Holy crap!

Once apon a very hot and sunny Sunday afternoon, Kaytee and the across the street neighbor kid Stephen decided to go for a walk. We originally wanted to go to the stables, but the hay they grow was too high. So we decided to meet Kathy* and Eva* in the neighborhood next to the plaza. We walked through the big field between the plaza and the neighborhood. Stephen stepped very close next to something black and shiny. Kaytee looked closer to see that it was a big black spider. With a red hourglass shape on the underside of its stomach. Kaytee then proceeds to yell "OH MY GOD STEPHEN ITS A FREAKING BLACK WIDOW!", among strings of profanity, and then runs away. Then, she decides her dad would want proof that she saw a black widow. She goes to take a picture of it [lol. Don't ask. They're pretty spiders. Until they bite you and you go to the ER ;D ], and it lunges at her foot. She then freaks out and gets the hell out of that field, sticking to the main street. Later on that night, forgetting about the black widow, Kaytee goes to bed. About 3 in the morning, she wakes up thinking there are black widows underneath her pillow. She then gets up, turns on the light, and changes her sheets. Still unable to sleep, she talks to her favorite uncle until 4:30, when she finally falls asleep. ...I hate spiders. I forgot they had black widows here. I was looking for brown recluses because I really don't want a decaying spider bite on my hand. This happened yesterday xD [this is why my parents call me kayteebug. I love spiders~ Crab spiders are my favorites, probably followed by banana spider(though I've never seen one in person). I don't know if right now is the best time, but once it gets warmer at night you can easily find 1-2 dozen black widows around my house. I've actually been bitten a few times, but I never saw a doctor. I think the only spiders that make me nervous are sow bug killers, and they are harmless...they remind me of ticks...

wow.. the brown recluse spiders are the main ones we have here around my house thankfully. i mean those are very dangerous but at least they are the only kind.. i know how you feel. i hate all kinds of spiders. im always like "kill it!" and the other person is like "they arent even doing anything" and ill always look at them like they are dumb and go "and? its alive. kill it." lol

Sushi: I HATE spiders. Except the little jumpy ones. But. They jump on me, they're dead. Garnet: I know, right? Mom always yells at my family because killing spiders is apparently bad luck o.O

I hate spiders! My mom loves them. She will pick them up XD As long as they arent the posionious ones. I kill them right away! I had a battle with a nasty wolf spider the other day!

I personally don't like when people kill spiders(or any insects) for no reason other than "Ew, it's a spider!" Now my brother will sit there and spray half a can of spider spray on ONE spider(I'm not even exaggerating!), and it makes me so mad because all he has to do is come get me so I can grab the thing and take it outside. Herpetology is my first love, and entomology is my second. <a href="http://www.spidercatcher.net/"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.spidercatcher.net/</a> I've heard it works. There's also a bug vacuum toy out that supposedly works too. 2 great alternatives to sprays and smashing.

oh my god. i would have been like crying. spiders scare the crap outta me. i don't have spiders here i hope at least o.O well i mean those big gross posionous variety

It wouldn't have lunged at my foot had I not gone back to take a picture of it xD I wanted a picture of it. It was really pretty. And hanging upside down in its web so you could see the hourglass (: And full sunlight was hitting it. So it was pretty. I might actually have to get a spider catcher thing. -goes to look-. Because we get wolf spiders all the time here, and those things get really big. And there was one crawling across my bathroom wall the other night that scared the piss outta me. And then the one that was hiding on my shirt [my room is a safehaven for spiders. Maybe I should clean it sometime.] was really big. I had to call mom to get it. xD

-edit- The only spiders I like are Daddy-Long Legs. They're cool and interesting to me. xD Even if I see a tinsy-winsy little spider I squeal until a boy or someone who isn't afraid of spiders...kills it. xD

Daddy long legs are one of the most posionous spiders in the world, but their mouths are too small to bite us. :P

It's not that their mouths are small, it's that their fangs are short...and I actually believe they can bite puncture human skin, and that their venom is not very potent. It's just a myth.

Really....? I always thought they were harmless. I used to always pick them up when I was little.

I knew a girl who seriously had like, diagnosed arachnophobia. In the middle of class there'd be a spider on the floor and she'd scream and like start crying and run out of the room.

I kinda felt bad for her but I don't really understand it. You're like a billion times bigger than it and it's not going to kill you just by being beside you... I wanted to tell her but she'd probably just blow up at me and ask me why I'm scared of tornados.

I probably have arachnophobia, but not as bad as the girl you mentioned, Reina. xD I swear, spiders are just absolutely disgusting. I have insectophobia, actually. o: Sometimes I can't even go outside to my backyard in the summertime because I'm afraid bees will come after me. My mom has to have the gardener come and kill all the morning glory flowers in our yard just because of me. T T & I've never seen a black widow before. o: Are they really that poisonous?

Awww. I was thinking today, like, why am I creepied out by spiders but not by ants? They're like the same thing, crawly and small and black. I don't know. Maybe I watched too much "Are You Afraid of the Dark" when I was little. Apparently the bite is pretty painful but there's not a huge chance you'll die from it. They are toxic... but its not like being bitten by a snake or something. It will depend on your size/age/physical condition what exactly happens to you. Just don't pick it up or touch or bother it and it won't bother you.

Yes and no. I've been bitten a few times. Some only get body aches and a little cramping, but others get more severe reactions. The people that are likely to need immediate care from a doctor are children, the elderly, people with heart or chest problems, and any other potentially dangerous conditions like a compromised immune system. Of course, if you're allergic you should also see a doctor immediately, but most people won't know that until they get bitten for the first time. You can essentially treat a black widow bite on a healthy adult at home with over the counter pain medication and rest. My bites just made me feel like I got beat up. Ever gotten that throbbing pain in your legs from shopping all day, or going to an amusement park? Well imagine that all over.
