Breeds of Dogs that are... **Found the right puppy!

Well, Maggie is really getting on everyone's nerves because she's not what we were looking for. ;_; I don't want to give her up, but my parents made the final decision today. We're taking her back and telling the pound all the flaws she has that they didn't tell us. D; I'm upset. I feel bad for Maggie... she's a brat but she doesn't deserve to not be in a home. Hopefully she gets adopted to a couple (she isn't fond of us kids) who has the time, backyard and money to give her the perfect life. A couple that has no other dogs and perhaps little visitors...

My mom said we should look around for a WHILE since it'll be hard to give Maggie back. After we do that, we won't be able to get a dog for quite a bit - for SURE. It's going to be really hard and sad to give Maggie back. You can get attatched to a dog you've had for only two weeks! ;__;

So. This time, we don't want to make even the slighest mistake in adopting/buying a dog. If we can't find one in the pound that suits what we're looking for, we'll ask around and check the ads in the newspaper.

I've looked at English Bulldog puppies, German Shepherd puppies, Labrador Retriever puppies, and Cane Corso puppies. I don't want any of those. Other than the bulldogs, all those dogs are too big. And I know about Bulldogs - I don't want one. I'm not prepared to handle one.

There were also small Pit mixed puppies at the pound. I don't one one of those either. First of all; they don't know the second/third/fourth (however many mixes the pups have) breeds and have no clue what size they'll get. Well, I want a small dog. Already got two bigs ones and I want a little one for myself...

I'm looking for a dog that:

- forgot to add this: Energetic!!! Likes running and plenty of walks!
- is naturally friendly
- isn't too dominant
- is small (not tiny/toy or teacup)
- gets along WELL with other dogs
- has no problems with kids
- isn't too hard to train, I'm up to a slight challenge though
- might be good for agility (doesn't have to be though)
*Note; I'd get a big dog but the 'rents are against it since we already have two big ones. I do love big dogs a lot more though <3

Is there a breed/mix out there like this? I can't find one like this yet. D;
BTW, I live in a really small town, so rare breeds aren't likely to be found here... and we aren't willing to pay a fee to get one transported unfortunately.

Breeds I would be interested in if I could find any in my town:
Basset Hounds (need to do more research)
Beagles (need more info)
Jack Russells (finished researching)
Parson Russells (finished researching)
Pugs (perhaps.. need more info xD)
Corgis (more info needed)
Whippet/Italian Greyhound (need more info)
& more, but can't remember

Breeds I have found in my town (feel free to tell me about them):
Cane Corsos (don't want one)
German Shepherds (can't have one)
Labradors (can't have one)
Bulldogs (can't handle one)
Great Pyrenese (ooh, loove <3)
Siberian Huskies (can't handle one)
Border Collies (not often)
Yorkshire Terriers (don't want one)
Chihuahua (not totally interested)
& more, but can't remember.

Pwease help me find the perfect puppy/dog <3 =D

ALSO, NEW QUESTION:
I was wondering what your thoughts on your own female/male dogs are. I don't know which gender to get! I was thinking female, but then I've always had more luck with male dogs in my life. xD My male is obedient & calm, my female is hyper and disobedient - and has more aggression (but that doesn't matter with her gender, it's just how we didn't socialize her as a pup). So, I was insisting on getting a male with my parents... but they don't know either. It'd be beneficial in the long run - no close-calls or attacks from my female if I got another female. She gets along better with males.

So, what are your thoughts? What are your experiences? Have your males or females proven to be better?

(I know it all depends on the dog's training and personality, too.)

  • Mine hasn't had any breathing problems.
He does snore sometimes. Not horribly loud though. Its a thing thats makes us laugh late at night when we are watching tv. xD

  • Snoring isn't a big deal, I was just wondering. xD
Good! No breathing problems =D
I've seen quite a few pugs around town, I bet I could find a breeder if I want one.
Thanks, Zoe, I'll add them to my list. =P

  • beagles and bassets are hard to train I have a beagle and she is extremely stubborn and not good with kids either but that could be different if you get it as a puppy.

I would recommend a cavalier or a cross with one they are great if you raise them right mine we got at 6 months and have had a very hard time reversing her issues. So all I can say is get it early and you wont have problems.
  • Cavaliers are too expensive here. x_X Around... $1200 a pup I think.
Plus, I'm not into many Spaniels. Some I like, but Cavaliers not so much. D;

But thanks for the information on the Beagle and your suggestion! =D
  • I recommend NOT getting a Cavlier

As you said you're in a small town i can almost GUARANTEE that a PROPER breeder will not be around you
Cavas are prone, well, more than prone, to an enlarged brain and it makes them think they are itchy, it is horrible to watch and the is pretty much no cure but a lobotomy, which vegitises them.
The only person that we've seen get a puppy without this spent $2000 on the dog and $2500 on travelling to get the dog.

