As an HSUS employee for the better part of a year, I have many arguments, but this isn't really the place to get into it over such sensitive topics lol.
Sure, it may seem odd for us to think of dogs as being equal to humans... We've been programed to think of them as pets. Which is totally fine, honestly let's consider what would happen if dogs were equals. First off, dogs cannot communicate in complete sentences... only, I am hungry or tried or... ect. Not where they'd like to sleep, or what they'd like to eat. So how could they be equal when they cannot order their own food? Would they be allowed to vote? Hello PETA, but dogs cannot drive either. Animals could not own houses... I could go on and on. In my house, and I think I speak for most of us, my dogs are my children. That is as equal as it can get I believe. I take them everywhere with me, I feed them high quailty food and treats. They sleep in my bed. They get doctor care when needed... They have a dog door and an area kept very clean.. They have "friends over" all the time. To me, that seems totally fair. I take care of them, and they fetch for me. Make sense? Sure, not everyone should own an animal... That goes said all in it's own. However, most could be taught. It's not that the majority of them are cruel, just ignorant. Some people eat animals, and I hate the thought of an animal dying so I may have my hamburger, but it's a food chain. Should we starve cows because grass should be equal? No. I'm not going to get in a cow's head, and I won't say I know about everything but what's a good life for a stock animal? They breed and eat. They aren't pets so they don't nessacaryly want affection from people. I hope I'm not rambling too awful much. Anyways, I'm disgusted with PETA. Pets all deserve to be found homes that will care for them properly. If one can't be found? They should either be humanly euthanized or kept as a shelter animal for the duration of it's life. Like ASPCA will put down aggressive dogs (that came from dog fighting) because they're too aggressive and unstable to be a pet... Which is what most dogs/cats want to be if I may speak for them. Is it so tragic that dogs are not equal that we must kill them? I speak for everyone when I say this: that dogs (and other animals) need us to care for them in this urban world we've developed into, and I believe strongly that they depend on us like a child would it's mother, or father. Should we not give them the pack they yearn for?
I completely agree. I treat my dogs as children too. Also about the food-chain thing I agree with that too. I mean other animals kill for food, and we have the teeth of omnivores, which makes us able to chew meat so why not? But if you choose to be a vegetarian that's fine with me I'm not going to stop you.

Same goes for PETA, if you believe they're good go ahead. If you don't then that's fine too
