Uh, Have You Ever Tried it?

edited September 2009 in Vent
OK, well, one of my friends and I were walking back from gym class, chatting.

I told her that I was not good at sports, accept for horse back riding.

Her reply? "Well, it's kinda more of a sport for the horse, all you do is sit there." :x

I was like "Um, excuse me?"

For those of you that ride, you'll know that you do not just sit there.

You have to give the horse commands, post while you trot, which takes leg strength, do 2-point when you jump, which takes balance, and more.

I recently got back into horse back riding, and my legs ached for 3 days after doing a 1 hour lesson.

Horse back riding is not just sitting in a saddle while the horse does all the work!

Gosh, people annoy me sometimes. Sorry for the lame vent.

But seriously, is there anyone out there that has tried riding that can honestly say it's not a sport? All you do is sit there?

  • Well, now that I have a barn I can ride at as long as we take turns with his competition horse. I think I can say that it's not just a sport. o.O

It's a super duper extreme sport. :3 Mi upper body is really sore from riding yesterday. I had mi first fall coz the guy I went with didn't remember to tighten the girth before I got on after we walked his gelding up to the round pen. x.x I had to jump/fall off to avoid mi head being spread across the fence around the pen. >.< but that's a little off topic. xD

But yeah, I hate when people do that. and when they've been on one calm school/trail horse and think they're an expert. x.x I knew for a fact that riding Haney's (mi nickname for the guy I went riding with) comp horse was going to be harder than sitting on the back of a trail horse, even though I still wasn't prepared for it exactly. His horse was a hell of alot faster, though that was mostly because he's only about 14.2 hands and he competes in barrels and such. But, again, off topic. x.x

And just a little more spam. xD I'm sitting here on mi computer looking at horses for sale. lmao. and I know I'm not going to be able to get one. -.-
I need a few hundred bucks and a steady budget, along with hopefully being able to work at the barn to pay for board.

  • MOST definitally not!
i get i fights with people over this topic..
i tell them that hanging on to the back of
a 1500 lb animal thats going over 30 mph
while its making the sharpest turns in the
animal kingdom isnt as easy as it looks.
ESPECIALLY when they get hairbrained
and decide that you dont know what your talkin
about and you have to wrestle them over dominence.
Id just LOVE to get someone on our wild mare
and see how easy it is for them
  • Twas quite funny after the last Olympics. A radio presenter was on the radio going on and on about how the riders did absolutely nothing in Dressage, that it was all the horse's ;)

Naturally it caused outrage.

So the Dressage riders challenged the radio presenter with an hour long riding lesson.

Needless to say it was harder than he thought  He never went faster than a trot.

He never really took back his comments, however he didn't keep going on and on after the riding lesson

I usually don't even put the effort into telling people off.
But another point to the fact that the rider not only controls the horse, they also earn the respect of it too. When you go to play soccer, the ball isn't going to fight back. lmao

Haha Jellyfish, I saw the big uproar that caused on VHR. xD

  • Horsebackriding is not just about sitting on a horse, it is about creating a bond so strong with an amazing and beautiful creature that eventually learns to love you so unconditionally that it will lug you around in the rain on it's back because it knows it makes you happy.

wow, my words are inspiring. xD Feel free to use that for banners, etc. xD Joking, joking.

OMG, pm me that website.

Pepper, that brought tears to my eyes. Lol, just kidding, but that is true. :)

Yesterday I had a very hard lesson. Only my second lesson since I quit two years ago, but it involved some basic jumping, sitting trot, posting trot, canter (Which, by the way, was a very fast canter. I though I was going to fly out of the saddle and get trampled by the horse.)

My feet, my legs, my fingers, my arms, and my back were sore.

That just proves that horse back riding is a challenging sport both physically and mentally.

mi legs felt fine after I rode Toby, mi hands and upper body was killing me though. xD I was holding onto the rope he uses for reins and the saddle horn for mi life. lmao.
And I know what you mean about the very fast canter. o.o Toby's slow canter is like a gallop for the other horses I've ridden. x.x But once you know how to position yourself it's alot less "scary" or such because you get your balance on a horse back.

Lol, I was more focused on staying on his back then sitting in right position.

But, hopefully I'll learn more. My instructor says I need to work on my half halts so I can slow them down without stopping them.

  • there's a name for slowing a horse down to a slower gait but not stopping? o.O I didn't know that. xD I need to work on those too. Toby's command for that is "easy" but I don't think mi voice is as deep as Andrew's so he doesn't want to listen when I say it. xD
And he has to bridle or bit. o.o
    az7051.jpg<3
  • Yeah. It's when you pull a little with each hand one at a time to slow em down. Or at least that's what my instructor said.

  • oh..I wouldn't be able to do that. xD
    az7051.jpg<3
  • Oh. What I'm mad about it is that I'm not gonna be able to ride for two weeks. I've got something going on next Friday and the Friday after that. :(

  • aww..I have taekwondo on mondays wednesdays and fridays every week until I finally get mi black belt. which is gonna probably take a whole other year. x.x
and mi friends phone is off, so I can't talk to him to see if he's still going to the barn to ride. D;

  • To slow them down?
Best method if you don't quite have the control with your seat yet is the check and release.

You pull back slightly on the reins, or harder if needed, but not hard enough that they stop,
and as soon as they slow down give them a looser rein as a reward.

Also, watch your breathing.
I know sometimes when people do this they tend to hold their breath, but that builds tension, making the horse go fast.
So exhale while you do this too.

And as for cantering, if you feel that unbalanced, then I don't agree with instructors who let students canter without having developed the proper seat yet.
Oh well though, not my decision. xD
It's not that I don't have the proper seat, it's that it was my first time cantering and the pssed of my horses canter was kind of startling for the first time.

And besides, my instructor is great, I know she wouldn't let me do anything she didn't think I could handle. She takes wonderful care of her horses, and gives lots of one on one attention during the lessons. I've learned a ton from her in short 2 short lessons.

• Uh, I know.

Toes up, heels down, post through your knees, move your hands forward, shorten the rains, change your diagonal, move your legs back, and on and on and on.

But, it's fun. Challenging, but fun. It just really makes me mad when people say that it's not a sport, all you do is sit in a saddle, the horse is the only one working, blah blah blah.