I Recommend Bearded collies though
They do have a proneness to this leg thing which causes their legs to grow in funny, but so do beagles and it effects less than 1 in 12 ( i think )
High energy - if you want, will also settle at home.
Unfortunatly - Prone to mad moments AKA 'Watch me run around like a madman xD'
Can be high grooming, but if you wanted you could clip it, if its not a show dog, who cares?
Naturally friendly - but this one i know went funny with dogs after she got unwillingly mounted during her first heat so is a bit funny with dogs
VERY Laid back dominant wise
NO Problems with kids
GREAT For agility
EXTREAMLY smart Easy to train
Average Size of Male: Height: 21 - 22 inches, Weight: 45 - 55 pounds
Average Size of Female: Height: 20 - 21 inches, Weight: 45 - 55 pounds
(55LBS Is almost unheard of.. 40-45 is more common .. but it takes 3 years to mature)
But..
I only have one breeder near me and i live in quite a big town

  • A bearded collie sounds awesome.
But, rare here. Rare anywhere near here. >.<
They're a fair size. I like that.
They sound almost perfect.
Too bad we don't have any stinkin' breeders. D:<

I also found Goldens were a good match for me.
But apparently a Golden is a 'big dog' according to Dad. Bah. I love Goldens, always have, always will. <3 Too bad Fatha' isn't willing to own one. D;
I bet it'd be easy finding a Golden Retriever around here, too! They're not rare.

  • POODLES<3
I don't care what anyone else says, but I have a few poodles...and what can I say....
They are some of THE. BEST. DOGS.
They are sooo easy to train, my oldest poodle doesn't even do tricks for treats, she just loves to please people, she will even shake a strangers hand. :3
They never shed. Easy to potty train. They are defiantly kid, people, animal friendly.
I am looking into teacup poodles right now, but I have Miniature poodles.
They tend to be one person dog. [but. like I said, friendly.]
They also are veryyy good guard dogs.

The ONLY downside I can think of is that they get cataracts easily, my 11 year old poodle is blind. -not fully- but she has cataracts in both eyes. But, it doesn't seem to bother her much because she still chases the pups around. xD

  • shetland sheepdog in my experience w/friends dogs, they've been very good natured, easy to train, and energetic. downside would be the coat.

it's hard to guess personality on any mix unless you get a young adult/adult.
It's just life. You'll get over it.
  • My uncle has dashunds.
and they are the normal ones.
They are really energetic.
They like to go and tree raccoons and hunt xD
But they would be too small for me to have all the time :P

  • I have a Sheltie/Kelpie cross already =P He's a good boy.
But he's a "big dog" according to my dad. (Psh, he's on the larger side of medium.)

No Doxies for me. xD
Like you said, Tiff, TOO SMALL.
I'd accidentally step on them or hurt them. </3
Plus, I can't go from two big dogs to one tiny one. Lmfao.
I wouldn't know my own strength when walking it. LOL.
  • Hey G, the first breed I thought about when I read what you wanted, was a Jack Russell terrier. I've been around them a lot.. I don't personally like them because they are one of those "hyper" breeds, but they seem to fit you! I would also recommend Wheaton terriers. They are ridiculously friendly and easy-to-please.. although they're not 1-person dogs. They like everybody. They're really soft. They have longish hair though... monthly-bimonthly haircuts would be optional though.

If you are not prepared to handle a Bulldog (it's great that you said so), then I would not recommend buying anything as big (or bigger) as a Lab. Cane Corso are not for everyone. They have their amazing things about them; they are known for being gentle and careful around children--but then they can also be aggressive towards children in the case of poor socialization and breeding. Plus they can cost up to $3000 a piece, and add the $500+ shipping. Vet bills, food, poop, socialization, training... they're all a lot bigger with them too.

So check off Jack Russell. This breed needs training right off the bat. The sooner you can train it, the better.

A medium-to-large type of dog I can recommend is a Greyhound! They are very sweet, and would do well getting lots of exercise. They are playful and sweet as pie. You don't have to worry about the coat, obviously.

Oh, and plus, I would highly encourage buying from a breeder within driving distance who does not advertise in the newspaper. I can understand why some people do but that just means they're looking for easy customers, and when you breed, you should be breeding for specific types of people, not just whoever comes by with some cash. Get what I mean?

Anyway good luck with your pup search. Sorry bout Maggie... hopefully someone will good dog skills, who doesn't have kids, will take her.
