Math D:

edited May 2010 in Vent
I wish I was one of those people that were naturally good at it and loved it, I really, really do.

I'm not even that far in school (well, doesn't seem like it anyway), and I already cannot understand math. My math teacher tries to explain, but I just DON'T GET IT.

And what makes me really upset is I NEED math to get further in education. The way the teachers make it sound, it's the most important subject I'll need to know.

But I have an extremely hard time with it. I need a tutor, but my parents don't have the money right now. :(

I'm passing by 4%. That's horrible. And I can't get the grade up. Makes me wanna cry. ;_;

 • I knwo this sounds weird, but some math is harder than others for some people.
I passed Algebra II with a 64% after workign ALL THE TIME to understand. I'm in AP stats and I have an A.
Statisitcs makes sense to me, but algebra doesn't, at all.
So maybe it's just the type of math you're doing, or how you're learning it.
 • Hahaha, I couldn't even help my 4th grade brother out with pie charts xP I haven't used them in forever.

Uglydog: Sounds similar to me. It took me four years to understand point slope and balancing equations and such, that now that I understand it, algebra I is easy.

So's that basic chemistry. ;D

 • I know how you feel.
Math is the hardest subject ever.
Teacher explains it but i still dont get the slope things x.x

 • What makes me angry is after I learn it, I'm not really going to use it. Which means I'll forget it, and it all makes it a waste of time and effort!

Uglydog: Some math comes easier, but none of it comes easy. I have a little bit of trouble with most of it, except the simple kinds (addition, subtraction, multiplication.. uh, sad thing is sometimes I have trouble with division. xD)
 • Algebra I and Algebra II were the two easiest math classes for me. Im taking Pre-Calculsus next year 0.0 I think I have like a 93 in Algebra II, but that was after studying my butt off and getting my older brothers help =(

If you do get a tutor, maybe don't get one that you're really close friends with.. I tried that and just got distracted and couldn't work lol =)

Hang in there, it'll get better one day =)

I can't subract 7 or 8 from any number smaller than them without it taking FOREVER. D:
And Like, some things in Stats I struggle with, but nothing like ALgebra II.
Parabolas? Uhm, no thanks. Useless junk.
But everything in my stats class is applicable to real life.
The problems are actually taken from REAL studies and experiments, which is cool. Also, it helps out with AP bio.
 • I'm taking Alg 2 this year >.<
Half of it is EASY for me and the other half will NEVER make sense at all.
I'm so glad its my last year of math.

Who cares about shapes and polyhedra or whatever?

So yeah, I know how you feel. |: Geometry is harder for me than Algebra I was. D:

Just hang in there! You'll get through it. • When it comes to math if you're not getting it you don't want to spend too long waiting, or else by the time finals or the next year roll around you'll be struggling because you never properly learned the prior level of math, and thus you increase your chance of failing.

I'd highly suggest getting a tutor, or seeking out a program that is specialized in aiding students that have difficulty learning. If you can't afford it then you should talk to the school to find cheap or free alternatives. Most schools can pair you up with a student that wants extra credit at least, but others might know tutors that teach poor kids for free.

I've never had a problem with math, but I did do free tutoring when I was still in high school. The biggest reason my fellow peers seemed to struggle were the style in which it was taught, low effort, and/or high distractions. It could be that the style of teaching your teacher uses simply isn't working with you, which is why a tutor is important. Math also takes a lot of time to learn and perfect. Most students set aside a very small amount of time to work on math, and that time normally isn't enough. When learning math you should always do it away from all distractions such as TVs, phones, computers, toys, and what not even if they are off. There are plenty of other reasons as well. It's very important to identify what is preventing you from learning so that you can correct it.

Math is not impossible to learn, and can actually be easy when you have the right tools, instructor, and environment.

Good luck.

Omg! I agree with that! I admit.. I got a lot of the answers in geometry from my friends. We were always allowed to work together because our teacher would never really help us =/ I learned just enough to pass my tests and final exams and that was it.

You guys only have to take up to Alg II? We have to take [foundations if needed], Alg I, geometry, alg II and an extra math class like statistics or moduler mathematics or precal or something like that. I'm taking mod. math junior year.
Those are the only required maths, you can choose any other math class as your fourth. I'm taking advanced functions and modeling (pretty much geometry review) this year and next year I'm taking discrete math (algebra 2 review). Precal would have been the biggest mistake ever.

Algebra I, algebra II, and geometry are all required here too, and then you generally have to take an extra, but I think it's not mandatory(depends on various things). I took business math as my 4th(needed the credits to graduate a year early).
