On the chicken breeding.. ITS HARD. I have never even made the SALE and my dad RAISES chickens and out of like... 6 tries i dont get in the top 30. UGH. But you want a chicken with a NICE LOOONG Brest and make sure its thick and full.. ALSO. MAKE SURE THE EVENT ISNT TURMINAL! You would HATE to have Kirby killed im sure!
 • I've shown Cochins and Sebrights in open shows before. Unless you want to fork out a LOT of money on nice birds, you probably won't place. I never have. There are people in the poultry world that put all of their money into breeding and exibiting their birds. There are some stunning animals there.

I think you should attend an open show that also has a juniors class. Talk to the judges and other exibiters and they will help you a lot. My best friend's dad is a huge chicken guy. I've been to many shows with them and have learned so much from him and the judges. In Juniors, you can stand next to the judge as he examines your bird and he'll tell you what is off about him.
 • @Vamp: Terminal? They can do that? o.o Around these parts - selling, breeding, raising, etc. chickens isn't hard because people are always looking for quality egg layers, meat birds, etc.

@Zagari: We have a lot of fairs with livestock - so I planned on going to shows and learning before actually getting into it. Thanks for the tips. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Kirby and my grandma's hens fill out. Thanks for the tips.
 • Yea.. Terminal. So there is no way there can be an outbreak of bird flu.
Here they kill all birds you show.
 • That's horrible. I don't think chickens suffer from bird flu as much as wild birds would, but I could be wrong - I wouldn't show Kirby in a terminal show.
