How much is that Puppy in the Window? - Pet Stores

edited October 2009 in Vent
Ok. You think pet stores are sweet little places where animals are cared for and get to be played with?

The dogs, and cats sit in cages where they have to look their possitivley cutest, and if there not sold in 3 monthes and they arn't small babies anymore they continue sitting in the glass cage. If the dog isn't blessed with a soft coat, or has to plain colors, if a kitten is to shy or nips you to much they sit in there cage. They wait and wait and wait. And before long their adults and they are moved to the back of the store to make room for new puppies and kittens. They grow old, and soon 9 monthes have past, not even a year but the pet dosen't look like a baby even though it still is. So what to do with it? All it does is take up cage space for new, younger and smaller animals. All that big money waster does is eat, we could be making about a dollar more if that mutt wasn't here wasting our resorces. Sorry sweetie, you have to be go. We can't keep you here. So looks like your life is cut short. Your being put down, it's kind of your fault little guy you nip to much, your too hyper, you arn't beutiful, you have a weird tail, your eyes are differnet colors, your fur isn't soft, I don't like your nose. You know little animal, there are many things wrong with you, no one bought you. Sorry little guy.

All I have to say is, I HATEEE pets tores. I went to one today, All I saw were dogs and cats to depressed to move, or wag their little tails or lick the glass. I saw a very very big Bull dog and a beutiful sheepdog, and I bent down to look at them and all you see back is big watery sad eyes. I think it's wrong those poor animals get uthinized(sp?) if they get to old for the store. It makes me very upset. I've even heard that some animals gone insaine from being in a small cage, and you know how whenever you go there almost every animal is a sleep? Humans sleep when they are depressed, I wouldn't be surprized if that's what those animals are doing.

All I'm saying is it makes me very sad.

 • I didn't think the euthanized them. o.o

Anyways, I'm sure they don't like being in the cages or constantly handled by people. Though, the sleep thing I don't think is from depression. Puppies and kittens need a lot more sleep than their older counter parts. It's like a human baby. If anything, I think they are tired from being handled or having the glass poked at.

We got our one dog from a pet store and we say we rescued her from there. Some don't give good information on the breeds in attempt to sell. Ours is a border collie and if we hadn't gotten her, some family with no knowledge of them and how hyper they are, would have gotten her and eventually she'd end up in a shelter. I don't think they are the best places and I do agree they try to emphasize the cute factor of some. When my mom had been looking at our dog then, she asked a question on her. The sales lady disappeaed and then came back with the dog in her arms saying "oh she wanted to see youu!" Which is just another sneaky way to try and tempt the potential buyer.

Its also not healthy for them to leave bunnies, ferrets, and small rodents in areas where the top is open so people can pet them. Whenever I go to the animal shelter, they tell everyone that comes in the animal areas to sanitize their hands before touching another animal.

This also reminds me..there is this poor tortoise that they let loose in the store and it just walks around by peoples feet. They have balloons tied around its shell. I guess its so people realize he's there and not step on him, but also to make it seem more fun? If that makes sense.

Exactly Tarn. With the ferrets and rabbits and all that people pick them up and then go touch other animals, and sicknesses could be carried around the store. And with the Lady trying to hand your mom a puppy, last year we went to a petstore to see if we could get a kitten for my brother and this man who worked there saw me making kissy faces at a beutiful female labrador and before you know it he had me holding it and when I told him I lived in an apartment and I didn't think my mom would want a large dog like a labrador the responce I got back made me very upset with the lack of care for the animal's needs. He said, "OH That's COMPLETLY alright!! This dog won't get That big and she's very calm and she'll be PERFECT for an apartment!!!"....if you know diddley about dogs you know a Labrador Retriever grows pretty big and needs alot of exersize. This man tried to sell a dog to a home that wouldn't be good for her. I really feel like it is all about money.

And with the tortise thing, that's very sad. 3:> They have turtles at the pet store and I almost got into a huge fight with this girl who was tipping them off the rocks they were sitting on and trying to keep them under the water.
I got my cat from a breeder, might as well have gotten him from a Puppy/Kitty mill. They seemed like nice people, but making money in all the wrong ways. When we got him he wasn't even weened off him mother at 8 weeks. We had to teach him to drink water.

Animal treatment needs relooking around here.

That happened to me as well. We bought a kitten and called it Sukie when I was about 5. She clawed everyone. We bought her from a breeder, and was told she was a pedigree, and 12 weeks old. I wasnt allowed to hold her. We only kept her for 3 days. Turned out she was half scottish wild cat, and was onyl 7 weeks old. About 6 months later we got another cat, Teddy. (he passed almost two years ago) He was a pedigree persian. We got a certificate to prove it, as well as vet cards ect. The breeder came around twice to see if our house was safe, (once with a appointment, once without) to see if it suited for him before letting us buy him. The difference between him and Sukie was amazing, he didnt claw, he was friendly and he happily played with all the toys we bought him. Shows the difference between good and bad breeders. We dont have many pet stores that sell puppies and kittens where I live. And the once that does, the pups and kittens are bred by the owners and live in the flat upstairs. The other large pet shops only sell things like birds, rabbits, mice, gerbils, fish ect. There is hand sanitizer everywhere, and you cant even pet the animals, the only ones with open tops are rabbits, and these have a 4 and a half foot fence around them.. and there is people keeping an eye on people.. just goes to show..

