True or...not so much?

Okay, so there has been a lot in the vent section about dog training.
Well, I noticed some people mentioned that food schedules and eating before your dog sets in stone that you are leader.
Does anyone believe that this works on all dogs?
We leave food down for our dogs all through out the day. They have NEVER had a domanace issue with us, and our dogs will even watch us eat and then after we are done eating they go and eat. XD
Of course, shelter animals come from bad backgrounds but considering my dogs have proved this method wrong and that a dog knows who its master is, I believe that it can go both ways. :p

  • I don't believe it completely.....My family and I would all be eating at the table or at the living room and sometimes we throw some scraps of food to my dog. When my dog is asleep, and we are all eating at the table, i ask my mom, "should I put some food in his bowl?" My mom is like, "No he's not hungry, he would come to us or sit in front of his bowl if he's hungry" And he does the same thing too with water. When he runs out of water, he will either tap the bowl with his paw, bark softly, or sit in front of his water bowl to get our attention when he's thirsty and is out of water. So in a way he's also training us hahaha Nobody thought him that.

  • Lmao. I wish my pups did that. :p
My dad makes me refill the bowls constantly, even if it's already over flowing, not like they eat every five seconds. XD
One of my dogs will pick up her water bowl and carry it around. lol. x3
  • hahahaha wow!! my dad is kind of like that too, if he see's like the water bowl under half empty he would be like, "Your dog is going to need more water so fill it up"

Awwww....how cute!!! ^_^

  • I've always left food in the dogs' bowls. It's always full. Every morning I fill it up to the top. They eat it when they get hungry and only when they get hungry.
I think some people suggested that "method" to Dusty for her dog, Kiara, because Kiara likes to eat constantly. So if she left the food down for whenever she got hungry, Kiara would probably just gobble it up like there was no tomorrow meanwhile Dusty would have to keep refilling the bowl over and over each day while Kiara gets impossibly fat. o_O
I didn't think it was about a dominance thing at all.
Although I do believe a schedule with timing is good, it's not... required, I guess.
My dogs get scraps, but only if they're not begging. If they sit there and stare at us we say, "Don't beg." They then walk away, lie down somewhere, and fall asleep. I praise that behavior with a treat/some scraps AFTER we're done eating. Then it shows the dogs that they won't get food from begging, they will get food for behaving. I guess. I don't know. xD They seem to do well with it anyways.

Some people say its not good to leave the food or water bowl full.....I think that is good so they learn boundaries and when to stop eating or drinking. with puppies you need a scheduled feed and water so they are easier to potty train and not so many accidents occur. But thats just me.

  • It was suggested in that thread to. x3
And that's why I said "Of course, shelter animals come from bad backgrounds" ;D

So, of course I would recomend doing that with a shelter dog until they get over their bad habbits.

It seems like my dogs never eat, thier bowl is always full...I think they have been eating the cat food...XD
  • I think they advised that to Dusty because her dog was showing dominance. You need to make a show of the sorts to show the dog it's only eating it because you're letting the dog do so. It's YOUR food. You're just sharing.
My dog Bella's food and water is always full. Because she refused to eat when we first got her I had to hand feed her and she now eats occasionally out of it. If I were to take it away and put it back down she wouldn't go and eat it. *shrugs* She gets wet food in the morning because she gets medicine in it. If a dog has dominance issues, sure, go for it. It can't hurt.

We feed our puppies a special food brand that keeps them from going to the bathroom so much, the vet gave us a free bag. x3
They only pee when they get excited, but that's know in most weenie dogs. :p

On the side of "boundaries" our dogs ONLY eat when they are hungry, they don't over eat.
  • We feed our dogs twice a day, but they eat it all at once, so putting it out all day and keep refilling it wouldn't be an option for us.

I think you only need to eat before your dogs if they have dominance problems, and our dogs don't.

  • However we do make them sit and wait for there food until we say okay, which helps them learn that we are in charge and they eat when we say so.

  • Yeah we feed our dogs twice a day too, but we can't really leave food out all the time cause we have beagles and they are VERY glutinous so they would just eat it all. Same with our lab too.
"If I could go back in time, wouldn't change a damn thing in my life. Love the dumb things we do when we're young, but the best is yet to come."
  • The one problem we have come across is that the dogs know their feeding schedule, and when it's around that time that jump around and beg and do this weird low holwling noise.

  • Yeah, we don't have a a dominence issue with our dogs.
When we first put our new pup on a schedule he always acted like he was starving. xO Now that he's potty trained we leave the food down and he doesn't eat as much as when we had him on a schedule. O.o
  • With are dogs theres no problem with dominace.
we leave the food down all day.
They sleep while we eat then they eat.
and the little one started the eating after we eat.
and my dogs never had potty training issues.
But i think its the line they came from.
Cause we got 'em from are neighbors and they all are related.
Well except for the lab cause he isnt a boxer XD

  • XD
We got ours from breeders to.
I think puppies that come from breeders are easiest to potty train because of the selective breeding that is involved.
  • Oh
and some Dachshunds do have the little pee wiggle.
My uncles dogs do that alot.
Most of the time
