I Wanna Bird EDITED-Budgie/Parakeet Help?

edited November 2009 in General Discussion
EDIT!!!

OK. Well, after doing some research I found that I think I want a budgie/parakeet. I'm doing a lot of research, and don't plan on getting one for a few months. (The plan is to convince my parents to get me one for my birthday.)

Anyways, I can go on the internet and read books, but I was looking for some opinions and advice about budgies. I want to train it to perch on my finger/shoulder, and this doesn't seen too hard or too easy by what I've been reading, so any tips would be greatly appreciated!

 • I had a lovebird awhile ago named Lola. She barely made a sound and her cage wasn't too big. It was able to fit on my nightstand. She used to follow my cat around like she was her mom. Very cute. I never got much of a chance to teach her anything because she passed before she was a year old. We have no idea how this happened considering she had food, water, didn't seem sick, or anything else. We walked in from being outside for around 2hrs and she was laying at the bottom of the cage. But anyways, that type of bird, in my opion, make great pets.

My grandma has a pocket parrot. Im not sure on their cost or anything, but those can be trained to talk as well. I don't know much on behavior and other animals though.

 • I had a parakeet, it died when I was 5 though. Not sure how.

Birds are very chatty (the ones I've been around), every bird is different so you never know what you will get as with every animal.
I like doves, my friend has about 4 and one just had a baby a few months ago. :3

 • Parrots are intelligent birds on the whole and need a lot of attention. If you're giving away a bunny because you don't have enough time, you won't have enough time for a parrot. Remember too, they tend to have long lifespans.

Thank you, I will consider that. But it's not exactly that I don't have enough time, it's different. Because of the bunny living outdoors, and the way my yard is set up, there really isn't much of a place for the bunny to exercise or play, so I'm just thinking that it may be best if it was placed in a home where it could live indoors, closer to the people and everything, because he hasn't gotten much socialization. But thank you for the advice.

 • I've got a budgie :) A friend of mine gave me him, as she breeds budgies and couldn't sell them easily >.< Anywho, my feather brain:

<img src="http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h11/Jellybeanjoe/Real pets/Tori.jpg" alt="http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h11/Jellybeanjoe/Real pets/Tori.jpg" class="bb-image" />

He's got a cage in my room. Since I'm not in my room all the time, and its not the most busy part of the house, I've got a radio going all day.

If you want to be able to train yours to talk (if/when you get it that is xD) then I suggest getting a male. Budgies are easy to determine gender when older, though it can be a bit blurry when they are younger. Ideally get a young bird, as it will be easier to hand train them, and get a male, as they tend to be the more talkative gender. You'll have to be very consistant in lessons on speaking though. I wasn't. Instead my budgie learnt to imitate my whistle, and he does a very good bell imitation.

As you want to hand train your bird, and get him bonding with you, do not put a mirror in the cage. He'll think its another budgie and won't bother bonding with you as much. I gave my budgie bell orientated toys instead . . . thus why he can do a very good bell imitation LOL

I also suggest starting on veggies and fruit as soon as possible after getting your bird. I didn't and now my boy refuses to even look at them :|

Thats just a few things off the top of my head :P I do adore my budgie . . . he keeps my thoroughly entertained :D
 • Thank you so much. Yes, I heard about the mirror thing. I hope I can get one!
