Beach Cake & Class of 2010..

edited May 2010 in General Discussion
If this is in the wrong spot feel free to move it.

Today I did a beach-themed cake for one of my old teachers and her class. I didn't account for enough time, so a lot of the design ended up being ditched. The shells are real, but were soaked in soap for 16 hours and boiled twice for a total of 3 hours to rid them of anything.

I chose her last period class, since my younger brother and our best friend is in there. That, and I could make them carry have to supplies to the classroom and they couldn't object. :P

<img src="http://natsiya.com/images/bc1.png"; alt="http://natsiya.com/images/bc1.png"; class="bb-image" />

<img src="http://natsiya.com/images/bc2.png"; alt="http://natsiya.com/images/bc2.png"; class="bb-image" />

The original design called for a 6 inch tall sand castle, a flag that said "Summer 2010", little umbrella straws, and a bunch of shell shaped candies. I had to substitute Life Savers for shell candy, I couldn't find any shark, fish, shell, or beach appropriate candy. I didn't have time to bake, cut, stack, etc. the sand castle.

It was a half sheet devils food cake plus an 8 inch and a 6 inch stacked on top. Total weight was somewhere between 7 and 9 pounds, without the shells. The frosting was a very thick fudge-like frosting. I actually needed it to be thinner but even adding more milk didn't loosen it up.

The entire class thought it was good though. Some described it as "rich", "really sweet", and that it "melts in your mouth". Maybe they were being nice, but eh. A lot of them asked for second pieces, and the entire cake was pretty much gone in 15 minutes.

So... Moving on.

Is anyone here graduating from high school this year? I know of two, but anyone else?
I'm not specifically asking for your age, but if you feel this is inappropriate just let me know. I know people who have graduated HS anywhere from age 15 to 23.. Sadly 23 is actually true, but at least he graduated.

If you'd like to know why I'm asking feel free to send me a message or post here.

- Anastasia

lol. I looked for Swedish fish at Walmart and I couldn't find them. If I was in the city, there's a candy/chocolate store that carries everything from American candy to Australian candy, biscuits, candy-themed toys, season related items, and other goodies. They would have had all sorts of things I could have used.

And I suppose I'll give a hint as to why I'm asking about 2010 graduates. For one, my real class is 2010. Second, there's a little treat for the true 2010 grads. :P
