Makes me wonder

edited November 2009 in General Discussion
Me and my brother where talking the other day and it made me think - robot pets. :O

With all the new technology nowadays we can create "robots"

Such as:
<img src="http://i34.tinypic.com/2ldyofa.jpg"; alt="http://i34.tinypic.com/2ldyofa.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

<img src="http://i35.tinypic.com/2yw7srt.jpg"; alt="http://i35.tinypic.com/2yw7srt.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

<img src="http://i37.tinypic.com/2n19w1y.jpg"; alt="http://i37.tinypic.com/2n19w1y.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

Has anyone else had the thought of "robo pets" being in a higher demand than RL pets.
I don't know if it will actually happen.
But, these "pets" are safer for children, people who suffer from allergies, you can turn it off when you want to, it doesn't require "real care", etc. and as technology excels - could these "pets" become "smarter" - more like a real animal?
It's quite sad actually, to think what the future holds for domesticated animals. And it makes me wonder if there would be an increase or decrease in the pet population...along with shelters going out of business. Although, there is a lot you can't receive from a toy - there could be a possibility.
Just a thought I wanted to share with everyone.
What does everyone else think?

  • Surrogate pets?
hmm that's definately something to think about,
i've never thought of it that way...
I think i'll keep my boys, i don't think some robot is going to attack a robber >.<

  • I think its sad to know what the world is coming to but also extremely interesting so i have mixed feelings

    Looking for upgrade.
  • I would never want a robot pet over a real pet. Just the way I am. A robot can't express true love and devotion cause its a robot. A animal usually becomes your best friend. And you love them. Would be kinda hard to truly love a robot that has no true feelings.

Agreed with Triss, but there are those who would rather a fake pet - because they are too lazy. xD
  • I know and that makes me sad. But I think that if they are too lazy to take care of a pet then they don't deserve them. Animals need love and affection just like we do.

  • And that's why I think thats why these pets are made and every little kid wants a puppy, so hey why not get them biscuit the golden retriever robot. >.>
  • Nah.. I dont think they will be an any higher demand then they are now. Robo pets would be missing too many things, like someone said love, things like them being unpredictable, and the overall actions of pets. Is the robo dog able to learn tricks at the pace of a normal dog but needs consistency like a normal dog? What qualities would they get?

Nahh if people can't take care of a pet.. then they should get it. Or if you want minimum care, just get a fish or something.

  • I am thinking as technology grows - there could be a possibility that the robo pets could learn more as more is created.
And even if they can't love - they won't die, just pop a new battery in.
You wouldn't have to experience death of a pet ever again.

-I'm not for it. xD I'm thinking as someone who would be.-

EDIT: get this! I just found it!!!! :O

Robotic pets have the potential to be useful in many ways. Some robopets are being used to remind the elderly to take their medication. In Japan, robot pets are being used as companions.
  • I don't think these robots will have such a high demand they win over real animals, but I do think they could get more popular as they get more sophisticated.

These robots may be fun to play with for a little while, but they don't give you love, can't go for a jog with you, most can't fetch a ball, they can't actually learn tricks even though some may be programed to do tricks, all together, they aren't nearly as fun as a real pet.

But I could see someone wanting one that can't have a real pet due to living in an apartment, allergies, etc.

  • I would always choose I live pet over a robo pet. I mean you'd look pretty silly dragging your robo dog down the street on a leash!

But I have one of those Kota and friends robot dinosaurs. Thery're pretty amazing! I told everyone I bought it for my two year old cousin who loves dinosaurs, but really its for me, cause I love them too xD I only like it cause its not like Ill ever have a real dinosaur for a pet :p

  • Only thing robo pets are good for is people who cant have a dog/cat (people with allergies, children who dont know responsibility yet, etc.)

Dogs are companions, and no robot is going to express the true relationship people have with their real dogs/cats/etc.

I don't think I could see myself running agility with a robotic dog :lol: Not to mention, it would come ready trained pretty much (of course, i think that there -are- some that you have to -train- though its not what I'd like to call training)

It would be rather boring. Everyone would have the same pet as someone else pretty much.
    All good things must come to an end. All endings will begin new good things.
