• I would spend time to research every small breed, you have to base the breed off your lifestyle and what you can handle, not looks.
  • i would adopt a dog from a shelter, they really need homes and they can be really great loving puppies (:
  • Honestly, don't ask OTHERS what's best for you. Do your own research, -especially- if you plan on breeding. I'm not going to tell you 'don't just start breeding dogs', as much as I really want to, but do research. Lots of research. I believe Reina's rather knowledgeable about do's and don't's, as well as Wheaty, and a few others floating around.

Get a dog based on your personality, your location, and your abilities. Not based on looks. I know I'd love half a dozen breeds that I -can't- have because it wouldn't be fair to the dog. Keep this in mind, or you'll end up with a sad puppy. D8

  • I agree with the others. No one can really tell you what breed to get, because we just aren't you, and we know nothing about your life.

Here is a small article from the AKC. It poses some of the questions you will need to ask yourself, but there are plenty of others I could also think of. Take the time, and do lots of research for each breed that interests you.
<a href="http://www.akc.org/future_dog_owner/find_breed.cfm"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.akc.org/future_dog_owner/find_breed.cfm

; I currently own 2 poms, but I've owned many in the past(my mother used to breed them). I've owned 2 chihuahuas in the past, but I've been around TONS. Chihuahuas are actually a big problem for shelters in California since so many people buy, breed, and abandon them.

The two things I'll say about both breeds is that they are not for families with small children, and they can be really "needy. " If you have young children that live with you, or if you have young children visit alot then you should consider a different breed because both will bite if provoked by kids that don't know when to stop or calm down. They also get very attached to their owners, which can cause them anxiety when they can't be with you 24/7, and it can contribute to possessive behavior.

I find the reviews on this site to be very true to what you can expect of each breed.
<a href="http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/index.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/index.html

; Here is the one for poms. I find it to be exceptionally true.
<a href="http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/pomeranians.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/pomeranians.html

; Here is the one for chihuahuas. I find it to be a bit short/not detailed, but what is said I find true.
<a href="http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/chihuahuas.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/chihuahuas.html

; Though I like those reviews, I suggest looking up at least a dozen different one for each breed you are considering. Research is the key to finding the right dog for your family.

As for breeding, I'd suggest taking things one step at a time. Once you find a breed you think will work for your family, spend time living with it first so you can experience the breed first hand for a few years. Take the time to also join breed specific clubs, and learn the established standards. Remember, it's very important to breed because you love and wish to improve the breed in some way, not because you want money, think puppies are cute, or wish to "try it out" once.

----

If possible for you, I highly agree with what Celia says.

----

Good luck~
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
  • Breeding is actually freaky. I think people think it's "cute" but it's actually a serious thing.. I am actually, after 10+ years of research and interest in breeding, scared for my dear female dog to go into birth. I could lose her. One's goal to better the breed has to be stronger than the fear of losing their beloved pet. "Breeding" is overrated and should only be done by the most passionate about it, not just to try it out. It should be a lifetime dedication, nothing less.
