Surgery

edited February 2010 in Vent
Anyone ever had any type of surgery? Then you understand it is a giant pain in the ass.
Sunday night I went to the hospital with what my mom said was "gas". Seven hours later, and plenty of embaressment, I was having my poor 'lil appendix removed. It hurt, omg. They finally gave me morphine cause I was like to the point of crying/hyperventalating/screaming. I felt like my stomach was going to explode. It was so badly swollen, it looked like I was prego. Riight. Anyways, so after surgery I wake up screaming that I need to pee. Like, you do not understand. Imagine not going for a week. That is how I felt, only I didn't really have to go. I tried and tried and my mom told me to stop bugging the nurses cause it was three a.m. It was because of the thing they put in you during surgery. Terrible, terrible, worse feeling everr. Then I wake up and all they talk about is how they'd like me to hurry and do my "business" so I can go home. They're like, walk around. Okay... three days before this incident, I BROKE MY ANKLE! I was on crutches and had surgery on my stomach. I couldn't use my abs, crutches were absolutely out of the question. So I was forced to walk on my bad ankle, so that I did not have a hernia or worse from my incisions. I'm not really gonna go into anymore detail, it was horrible, the whole thing, except for the nice nurses:]] Buutt. It sucked. I'm still having problems with it. So.. moral of the story - never have surgery.

 • I have Hydrocephalus. It's where you have "water on the brain". I was born 3 mo. premature. And weighed 2lbs. 12oz. and was only expected to live less than 30 days. The first few days of life, I had dropped down to 1lb. 3oz. I was only 6" long too. So getting back to the "Hydrocephalus", everyone has a "natural tube" that drains fluid from their brain to their bladder. I was born too early, so mine never developed. And now since I was a few days old, I have this tube that drains fluid from my brain to my abdomin/stomach instead of my bladder.
I have 2 incision scars on my stomach, and multiple incision scars on my head. If I shave my hair off, it looks like a baseball... No joke. My newest scar to my head is a 2.5" long incision that had been cut down my neck. In 2006, the tube had came loose from the "port" that is connected into my head. The tube then slid 2.5" down my neck (the tube goes from the right-back side of my head down my neck, over my right-side collarbone then down the right-side of my body.) and the doctors had to "fish it out". My doctor that normally did my sugeries on my "shunt" (this is what the whole tube set up is), was unavailable, so I had a new doctor who knew barely a thing about it. Anyway, after the sugery was finished, I woke up completely nakie (I went in fully clothed), and in a hospital nightgown. They had circled every scar I had on my body... Including 2 hernia surgery scars I had from when I was 5 yrs. old (hernia's SUCK!) So I just thought that was kinda weird. Anyway, I dont like when people bother me about pain medication. I dont take it, or any other type of medication, and had told my nurses this from the time I had gotten out of surgery. The same nurses bugged me every few hours and asked me if I wanted pain meds. No matter HOW bad the pain is... I dont take pain meds. At-all. So I got very annoyed with them, and wasnt very nice to them at all :S

I have to have my "shunt" replaced every 8-10 yrs. or whenever it malfunctions. When it starts to malfunction, all the fluid gets backed up in my head, and puts pressure on my eyes, sinuses... Everything in my head. And if it's not severe enough, the doctors will just stick a 6" long needle into the "shunt's port" to "suck out" at-least 15-20 CC's of fluid. My head feels SO good after the instant relief, but I get dizzy right after it's performed, and unfortunately, the relief is only temporary until I would get it fixed.
I've had my "shunt" replaced 3 times since living in Alaska. In 97', 99' and 06'. But it had been repaired, switched and changed multiple times before 97', due to growing, etc. I imagine the shunt tube would be like a fish aquarium tube that connects to an airpump. It's not very thick or anything, and very flexible. So idk. I've never seen what it looks like though unfortunately.
Longest I stayed in the hospital was for 6 mo. straight, when I was 4 yrs. I was in the hospital for 3 mo. when I was first born. And then usually just 2wks. to 1 mo. 2 wks. is the least amount of time I've ever spent in a hospital though.

So I know it sucks. I hope you get better soon though :)
