• I'm not going to say that he/she just a dog-but from mi perspective, it's your own fault. :( If you were/are aware of how the dog is, why didn't you put something up around the coop like a fence or something that a dog can't chew through? :?

  • I really cannot think of a legitimate reason to beat or injure anything that is just following its most basic instincts.
If you know the dog is like that, maybe you need to make more severe precautions against things like that happening. You, obviously having the upper hand being human, need to watch out for YOUR animals.
Maybe it needs a muzzle, more training, or better excercise.
    292acg0.jpg
  • Beating the dog won't work, and that is animal abuse. What did you put up that was so easy to chew through? If a dog can chew threw than so can a coyote. Don't hurt the dog it just needs training or maybe a different home.
  • @ everyone: i had a fence around it it jumped it and then got into the pen., i took EVERY percaution, two its not my dog to train, even if i have tried to keep it away, and as for the more excersize it has 11 acers to run on all day long. its jsut a stupid damn mutt who needs to get the hell beat out of it.

*sorry im still REALLY mad*
  • You should really just focus on taking a breathe and work on figuring out how to fix the problem in a rational manner - once you've calmed down specifically. Ranting like this only makes yourself look bad to be completely honest. =/
    Karissa.png
  • Because, you know, beating an animal that has issues already is a GREAT idea.
Chain the damn thing up. Then it won't be able to get to your stuff.
While you're at it, find it a new home where someone -doesn't- want to injure it or kill it.
    292acg0.jpg
  • ohh belive me if i had say over if we could get rid of it it would have been gone the day we got it. but i have no say since its not my dog its my brothers and he sees no problem with it KILLING my chicks. and to be honest i dont think i would have the heart to actually hurt the stupid damn dog, but im not going to argue with you because incase you ddint see this part...

*NOTE*
i dont want to hear how its not the dogs fault and how its just a dog blah blah blah. because its just going to piss me off more. kay?
• You need to sit down, and calm yourself. Breathe in, breathe out. Honestly, it was quite stupid of you to post a thread about beating a dog on a CHILDREN'S SITE about dogs, and then not expect anyone to tell you you're wrong.

You did NOT take every precaution. My chicks were enclosed in a ROOFED pen, covered in chicken wire, with solid wood frames, and a gate with a latch. So yes, it was YOUR FAULT, in part. Stop blaming others for doing what they've been made to do.

  • Geeze, this pissed me off reading this.

It's a dog, you're a human.
Who is in charge?
YOU.
Is the dog in charge for your chickens?
Uh, no.
YOU ARE
You want to beat a dog because he did something he was meant to do and you messed up not protecting them well enough?
That'll get you far in life.

Yes I read that you don't want to hear about that,
but honestly? You need to get ahold of reality.
i know you're supposed to cherish life , but this crap isn't paradise .

  • I'm not trying to attack you. Let me make that clear. If you think I'm going to, I'm not. Just don't read my post if you think I'm going to attack you. ;)

Anyways.
What breed is your brother's dog? Certain breeds (although, all dogs have the instinct to kill) have a big instinct to kill birds and other small animals. i.e. hunting breeds like Labs, Goldens, etc.
An 11 acre yard is plenty big. But dogs don't always exercise themselves. Some do, running around and playing with other dogs, but they still need walks every day. A walk gives them physical exercise and tires them at least a little bit. Hyper or mellow dog, it tires them out somewhat. And a dog that goes for plenty walks is more likely to get into less trouble because he won't take out his pent up energy on destructive things like killing chickens or tearing the house apart. Plus, dogs need discipline and training every day to challenge them and give them mental exercise.
I could never hate a dog for his behavior if I did not walk him or give him mental exercise.
Maybe he's not your dog, but if you're worried about your chickens, you should be taking responsibility in helping train the dog to stay away from the pen. You may be using the wrong way to train him, and that's why he's not learning properly to keep away from the birds.
You could always muzzle him when he's out in the yard. Which is harsh because dogs hate muzzles and he might try to take it off, but it's worth a shot. You can buy them for $10+ any store that sells pet supplies. There are mesh-like ones but the leather and metal are more of a garauntee to work.
But like I said, if you want to are serious about helping keep your chickens safe, you've got to help keep the dog away as well as possible.
  • My dog killed about 18 of my dwarf hamster babies once. She pushed through the baby gate that was up and got into the pup bin and tried to play with them.

It was upsetting, I was angry with her at first, but had to consider the fact that although she had never tried to go through the baby gate before, IF I had closed my bedroom door it never would have happened so it was my fault in the end.

What about reinforcing the chicken coop more and getting an invisible fence and setting it up around the reinforced coop to try to keep the dog out?

  • Like everyone else, I agree its YOUR fault

Quite recently, someone i knows cat had kittens, the daughter
left her bedroom door open when the cat had had them and
the mother let their terrier off the lead thinking she wouldnt
do anything even though shes killed 2 kittens before, long
story short, the dog killed the kittens and the daughter got
the blame, Now, whos fault was it REALLY? BOTH!, The daughter
shouldnt have left the door open and the mother shouldnt have
let the kittens/dog in an unbaby gated room.

