Adopting A Dawg?

So, my hubby kinda flipped out when he got called back into active duty knowing that I'm preggers...
Sooo, despite that we already have four, we need another, more protective dog.
xD
<a href="http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=15304867"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">This little boy is who we're planning on adopting.
He seems perfect.
Buuut, I've never had a Pitt...
Any advice?
I totally trust the dog, but any breed-specific quirks (not necessarily aggression-related)
any already-pitt-owners would wanna share with a noob?
8D

 • He's gorgeous.
From what i've seen being around pitties... They're great dogs, yes they are more aggressive (protective) by nature than other breeds. But if they're trained and raised right then they are really great dogs.
They've usually got alot of energy so having other dogs for them to play with is good. I've never had a pittie problem with my boy except when he was sick, he snapped when someone pushed him with their foot, other than that he's great.
Ooh, thank you!
Yesh, he's so my style of dog xD
I've only ever heard good things from people who actually own them.
Have you ever taken yours around horses?
We live on a farm and generally he would be separated from the horses,
But I sometimes take my other dogs up to the barn..
So I just wondered how he would react.
But that's probably more an individual dog than a breed issue?

 • You must get him. <3

 • Diablo was around the cows a couple times, but i'd say since he's young, if you start early and take him with the other dogs so that he knows they're okay, he would probably be fine

 • If you want a protection dog I suggest you get a dog that was bred for protection, i.e. Doberman, GSD, etc. I think you'll be horribly disappointed to find out that APBTs are outrageously stanger friendly in general and would be thrilled to invite that burglar inside to have tea with him.

And a little background on myself... I have been an APBT owner for five years now. She's just a pet dog and doesn't do much but she has a stellar temperament and a diehard bulldog attitude. I will be getting my second APBT, a reg conformation and weight pull dog this coming summer! I am so thrilled!

APBTs are not for everyone and I suggest that you do your homework before bringing one home. Not all of them get along well with other dogs or animals. I know my girl lives with three cats and did live with another dog before he passed. That being said, she is not too welcoming to other dogs. She's very picky about who she likes. And when adopting a puppy you may not know what his true temperament will be until he matures to an adult. I suggest getting an adult dog so you know what his dog aggression level will be. Because like I said, a puppy may take 1-3 years before he decides that he doesn't like other dogs anymore. When that happens, you'll be forced to do crate and rotate. If you truly want to adopt an APBT (and I'm very glad you decided to adopt) I think you should google Pit Bull Forum and join. It is a very rescue oriented place and everyone is very welcoming and willing to teach.

Be careful if your husband is in the military. I don't know where you guys live but if you live on base, most of them have now banned so-called aggressive dogs.

Oh and I just noticed the dog's location. If you're close, I think you should check out B-More Dog! They are amazing people!

That's all for now, I may think of more later.
Ahh, thank you!!
Yeah, we live semi-close to the area.
I'll check it out :)
But we don't live on the base...
Since we live on domestic territory anyway.
I've taken my dogs to visit the pup in the shelter and they're letting us bring him home for a sort of "trial" if you will.
I understand temperament may change, but I've actually met the previous owner and the way she explained how she raised him, I think he'll end up being a trusty boy.
I have done plenty of homework, but it always seems that pitt sites are either pro or con biased.
I thought owners could give me the real scoop on what it's like to live with one.
I'll see if I can locate this forum.
;D
I really don't want a specifically "protection" dog, my husband would just be more comfortable with us having an intimidating looking dog xD
Yeah, he thinks that'll work.
But I'm not objecting to having another dog. :3
