Alpacas!?

edited February 2010 in Vent
Alpacas, what are they? I hear this like 10 times a day when I go to explain something about my babies. And me being the expert I am in explaining can only go " Oh they're like a little Llama". Alpacas originated in Peru and are prized for their fleeces<br><br><img src="http://i47.tinypic.com/2el6yvr.jpg"; alt="http://i47.tinypic.com/2el6yvr.jpg"; class="bb-image" /><br><br><img src="http://i47.tinypic.com/vgo3fp.jpg"; alt="http://i47.tinypic.com/vgo3fp.jpg"; class="bb-image" /><br><br><img src="http://i49.tinypic.com/2hs3c6g.jpg"; alt="http://i49.tinypic.com/2hs3c6g.jpg"; class="bb-image" /><br><br><img src="http://i49.tinypic.com/2hzh06c.jpg"; alt="http://i49.tinypic.com/2hzh06c.jpg"; class="bb-image" /><br><br>Alpacas are a lot more than little Llamas they are amazing little animals and I highly suggest you guys get out there and visit a farm or two. Even people who dont like animals apperciate alpacas.

They are the cutest when they are crias in full fleece, My aunts are just starting to get really fuzzy and im loving it.:) And they are becoming more popular, your starting to see a lot more people at shows and I know of quite a few farms that have gotten into the business this past year. And most are the sweetest things, I was sitting in the barn the other day and one was nibbling my hair. One of the babies was sniffing my cellphone when I got a text and the ring scared her, But they are really curious so she went back again and explored, then tried to climb the fence, the little buggar!

They are really sweet and gentle natured though.
  • Cute! I'd love to raise alpacas one day, how much do they cost and how much room do they need? (Sorry for all the questions!)

  • Heehee no problem, the price really varies on the quality of the animal, like you could gt an okay breeding female for as little as 3000 but a nice high quality one could go for 20,000. Pet males are around 500-1000 dollars but some go for free to good homes. The highest selling alpaca went for 500,000. And not much I have heard of them living on front lawns before. I think the general area is 5 animals per acre, If you dont have a farm you could always just board them to at a farm close to you and visit often
  • Oh wow, they are pretty expensive. Do you sheer them and sell the wool?

  • Yes, you can buy raw wool, yarn, sweaters, socks, blankets, scarfs,etc.. and they are quite costly but you can gain money with sales an breeding, A 1000 dollars breeding that results in a female cria(baby alpaca) could go for 2000 seeing as its a maiden or higher depending on quality.
  • And the babies are too darn cute, I think I have some pics posted in the pets forum of my aunts babies
  • I loves them :) and they are so much cuter and softer than Llamas because of their awesome wool :D I shall own some one day hehe.
  • They protect sheep good too :D