I'm glad where you live they're carfull with there animals. That should be a law, it's disgusting what happens to helpless animals.

And with the breeders, it really does show good breeders and bad ones. My cat "Champ" is a full tabby and we got him exactly at 8 weeks, and besides the fact that we had to wean him the first soild "food" he attempted to eat was Cat litter!! He hadn't been introduced to food at all! It was sad when we drove him home for the first time he panted alot so we got him a water bottle. xDD He dosen't have behavior issues but the other kittens seemed mean or wouldn't have anything to do with you, my Champers came right up and sat in my lap. But the owner didn't seem to care who bought the cat I could have said "Do they taste good?" and she probley would have said "OH YES! Just like chicken." You know you got your cat from a good breeder if they make sure their kitten they're giving away is in a safe home. C:

 • Uh, don't even get me started on petstores!

OK, I there are some petstores that are great. I'm talking about the ones that don't have dogs and cats. They have reptiles, birds, rodents, fish, small animals that don't need as much attention as dogs and cats. (And I am not in any way saying that those animals don't need attention, I'm just saying they're a little bit different then dogs and cats.)

Anyways, one of the best petstores I've ever been to is Petco. (At least I'm pretty sure that's what it was....) There, they didn't have dogs or cats. They knew a lot about the animals, and they didn't try to push sales before people knew a lot about the animals they wree getting. I went there with my friend once to look at birds because she was thinking about getting one. We were looking at this great bird, and the lady to time to explain that they are pretty noisy. (While in some petshops they wouldn't mention any faults of the animal.) She also reccomended adopting an older bird, because this one needed someone willing to train it because it had some behavior problems. They really encourage adoption in that store, they have signs all over telling people about adoption.

But, back to the vent part of this. There aren't many petstores where I live with dogs and puppies, except for this one at the mall. They've got all these tiny, cute little odd mixes that they try to sell for a fortune. Some cockapoo-papillon-pomeranian mix that I've never even heard of going for like 700 bucks!

They keep the less adoptable ones (Like Chibbers said, older, not as good looking ones) way in the back in small cages where they just sit. Lonely. So, if someone did buy them, they probably wouldn't be very well socialized, and they might end up in a shelter. Then, the cutest, youngest ones, they keep out in pens that look like rabbit cages. You know, with the open tops so people can pet them, floor covered in newspapers and shavings, wire seperating them from the other cages. Everybody can pet them, and like you guys said, who knows what germs they're spreading from puppy to puppy!

I mean, these puppies look like they were randomly picked up off the street or something. They're in pretty good condition, but their breeds....They try to make it sound like they're some fancy cross breed, but really, they're just overpriced, tiny little mutts. I mean, I love mutts, but people that know nothing about these breeds are gonna go in there and think they're cute and fancy, spend tons of money on them, and then give them away because they have no clue how to take care of them!

Uh, that irks me. :x

OK, I'll end this here, sorry it was so long...

I went to a mall not around here, I was taken there and we thought it was a baby store because there were baby cribs and I went in and I saw PUPPIES in the baby cribs which were cages ment to look like baby cribs and I saw in the way back in unfancey shabby cages were dogs about 4 monthes looking, and they were put away for looking older than they actually were. And I possitivley hate when people who know nothing about breeds seem to want to flaunt their 800$ rat with behavioral issues because it's a cockadoodle. I don't think people understand anything that has a "doodle" in it's name is just a MUTT. It's not fancey, it's not some rare exotic creature, if you tried to get that thing in a dog club they'd probley laugh right in your face. Like you said mutts are sweet and just as good as any dog, but how can a pet store attempt to sell you one for 800$ when you could go to any junk yard and find a mutt walking around and take that thing with the same behavioral issues home for free! xD And don't worry, I like to hear opinions on this topic. • Just a few days ago I went to Petland and the puppies where so weak and sick they where shaking, their eyes had discharge, etc.
But, there also "pet stores" such as Petco, that I really like-they support animal shelters(Actually, the human society was there today) and only sell reptiles, rodents, fish, and birds.
And since in my small area there are rarely reptiles let alone breeders-I go there to get my reptile supplies/reptiles.
 • It is really strange that you can buy a living thing in a store. Gross actually.

I don't support pet stores that have mammals living in them. That means I do not buy products from them, either. The owner of the store clearly doesn't know much about puppy mills or backyard breeders, because if they did, they would never receive these animals for their store.

Imho, if you can't resist puppies in a pet store just do not go in there. Buying a puppy in a pet store just makes room for another one that's going to go to the "wrong owner" or be euthanized or killed like some pet shops do.

Take yourself to the SPCA instead.

I know it's hard to think about pet store animals but if you keep humanizing their feelings it'll be even harder. Thankfully they don't know you're going to euthanize them and thankfully they don't understand English. You can say, "Your nose was too short and your fur was too plain," and you might as well be speaking ancient Albanian- they don't know.
