In MY state it doesnt matter... Also it will depend alot on the breeder and the person they are selling to

If someone is selling pups before 8 weeks they are either just tired of caring for them or just want to make a quick buck.
Why do you think the puppies are so small in pet stores and they sell them so cheap? It's because they are under 8 weeks and they are just looking for a sale.
If a breeder is selling before 8 weeks then they are a kennel/puppy mill.
I've never known a small home raised reputable breeder to sell before 8 weeks.
  • Yea but like my mom did... sometimes someone was buying a puppy for christmas or a birthday so they would ask for it.... the puppy would only be 6 weeks but it was old enough to be weaned because it can eat hard puppy food. So my mom would sell it then

We had people who were giving puppies for there birthday.
They just came to our house on the kids birthday.
And if they wanted them for Christmas they came over for an early present.
The puppies we had never left before the 8 weeks.
It didnt matter.
If the people wanted them that much they would just have to wait for them.

No offense, but it sounds like a "I just want the money" scenario.
Those who buy puppies for their kids on Christmas/birthdays and other holidays, well, the puppy is most likely sitting and rotting in their backyard now, if not already taken to a shelter. Once the thrill of that puppy wears off when it's older that's what happens, especially with kids. Puppies are not toys.
  • Yea well it wasnt a money thing because my mom could sell the pup to anyone else its just the fact that the puppy was old enough to be weaned and wouldnt you be sad if you couldnt buy a puppy for your kid for a holiday?

Actually, just because the puppy was eating puppy food, does not mean that the puppy still did not nurse.
No, I wouldn't be sad - because I don't plan to "buy" my kids animals as a gift.
I plan to be a Great Dane breeder, so we will have plenty of dogs. But, if my kids want a puppy/dog or any other animal of their own then they have to PROVE to me they can take care of it and will not get bored and leave me to care for it. Then I will allow them to go to the animal shelter and adopt, rather than buying from a breeder.

I'm not attacking. xD
I'm having a conversation with her about what I know, and we are both stating our opinions.
  • Yeah, debating opinions, it's nothing personal.

In my humble opinion, breeders that allow people to buy dogs from them to give to a friend clearly don't care where their puppies go because they don't screen possible homes in this instance. They obviously don't screen the buyer because the buyer isn't the one that the puppy is going to live with. And simply, a breeder that doesn't extensively screen homes is like the breeder that puts their pups in a pet shop because they don't know or really care where the puppies go. Then they probably don't care if the puppy is bought at 8 weeks or 4 weeks.

In all my research and experience of responsible breeders, I've never seen a purchase contract that included the resale or the "giving away" of puppies to be allowed. It's always been a "do this and I'll sue you" type thing.

I'm with Avla I wouldn't buy pets as gifts either, as least not for kids. The idea of kids getting ponies, puppies, kitties, etc. for presents is never good. Once the "wow" factor is gone kids stop taking care of their pets, and then when the parents feel the burden of it the pet goes to the pound/rescue/etc. I've actually talked to a few breeders that won't sell on or around holidays to people they haven't extensively talked to, because it encourages the whole "pets as toys" thing. Adopting an animal should always be special, whether it's on a holiday or not.

Personally, I've gotten animals as pets, and hope it doesn't happen again. Next time I'd prefer to be well prepared ahead of time, and I'd like to pick out the animal so I get the right match for me.
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.