Now.

4years ago on the 15th july .. Our cat hat 2 kittens.. tottally
by mistake... when she went into labour, we had no dogs,
by about 3days old we had 2 terriers a weimeraner and a
Golden ret. with a reputation for killing small animals, so,
A gate went up in the room the kittens were born it, the door
was shut at ALL times and the window was open so the mama
could get in and out, at about 10days old mama accually took
over my bed because she had an instinct to protect the kittens
and i slept on the sofa for 6weeks. Now the two kittys are big
healthy 4year old cats.

So you see, its not that hard to make sure the dog doesnt get a small animal, not hard at all.

  • I'm copying garfeild here: I'm not attacking you personally, not trying to. Don't read my post if I went to far.

I can feel both sides. The dog id just trusting it's instinct. It would be like a human with an ice cream sitting right infront of them, and when you eat it you get yelled at. But also, I know the feeling. My great dane almost ate my cat, and chased it away. We haven't seen it since. But, I look past that, and he's my favorite pup in the house. You sound like you're mainly only focusing on the bad side of your pup. Count to 100, calm down, and think of all of the good qualities he has. And every dog has his good things, so don't say that there's nothing good about him. If you yell at him, he'll need to release energy in some way, and that could be chasing down chickens and eating them. Make him feel loved. It is your fault. If you make him feel welcome and loved, then he will want to please you. Dogs are not stupid. They're most of the time smarter than the human. They pick up negitave(sp?) energy and feel unwanted, hated, unwelcome. If you throw a tantrum infront of him, yelling and screaming, and BEATING?!?! Wow. He'll DEFINATELY want to have a way to release that energy, because it builds up inside of him, too. You need to form a closer bond with him. If you beat him, I'm betting you get reported to the animal shelter. It is unneccesary and not humaine. Even to threaten to can get you in serious trouble and makes you look like a bad person, witch I know you're not.

Hope this helps.

  • How exactly are you training this dog?
A dog WILL NOT respond to yelling. Your brother DOES need to train the dog yes, how ever, if you had taken better care to put up the fence, your chicks would still be around. Another thing, the chickens will have more eggs. Your brother will not get another dog like his, as they are all very different. Maybe you should talk to your parents? A good punishment to your BROTHER may make him train his dog better.

  • OK it's not attacking you or anyone else.

Ok i have guinea pigs.
And well my dogs except for one want I know want to eat them.
Cause the one that wants at to get to them the most literly before i took percussion. She would ram her head into the cage.
So know i have a gate up at the steps and my door shut at all times.

So its not the dogs fault for its instincts. Not the dogs fault YOUR fault.
You know you have a dog around those chickens i would've more protection for those chicken's

  • *pokes head in*
Hmm...
I say talk to your parents and have them talk to your brother - if he doesn't get that dog trained, you need to find the dog a new home. And also, beating a dog helps nothing ^^ Sometimes I'm so mad I could beat my dumb mutt but I don't because, as others have said, it IS just a dog and they do have instincts... I like the thing someone used about the ice cream cone o.o that was good... and now I want one
*pokes head out*
  • If I was a dog I would have eaten the chickens too.

Agreed.

I'll just quote pretty much every other person by saying it is YOUR fault. Did you really expect a dog, any dog, to stay away from its natural prey? YOU should have seen it coming and not be surprised enough now that you would -beat a dog-. You would beat the dog to get a point across? Hmm. Ever thought that the dog wouldn't understand -why- it was getting -beaten-? I think you need to get a serious reality check and maybe talk to your brother or parents about getting the dog trained or maybe given the dog to a better home where it's not in danger of animal abuse.

  • Think of this. A wolf pack.... it's engrained in every dog from the moment of birth. The only time dogs of a pack are beaten on, is when they are weak, sick, or very elderly. They aren't just beaten on, they are killed.

Discipline does not involve punishment. Discipline does not involve emotion. If you can't control your emotion around the dog, you shouldn't go near it. The fact it ate your chicks sucks, but there are numerous ways to have stopped that, like going for a simple 30 minute walk (at least). It is mentally stimulating, physically/mentally draining, which will have a huge impact on the prey drive/fight drive of an animal.

Yes, "beating" is animal abuse. Imagine an "Auntie" wolf destroying a 1 year old cub in the middle of nowhere, for no reason, even though he just ate Auntie's leftovers. You would think Auntie's gone crazy. Because she has. Dogs live in the moment. They do not think about, "I think I'm gunna go eat those chickens to piss off their owner today." They react. He smelled the chicks, prey drive kicked in, and he went for them. Simple.

  • My dogs are terrible around my chickens. That is why we limit my dogs area when outside. They wear shock collars and have certain amount of space around the house. And since the Barn is out of reach they cant get to them.

All I am saying is it really isnt the dogs fault, and you have no one to be mad about but yourself.
If you know the dogs history and this has been a problem before, you should of 'dog proofed' the chicken coop. Like but up a board around the bottom half, that is what we used to do.

Now with the limited area going on, are chickens are allowed to free range.
