I HAVE to ask this

edited October 2009 in General Discussion
Okay, on another forum that I rarely go on -people...-
Anyways, there was a debate as to if a domesticated animal could fully survive out in the wild, and form a pack.
Okay, there is a difference between a city setting and a wild setting.
Do you think it's possible that if we let all our dogs lose out in the WILD (not city/town/etc.) that they could fully function and find a way to survive as a pack? Why or why not?

 • hmmm.....this is a hard one.

I would say no, because I know my doggie will starve or get killed by a huge animal if I were to let him loose into the wild.

 • lol. Thank you! xDD
I tried pointing out the fact that they are domesticated for a reason, and I also said that if they starve in the city where there is food, people, etc. what makes them think they can live in the wild.
They also said blind animals could live in the wild. O.o
Can't see=Can't hunt
 • My dog wouldnt run away/go into the wild if we put her there.... shes extreemly intelligent tho cause well if we went and put her somewhere she'd find her way home... We took her to a stud about 15minutes away from us (we live in the suburbs of a city) and she was in an 6ft fence...

She climbed it got out found her way home jumped on the garbage bin and jumped back into our yard over our 6ft fence... we were like O.O cause no one could have just picked her up and droped her home when she was wandering the streets cause shes aggressive towards people she doesnt know trying to touch her... And shes very loyal..

So in conclusion she could not survive in the wild cause she'd just come back home xD
 • Wow. No. Never.

 • I honestly think it depends on the animal(s). There are dogs I've known who I think would survive and thrive in the wild, while others would never make it.

My dog now, though a larger dog, would never make it. He hasn't the instincts to do it. Heck, he's shared his feed dish with wild possums.

One of the dogs I had a few years back would have made it. She brought home kills a few times, a coon, rabbits and even managed to kill a skunk once.

Would all animals survive, not at all. But a portion of them would. If they were completely domesticated, there wouldn't be instances of dogs having to be put down for aggression and there wouldn't be wild dog packs any where.

 • I agree with Alabama on the first thing but i think my dogs could make it theyre a golden Retriever and a lab but they hunt and love to catch ducks and gophers they are pretty fast and can catch a lot of things lol i think if you made a dog go out it would depend on its instincs and survive but it might take a while

 • Good point, Alabama.

I know my cats could survive the wild because they all hunt. xD
But, dogs are more dependent so I can see where most of them wouldn't be able to thrive even if they are descendants from wolves.
And I still don't get why the heck they would say a special needs animal would be able to survive. O.o Because I have 3 special needs animals and I know good and well they wouldn't make it lol.
 • I agree with Alabama.

One of my dogs would never make it, she's scared of kittens, so she'd never be able to hunt, and she will only take her water from the small water bowl in our kitchen rather than the large one in our laundry room, so she wouldn't survive.

My other one might make it, she's killed a mole, 2 squirrels, about 5 mice, and a bunny before. Plus she's much more athletic then my other dog....

Yep, I think that it all depends on the personality and physical characterstics of the animal, but I'd never put one of my pets out in the wild anyway, they need love and attention! :D

 • Yep, however, do our pets know mentally actually how to hunt like say, a wolf? And eat it? Or does it happen to come across it and play with it until it's dead?
Reminds me of animal planet, like on an animal cops show how all the animals are skin and bones...I'm surprised that no one doesn't even toss scraps to them.
 • Hmm, that's a good question. Well, when my one dog that wouldn't hurt a flee was a puppy, she killed a baby bird that had fallen out of the nest, but I don't think she was hunting...she didn't know any better.

On the other hand, one of my dogs loves to hunt. She'll sit for hours at the base of some tree she saw a squirrel run up, waiting for it to come down, and I'm sure she'd eat an animal she kills if we don't catch her...

 • Usually it's common in most hound/terrier/retriever breeds to hunt, I can see that. When I start into my Animal Behavior College, that will be a question I will ask. xD
