basically they say 'We'll shave off our hair/ be waxed if people donate money and we get a total of £100 or more'
Once we get that £100, we'll then book the auditorium and then people can pay something like £2 to watch them shave their hair and get waxed
It's pretty amusing xD

Anyway, we have never had a female shave her hair off before.
But this year I want to shave my hair off xD

I mean, I could see my whole school willing to pay a lot to see my have my hair shaved off since no girl has ever done it from my school before.
And not to mention my hair is really long, so it could be donated to a charity which make wigs for those going through chemo, or suffer from alopecia(sp?) or have just lost their hair for whatever reason.

I asked my friends and NO ONE thinks I should.
I even asked a few teachers and they think it will psychologically damage me o_O

Then I asked my family, and they are absolutely fine with the idea.

So I dunno, what's everyone's ideas? Has any female here ever shaved their hair off for charity?

  • I've had it hacked to next to nothing. It's not going to psychologically damage you, that's and extremely stupid idea lol. It's a great idea if you ask me - it will raise a lot of money for a good cause, and your hair will go to make someone happy. Just don't forget to put sunscreen on your head!

I know, I cant see how it would psychologically damage me either.
She was going on about how cancer victims become very self concious and their self esteem pluments etc.
That I can understand, but they are going through something rather traumatic against their will.
I'm not, I'm choosing to do this from the good of my heart, so I can't see how I would be affected in the same way as them.

Being bald isn't something I would really care about. My hair is just there doing nothing, I'm not big on styling it every single morning. It just gets pulled back into a ponytail or bun every morning xD
  • Maybe she's thinking that you might be offended by people laughing at you and teasing you for being bald. And just staring at you in public places. After all, being bald isn't just a 24 hour thing. It'll take weeks for your hair to look somewhat normal again. So that's weeks of people looking at you, some maybe even assuming you yourself have cancer. If you aren't one of the "popular" kids, the teasing and such is going to be that much worse by your peers.

Now, if you don't think that will bother you, I say do what's in your heart to help.

Obviously I have considered that. Generally I'm the type of person who doesn't give and damn what people think, especially if I hardly know them.
So i know that strangers can stare and laugh on the street and it wont bother me.
The only instant in which it might ever hurt is if the people I am close to were to tease me. I already have my families backing on this, so that all good.
But my friends don't agree, and that's the only thing that is making me hesitant. I don't know the reason they don't agree, perhaps they too are worried people will point laugh and stare. Or perhaps they don't want to be friends with a bald person?

If my friends were to start teasing me about it then yeah, that would hurt. But at the same, wouldn't that show me they never really were true friends if they no longer like me simply because I have gone bald xD?
  • I've done the "Locks of Love" charity before and had my hair completely cut up to above my ears. Not completely shiny bald, but pretty close. It was put in the newspaper and everything else for giving to charity. So im sure yours would be in a newspaper or something for people to recognize how generous you are.
If people do make fun of you for it, why not say "I made a donation to charity to help other people so that they don't have to go through the crap you're doing to me right now, What have YOU done with your pathetic life?"

That's just my way of thinking though. Hair grows back, it's not like you're giving a kidney or something that will affect you for the rest of your life.

I think it's a very generous and amazing thing you're willing to do to help others.

  • If YOU'RE fine with it, and really want to do it, then go for it!
We had both girls and boys(who grew their hair out really long) shave their heads for donations while I attended high school. Even my brother who had grown really long hair shaved his off(for JROTC, not donation), and though he misses it, it will always grow back(which he is now doing since he graduated). It's unusual and shocking for about a week, but after that the excitement in the school begins to die down.

I personally wouldn't suggest going completely bald; a buzz cut would hide any bumps, and provide more protection from the sun.

If you're still having a lot of problems doing it, maybe try getting it cut short(like a pixie-bob) instead. I knew lots of girls with pixie-bobs, and they are generally really cute. Not as shocking, but it's for a good cause.

Don't be afraid to back out of it either. If you ever feel you can't do it, then don't continue with it because you feel like you have to follow through with it.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • This past year a little girl in my community passed away from Cancer and a ton of the little girls around here have shaved there heads. I found it so sweet and admired them for what they did for their friend.. I would absolutly go for it..

Plus it would take a lot less time to get ready in the morning :)
  • Alright I feel the need to share this story~
Paula is one of my dearest friends for many reasons. She is a fighter and she was adopted along with 2 of her brothers.

Last year, my friend Paula was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia that is fatal within 6 months if not treated.
When Paula found out about her illness she was submitted to the hospital and put on imediate and intense chemotherapy. The day before she started her first round she told her mom that she just wanted her head shaved so she wouldn't have to wake up to her hair on her pillow. So she and her family (all 9 of em!) had a "party" in her hospital room and they ALL shaved their heads.
It honestly was a great experience for all of them. Paula and I were always looking for cute hats and just hanging out together. I would;ve shaved my head for her in a heart beat but she decided that if her family wanted to do it for you then it would just be their family.

ps - Paula is now officially cancer free though she still has to get regular check ups and whatnot!
So I say go for it! I did "locks of love" far before I met Paula and I now know how much the kids appreciate it. (as Paula and I put it, it gave us some good excuses to go shopping for cute hats!!!)

  • I go to an all girl school. This year we did St. Baldricks abd Locks of Love. I know we had at least 10 girls, possibly 20, shave their heads. And I know we had at least 50 girls do Locks of Love. All their hair went to be made into wigs for cancer patients. No ome ever said anything to them apart from the occasional "Youre hair is so fuzzy! Can I pet it?" And this was before prom and everything, so some seniors went to prom bald. If you wanna do it, go for it. (:

  • :O I was going to do the Worlds Greatest Shave with my best friend this year.. untill her parents wouldn't let her ;-;
So about 5 of us are doing it next year ^.^

I had a girl in my class when I was younger who passed away from cancer.. the day we got told will forever be burnt into my memories :\ Not to mention losing a number of family to all kinds of cancer.. I'm all for supporting any kind of cancer charity.

Last year we had a senior girl shave her head for it.. she liked it so much she's kept her hair short ever since ;P She didn't get teased at all because everyone knew why she had done it and it was just accepted :)

I say the same as everyone else; If -you- want to do it, then do it ;)
  • You should! You could always wear a wig! I would do it as long as I knew there'd be a lot of money raised.. and someone with cancer could have my hair.

  • Thanks for the support guys :D

Locks for love? Maybe that's just an american thing but I've never heard of it.

At our school, the head of houses pick a charity and explain why we should back that charity etc.
The the whole school will vote for the charity they want to support for the year, and whichever charity has most votes is the one we support.

The only down side of this is that the charity we end up supporting might not be cancer related.
This year we have been supporting Help for Heroes, which basically provides rehabilitation and treatment and various after-care things for wounded troops. I would have taken part in the head shaving this year if it had been for a different charity. Not that I don't think Help for Heroes is doing a great job, it is, but I think the government should be providing that kind of stuff for our troops.

So anyway, if my school ends up supporting a cancer charity then I think I will defo get involved, if not then I might refrain depending on which charity wins.
  • Locks of Love, I believe, is mostly North American. You donate your hair to them and they create wigs for patients who lose their own hair. I don't cut my hair but every two years or so and always donate it when I do.
