I'm a big fan of dragons. They have really heavy scaling.
The most I've paid for a betta is $16. Mine have all come from petstores. In the future, I intend to get some quality fish from a breeder and join the IBC to eventually enter in shows. The world of Betta splendens is crazy. You'd never imagine how crazy people go over fish. I can't say much... cause I'm one of them.

Those are fish that have been fed food with dye in it to color them. Not the best for their health... I have looked at mollies, but I don't know how many an be put in a 5 gallon, if any.

...You can sorta of see the stripes because they are usually zebra danios with dye!

Really? I didn't know that was possible, but these are beautiful fish! Are they any similar to that color that are natural?
To the post above, the original fish are black and white, if that's what you meant.

If you meant can you buy any like that, you can buy platies in similar reds and yellows, and neon tetras, and glow light tetras. Green, I don' think so. Guppies can be colorful too!

I looked on the website that pic came from, and it said the fish were gentiaccly engineered with some sort of gene that makes them colorful. It also said they are illegal in California and some other states.....
I'd go purple, green, yellow, white or really any of the rarer colors. Maybe a nice red... (I think I'll go betta and guppies or betta and something. maybe white cloud minnows).

A lot of betta don't get along with guppies and vice versa. It's a combo best to avoid, even though there are exceptions.

If you're going to keep a betta with your ghost shrimp, look out. I know many bettas that will eat the shrimp. Some do get along fine with them though.
Yes, some will nip at shrimp, but it's fine unless your fish are constantly killing them or stress out because of them. If your betta eats one, just clean it up and get rid of it. Ghost shrimp are actually sold as feeders.

I'd also recommend a small filter, otherwise you'll have to clean the tank ALL the time.
Yes, a filter is an absolute MUST if you have fish. For a 5 gallon tank you should be able to use a power filter(Tetra is a good brand). Shrimp require good water, and are perfect to use in order to

Would ghost shrimp take up extra room in my tank, or just be a cleaning cre? (like, do they need a gallon each?)
Ghost shrimp have a low bioload. Ghost shrimp aren't big on algae though, they prefer to clean up extra food. You could probably get away with 2-3 a gallon at your tank size, though I would not recommend more than 10 with single, or small school(3) of fish.

Just be prepared. Unless you start a big farm, there is no real profit in breeding them, but I was never in it for a profit. I just love the little guys.

I don't know. I had a betta that was fine with guppies, and that was my only one, so it really depends. I also wouldn't pay $10 for a fish, never mind $20-$30!
A lot of people have problems paying such high fees when the stereotype is that fish don't live long, and are boring. I've paid upwards of $100 for a single fish before, others will pay $20,000 for fish. When I bred bettas I probably spent hundreds upon hundreds, and it wasn't profitable, but I did it because I loved it. I guess it's the same reasoning behind people that won't pay $500 for a dog.

This is true. I'm in Cali, and you can not legally buy these fish because they are genetically changed to be those colors....but yet one of my local pet stores sell tattooed fish...oh California....

I have no intention of getting into it for profit. Just like dog showing, there is hardly ever a profit. It takes a lot of time and money to produce a quality animal. Just a hobby.
I would be against any barbs. And if you're going to do a betta, just do the single fish with some shrimp. A five gallon is kind of small. In general, the rule is 1 gallon per 1 inch of fish.
I agree. Just be wary of using the "1 gallon per 1 inch of fish" guideline since it often isn't correct. I'd reserve said guideline for fish that are an inch, and any fish over an inch should be researched to find the optimal requirements for the amount of bioload they contribute to your tank.

1. If male guppies don't have a problem with each other, this should be fine.
2. I have to agree with zagari wolf, a betta would be best by by itself unless you are able to correctly identify how it will react. If you want to do this, get the betta and wait a few months to gauge how spunky he is
3. I don't know much about platies personalities, but this sounds fine.
4. I would not suggest barbs for a 5 gallon. They do much better in larger groups.
5. They get too large for a 5 gallon.
6. Other than the betta option(because I'm biased), this is my favorite.

I'm a little wary about the neons because the last pet store I went to had a tank full of some sick some not sick neons, and I wasn't allowed to pick any, so I got sick ones, and didn't even know I had 50/50 odds of that until I looked carefulyl when I returned them. I don't think it would be a SMART idea to name said PET store, because I can't base that opinion on any facts but 90% of the fish I've bought there. (death or illness)

Like the bettas, like the platies, like the guppies and I'll choose based on health.
Tattooed fish? Weird!!! But great, now you guys have got me wanting to dig my old fish tank out of the basement and get fish! Oh well, for now I'm happy with my silly little purple betta!

lol I have two "purple" females. Their pictures are in the Pet Gallery.

Wow! My betta's not as purple as that! He's more of a darker color purple, with a different tail. But yes, I think he's beauitul....no pics though, sorry. I am panning on getting another betta soon. I can't wait!

That betta is a true purple. Meaning, it is purple. My two fish are blue/red. I don't quite remember which it is but mine is a blue with a red overlay or vice versa. That is how most "purple" bettas are.

You have good taste. lol
I actually remember owning one that was purply pink now. It died in less than a year though, because it was a class pet (I brought him in, stupid me!) and he died 3 days before summer vacation ended, so he was alive for half a school year and a summer. Poor guy!
