• I have all my dogs sterilized. With males, it's not bad at all and they are generally fine after a week. You won't be able to bathe him, so if possible due so before surgery, or not at all if he is clean. Post surgery you just have to avoid getting the area wet for 7-10 days. The first couple days you will also have to prevent him from running around by keeping him confined to a single room or in a crate. To exercise him just put him on a leash and go for short 5 minute walks. Be patient when he needs to potty, because it's gonna be sore and he might squat to pee for the first couple days. If you pick him up(I don't know if you have a small dog or big dog), support his back legs so no pressure is put on the incision. One important thing to remember is to not put anything on the area unless you vet recommends it, and make sure he isn't licking it excessively. Above all make sure he gets plenty of water.

Your vet will probably give you a post surgery care sheet when you pick him up.

Here is a website that I feel covers everything my vet's care sheet says.
<a href="http://petcare.suite101.com/article.cfm/how_to_care_for_a_dog_after_neutering_surgery"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://petcare.suite101.com/article.cfm/how_to_care_for_a_dog_after_neutering_surgery;

I'm sorry to hear you got grounded. A lot of people in general own dogs, and most of the members on VP own/show/work with/rescue/breed dogs. I just adopted another one, and had him neutered 3 weeks ago. However, my mother would say the exact same thing about anyone over the internet. Just fire away at the vet with all your concerns and questions, and if you want to show her articles in the meantime I recommend reputable websites like the ASPCA.

By the back leg thing, you mean supporting him while holding him? I'm not actually sure how much that applies to males, but with females that have been spayed(and dogs that have had surgery) our vet has always told us not to let their back legs hang(if possible) while being held because it pulls the skin, which puts pressure on the stitches. I've always transferred it to males as a precaution, and of course supporting their back legs, whether they just had surgery or not, helps them feel secure. If he isn't a lap dog that you are constantly picking up, then it doesn't really matter. It's a recommendation, not something that needs to be followed.

Let me just emphasize that having a dog neutered is very minor and it's not something that should scare you. I'm positive your vet will give you all the information you need(and maybe more), so just stay calm. :)
You can let your mom know that most of us also show/train real dogs. My mom used to have a legal paying job at the shelter when I was 8+, now we just volunteer(but we're up there pretty much every day. :-P). Male dogs have an instinct to breed atleast twice a year. If they don't, they can go into a sort of depression and get very agressive. I wouldn't think anything about neutering. One of the most easy and necissary surgeries there is. Don't worry, if you have a good vet then pretty much nothing can go wrong.

 • Thanks guys, I think she might have just had a bad day with everything that happened. But even telling her most of you guys have your own dogs and have experiance doesnt seem to tell her anything. But I talked to the vet and made sure I got all the info.

Hes home, and he actually has been going up on the couch (not jumping just stepping up), and going down about 3 stairs we have at the back door, so far he has been fine. Hes eating, and back to his old begging self, but of course he has medicience to take which he hates. The only thing he still does is flinch when we get to his eyes (hes a pug, although he hasnt been that distrusting in a while, and when he came out his eye was red.) The vet dismissed it as oh it will be fine, but I have a feeling they actually poked him in the eye. He also now has a tatoo in his right ear, so that is sore and we cant pet that ear.

He was flinching and shaking last night, but it seems to have woren off.

Thanks again for those who read and responded.
 • I'm glad to hear everything is going good, and that you got all your answers from the vet.
