Suggestions Needed-Help Decide on a Puppy Name!

Well, after almost two years of trying to find the perfect breed and breeder, and convince my parents to let me get a third dog, I think I finally did it. Hopefully, early this summer, I will be purchasing a miniature dachshund. We have found a breeder that is reliable and only a few hours away. The only thing stopping us from getting the puppy is money. In order to get a mini doxie from this breeder, i'm goign to need about $500. Not to mention the cost of spaying/neutering, vet bills, food, toys, a crate, etc.

So the first thing I need is money making ideas. I am not yet old enough to do real jobs (like working in public places,) and I do not want to do lawn mowing, snow shoveling, or any of those outdoor jobs! I do like babysitting, but have had trouble getting jobs. I do not have a large neighberhood with lots of kids and I do not know a lot of people with young children. So if anyone has any suggestions for either making money, or getting more babysitting jobs, please tell me!

When I do get the money to buy the puppy, it will need a name right? So I also want name ideas. I am not positive about the gender yet, but I am leaning towards a male. But I would like suggetions for both. I want something unique!

Thanks!

Name Suggestions

  • You could always name it after one of your best friends or a favorite band. Two of my animals have my friends nicknames. And Im naming my next ones Nirvana and Motley (Like Motley Crue). Cause I love those bands and they make cute names :P

  • My brother has a male doxie, and I grew up around a few others.
Do plenty of research on this breed before you purchase.
-They dig...like more than normal.
-They are very nippy, they will bite.
-Mine is dog and food aggressive, and he was properly trained.
-Potty training is the hardest in this breed, prepare to spend up to 6 months training.
-They tend to be one person dogs.
-They follow their nose more than your voice.
-Stubborn!
-Ours chews on anything he can get his mouth on.
-Food driven, will eat any and everything...ours tried eating a dead tree frog.

Anything else you can PM me. I'm at a blank right now. XD
  • I was saving up for an Irish Wolfhound, made it to $2000, and adopted a pomeranian, but the point is that I have some ideas to make money!

You could do a bake sale, make crafts that can be sold(look online for various cheap ideas), ask your parents if they need help mowing the lawn(it's not that bad when it's just yours) or doing a chore that you don't normally do(dishes?garbage?), apply for small jobs at ranches(we have horse ranches and dairy farms where I live and they will hire young teens to shovel stalls for a set amount each stall), dog walking, pet sitting, etc. I personally applied for grants and worked my butt off to get the biggest ones I could; ones that could be comfortably divided into 3 categories for school savings, and personal....but it's also a good way to destroy your social life. I also paint and took commissions to make money.

Unfortunately if you want to make fast money while underage it involves outdoor work.

Since you can't work, maybe you can make a deal with your parents about volunteer work. Some parents I know would tell kids that for every hour they donated to the community, they would get a set amount of money, or they would just have a goal like "Volunteer 60 hours and you can get an xbox" However, not all parents will see this as something worth money/a reward since it is volunteer work, but IMO it is worth it since it's a good way to gain experience and better your local community.

As for names....I just adopted a pom and named him Darwin after my life hero Charles Darwin(signature). Maybe you could name him after someone who is influential to you like a president, literary figure, scientist, artists, or humanitarian.

Had Darwin been female I would have named him Calypso, or Caly for short. I think it's a beautiful mythological name.

Hope I was of some help~
Good luck~
I'm done with VP. I'll just be around until I get all my dogs and lines placed in good hands. If you want to contact me, please do so through deviantART.

Okie. ^^I've had so many people tell me that want a dachshund and have no idea what they are capable of, then the dogs get stuck in animal shelters, my brothers dog can pull me slap across the yard because he is so strong.
The people of VP are good about research though. :D
Does the breeder have a website?
I miss when our lil guy was a baby, you'll love it. :3
  • Thanks! The one thing I was concerned about is back problems. I hear that those are quite common in the breed, is there any good way to prevent it? Yes, the breeder does have a website but I am now actually thinking about a different breeder. We aren't sure yet which breeder we are going to go with. Did you get yours from a breeder?

We haven't had any back problems in ours, and I'm surprised because he jumps up and down all the time. The one thing to prevent is regular exercise and vet checkups. And also don't give to many treats and keep a food schedule or otherwise they blow up like a balloon, especially after they get netured/spayed. Ours eats any and everything, so keep trash and other harmful things put up. :D
I unfortunately did not get ours from a breeder, he was rescued from a BYB. Yours will most likely be better behaved than ours. Once you decided on a breeder can you send the link to their website? :D
  • Oh I know, my Aunt has a mini which she just got and a standard and that one is so overweight she can't even walk up one step. They have to put ramps everywhere for her. I really hope they don't feed the new one too much. And I am pming you.

  • Congrats! As you may have guessed by my name, I have a miniature dachshund as well. I absolutely love the breed just make sure to be careful with their backs. This means they shouldn't go up and down stairs much or jump on or off objects or furniture.

I know this might not agree with what Avla said but with my dachshund

-he doesn't dig (at all)
-he doesn't nip or bite (isn't aggressive)
-I wouldn't know about potty training since when we got him he was pretty close to completely trained
-He is more my dog but he will sit with anyone in the family let anyone hold him ect.
-He is stubborn/demanding at times (at 6:10 every evening he sits in front of you and whines until you give him his dinner)
-He doesn't chew anything except his toys.
-He definetly loves food and will eat anything (for us this meant cat food had to go up, garbages had to be under cupboards, he had to go on a diet with feeding times because leaving food out all day became a weight issue for him. (which is also bad for this breed's backs)
-He isn't trained to do any tricks, we have tried but haven't gotten any where.
-He is protective (so he needs to be properly introduced to a stranger before he is comfortable around them and he doesn't like other people, dogs, or animals to be in his yard)
-He doesn't have back issues but is important to monitor!

This is based on my experience with just one dog of this breed. My point of this whole thing was that every dog is different, and has different needs, and needs to be dealt with a little differently.

As for making money are there any sports you play. You could always coach/assistant coach a younger recreational team, or become a refferee.

If you play an instrument you can offer lessons to younger kids as well.

Good luck! If you have any questions let me know!

  • I get most of my money from petsitting. I watch my neighbor's pets while they are away, and I walk dogs. You can also make money by selling old books/toys and things on ebay. Or have a garage sale!

Puppy name ideas (since I've always had more names then dogs stored up :D ):
Jersey
Flash
Happy
Yako
Scottie
Whiskey
Minor
Molly
Chevy
Kia
Romeo
Lika
Jazzy
Pheonix
Khaki

Good Luck!

  • Long haired dachshunds are awesome. They are the best behaved small dogs I think there are, but can be agressive if not spayed/neutered early.
