College English Paper

So here is buffy's first college english paper. It's just a short personal narrative about a subject we're passionate about. Fair warning, it has nothing to do with vp, dogs, animals or anything else for that matter, but i still want to share. True story by the way.
Feel free to critique [harsh critique is great.]

The Fate of Texas Schools
“Dillan Fairrel, 16, of Weatherford was found dead in eight feet of water at a small lake known as Lago Lindo Saturday eveningâ€

 • Thanks, it was supposed to be something that could be written in a reader's digest or similar magazine.

 • Buffy you made me angry reading this, I think that as a school they should have been more consiterate towards you and any one else at the school that would want to attend your friends funeral. Especialy since this is a student that ahd gone to that school, do they have no respect! Ugh Im glad you were able to attend his funeral and take the test.
 • Kitkat-- what made me the maddest was, he'd been at that school for 10 years. He moved to another school the year before his death. There were at least 6 kids i know of that wanted to go and were not allowed to. The only
reason i was able to take the test is that i told them that i would not be coming to school whether they said i had to or not. I'd gladly take remediation instead.
i didn't add that to the paper or the fact that the vice principal said if i did not show up the police would be at my door to arrest me for truancy.
The funny thing was, they couldn't count me truant until 9 am, at which point i would have already been at the funeral, so they couldn't have stopped me anyway.
I've had nothing but problems with this school system. But im out now, so it doesn't matter anymore.

 • I can't believe it. I typed up a nice response, and the power went out right before I could submit it!! Anyways...

This paper is beautiful, and you can tell it's really written with heart. It's also very professional. Definitely college level IMO. I think it's completely ridiculous that they could have make up days or something. You were going to a FUNERAL for crying out loud. It's all made worse by the fact that they didn't seem to care.

This out me back at square one where I started.
That's the only problem I found.

The schools out here are bad with testing too. From the beginning or primary school and through our testing years students are taught how to take tests, not to understand the material. It's all to get good scores for the school, and parents always complain because it hurts their kids.

All the public school administrators out here could also care less what happens to their students. I suffered a heat stroke because I was forced to walk almost 2 miles(no busing under 5 miles) home in 118 degree, carrying a whole bunch of text books, all while on medication that caused me to over heat. No one at the school cared even a little bit that I could have died on the side of the road if no one had come to find me as fast as they did. After that I went to an independent study school where I met the most inspiring teachers who would go above and beyond for their students. They were the only reason I didn't completely give up on trusting schools.

 • Thanks so much.
That actually means alot coming from you because you're someone on this site who i look up to. =D

I got one wonderful peer edit an awful one saying my paper lacked structure, meaning and emotion.
So i guess ill have to see what the professor says friday. -.-

Yeah the school's here just don't care at all whatsoever. We even had a teacher die and the school still counted it as an absence if you went to the funeral. =//

 • What? Why? You've been here way longer than me. I appreciate it though~ It's very sweet, though it caught me off guard. lol.

Maybe it's just easier for me to pick up on since I've been through the frustration of an uncompassionate school? Guess it depends on who is reading it, how they interpret it, and how they relate to it. I really like the style of it though. It's not sloppily emotional. It's very precise, and clear; just the way a college paper should be IMO.

If you miss a day for a funeral or something very important out here, you do get marked as being absent that day, but it's not counted towards truancy if you can get a letter or phone call from a parent explaining why you were gone. Seriously, what would your school say if a student had a parent die? "No, you have to be here at school." I would just leave if and not go back if a school told me that.

 • Because you're one of the few here who backs what they say with more than "That's ugly or you're wrong" without explanation lol.

And yeah the school sucks, but i'm out now so oh well.
They literally did tell one girl that missing two weeks for her brother's death was unacceptable and the grieving process does not take more than a week. >.<

 • Ah, I see. I think it's very important to back up what you say. Misunderstandings normally lead to fighting so I try to get my point across the first time. Thank you very much for the compliment.

Yay, for no longer having to deal with high school-!

...wow. Everyone grieves differently. Some people take months. I don't think 2 weeks is an unacceptable amount of time. Anything longer, might hurt some students, but if the school is willing to cooperate then deals can be worked out to make it easy for them. That's why I liked being in independent study. They accommodated kids that the public schools would not.

 • I have to interject and say that I despise peer review passionately. If I wanted to learn from people without degrees I would become a hobo, not spend an anxiety-inducing amount of money to have a professor fob their job off on their students. But, that was my first english teacher - no real personal involvement until she was shockingly critical on our final papers. I'm lucky to have passed - my C was the highest grade in my class by far. *grumbles*

 • Sushi-- i definitely know where you're coming from on all angles.

Xae-- I hate peer editing also. I got to edit the papers of idiots who have no idea how to write. >.<
It's obnoxious and I really don't care what any of my peers think of my writing.
