Time to go?

edited September 2009 in Vent
I have been preparing myself for the worse this pass month, my eldest dog is 11. And I am afriad there is not much time left for her.
She went blind this summer, and now she is showing signs of arthritis.
She use to be very active the beginning of last month, but the pass week she has done nothing but sleep.
And usually when I say "want a treat?" they all come rushing in for a dog treat, but she countinued to lay there until the rest of the dogs got their treat.
My mom first notice her hip problems about three weeks ago, so I kept a close eye on her and haven't noticed anything major until this week.
I learned about a few dog massages and I give them to her as often as possible.
I don't plan on taking her with me when I move out becuase that will be a large amount of stress on her and if she where to die I would rather my family say goodbye.
I haven't experienced many animal deaths so it has been a strain on me.
How does one let go of a dog they have had for 11 years?

 • Aw I'm sorry. You just have to remember that if she does die, at least she won't be suffering. I know it can be hard. :(

 • "How does one let go of a dog they have had for 11 years?"

That is definitely a hard question to answer.
The last dog I had lost, I've had for 12 years...and I asked myself that same question.
I never thought I could let go and move on...but over time it went away on its own.
I still mourn and think of the good times I had with him and it just keeps a smile on my face knowing he lived a happy and wonderful life.

I hope you get through this alright and there isn't too much pain and hardship.
The best of luck,

Gak~
<3

 • poor Lava. It must be so hard. But, i watched a vet problem a while back, and there was a section on acupuncture. It was a 12 year old dog with althritus anmd hip problems, too. Maybe you should look into it? It could give her some pain relief. sorry about my spelling xD

 • Thanks guys! :D She actually played with the pups some today and came for treats.
I actually found this website that was linked from the AKC website and I came across this article.
<a href="http://www.webvet.com/main/article?id=2236"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.webvet.com/main/article?id=2236

It will be costly.
But, if she shows signs of it getting any worse I'm willing to scrap some cash up for it.
